Title: Forge World Phantom Titan
Post by: Seth on September 13, 2011, 11:57:33 PM
(http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x404/sethpartain/Forge%20World%20Phantom%20Titan/th_DSC01667.jpg?t=1315966100)
The parts mostly cleaned up and layed out. The sprue is from a falcon.

The Feet

2 pins in each toe 2 toes a foot.

Then i used 2 pins to pin the toes together.

Then I used 3 pins to hold the 2 parts to the ankle cover together.

Next i pre-drilled holes in the heel connector to attach to the ankle cover and to the toes.

Then laying the toes in the ankle cover, I glued down the heel connector to the ankle cover and let it dry. Once it was dry I drilled out the hole and pinned it down to the ankle cover (just the left hole)

Then I drilled the heel joint out and the heel and put a pin in it but didn't glue it.

Then i glued the toes in place and left the pin hanging down on the heel. That way I was able to position the toes with the heel just holding it in place and was able to make sure it ended up flat.

When it was dry I added 2 pins to hold the toes in place. 1 through the heel connector and 1 through the toes into the ankle cover.

Then I glued just the round heel joint on with the pin hanging into the table joint. When it was dry I drilled out and glue in a pin through the heel  joint to the connector. Then I was able to add the heel on and left it to dry.

I did manage to get the nuts added to the bottom of one foot.

One of the finished feet. 13 pins a foot. I used finish nails for the pins and a hack saw to cut them.

More to come...

Your giving me flashbacks of pinning the feet of my choas warhound.

Such a PITA!

Post by: Seth on September 14, 2011, 09:27:59 PM
how many parts to the feet for those ones?
Title: Re: Forge World Phantom Titan
Post by: jhobin on September 15, 2011, 10:23:23 AM
Going from memory just the foot had

Center piece(1), back toe (2 or 3), Individual toes (6).

So each foot was about 9 piece's. I did the same and threw a couple pins in each foot for stability. I think the legs including the feet are the hardest part about the model because you have to plan way ahead for stability.

I haven't completely finished the torso yet but its been a breeze compared to the legs.

Just ordered $35.00 worth of magnets so I can magnatize the hands, guns, halo fins, and head.
16 ring magnets and 6 plates with 2 holes each. That way i can add a pin through the magnets.
Also got 1/8" Steel rod. I was looking for brass but couldn't find it anywhere around the right size. steel is just as good, right?

The legs mounted to the base which is 11"x14". the straight leg has 2 pins. One going from the foot in to the bottom of the leg and a second one that runs all the way through the knee connecting the bottom of the leg to the top. The bent leg has 3 pins. One the same as the first connecting the foot to the leg and then 2 in the knee joint 1 connecting the top and the knee and one connecting the bottom and the knee. if you look you can see the pin hole and the end of the pin in the front of the knee and the pin connecting the bottom to the knee is visible just not in the pictures.
The waist is connected currently by one pin that runs through both legs and the waist. i am planning to add 2 more pins to keep the waist from twisting. In the second picture you can see the hole on the side of the leg that connects it. The bolts holding the foot up i am planning on hiding. The phantom will be standing on something. I was thinking a building that is being crushed.

The begining of the green stuff vines on one of the holofins any thoughts?(I am going to add thorns after)

Looking good, for sure. Are the vines going to be green or brown (or something else)? Perhaps with the occasional flower?

I am thinking black like the Biel-tan thorn design because that's the craftworld I play. I am probably not going to add flowers though.

From an Eldar point of View even though its a machine of Death they tend to try and find poetry in battle. I would go with the 2nd one.

I prefer the second picture as well. I think the thorns not only look better, but they also should be a bit more structurally sound.

First one it looks more "Get out of my way!!!" and it just looks totally awasome at that... but the model, it looks good!!

#1 looks the best to me. But if you can pull any of those looks off I say go for it.

so i made small thorns like the second pick and longer ones. The small ones were about 5 every hour after drying time for the green stuff and shaping. Were as the long ones came out to be about 100+ an hour and required no prep work. I did one part of the holofin with the long ones and think it looks ok. i can always undo what i have done but i am hoping others think it looks good.

If you round the left side bump on the heart I think this will look beyond amazing. Better than I could pull off in Plasticard already.

Did you use stencils for the Runes on the side?

i got the transfer sheet from forge world scanned it copied the part i wanted and printed it on to the plasticard then exacto knifed it out.

I think it looks pretty great so far.  Only suggestion (if it's not too hard) is to see if you can have the armor plates separate the symbol as well.  As in if you follow the armor lines have them bisect those parts that run over them.   It would help it look stock.
Title: Re: Forge World Phantom Titan
Post by: Seth on November 30, 2011, 09:49:26 PM
would that look better or i was thinking of adding dimension to the craftworld symbol

I get what you're saying and I like what you're saying. I think it's why I dislike the heart now, because it doesn't look like it belongs, and I think this suggestion is the fix.

I shortened the arms on the y part of the symbol and i am wondering would it be better to add new lines around the heart and make it 3d in a way or to just add the armour lines through the heart
Title: Re: Forge World Phantom Titan
Post by: the_trooper on November 30, 2011, 11:14:20 PM
Armor lines through the heart.  It also seems to fit the weird emo of Eldar.  Like a giant broken heart (that is only broken because you have to assemble titans in pieces).

Hey glad to see that I am not the only one taking on this beast of a model.....!! I am working on a Iyanden Phantom to go with my Revenant.  I am hoping to have it done for the mega battle in august.. Would be a lot of fun to get them side by side on the table.

Here are some photos of my revenant.. Paint scheme is going to be similar on the Phantom.

Hey "Smutz" quick question, about how big is the Revenant? I am kinda thinking about getting one, but I was also thinking about just biting the bullet, and saving up (for like 1 1/2 years) while working on my modeling skills and get the phantom. So like is it near the size of the phantom, or much smaller? Thanks in advance - The King
Title: Re: Forge World Phantom Titan

Its smaller. Its the imperial equivilent to a Warhound Titan compared to a Reaver Titan.

King,

the Revenat is roughly 12" tall standing straight. The Phantom is more than twice as tall. Here is picture of the revenant next one leg of the phantom. I thought the Revenant was huge when i first got it but after starting work on the Phantom it seems tiny.

So I went down to Battlegrounds yesterday and airbrushed my titan. All I have left to do is the legs. I will post pictures of my titan when i get a chance later but for now here is two of the three tanks I also did. Thanks Nick for all the help I hadn"t airbrushed in a long time and I am not sure if it would have looked as good as it does.

I have done some painting to the head. Any thoughts? Would a dark red gem on the head look good?

I would go for a red or blue Gem, a green one may blend in with the armor to well. BTW I LOVE the eldar heavy stuff so sleek and streamlined in a no homo sexy way.

thank you very much. i have been jumping back and forth between updating 100 power armour grey knights to be holding the right weapons and dry brushing the bone on the guns lately. the pulsar is done with the bone and the d cannon is almost done right now. then i will do the gems on them and move on to the halo fins. i only have about 10 or so grey knights left to switch weapons on(strike squads need swords not halbreds) and then they are done and will get painting. having no job right now is a bad and good thing. sometimes i just want out of the house but it has done wonders for my armies.

Fantastic work. Love the airbrushing on the super heavy tanks and the titan is jaw dropping.
