We haven't stated definitively if we're playing on Black Friday or not. Personally, I'm free to play then.
Assuming we do play, what's the next game?
I can run 4th ed. Tomb of Horrors. Tom also seemed interested in running maybe...SOMETHING. If someone wanted to, I would totally do a WH40K rpg, like space marine or rogue trader or dark heresy. I don't really want to run those though.
If no one is decided we can get together on Black Friday to do some board gaming and talk about the future plan.

The problem with WW games in general is that the rules are too vague and open to interpretation, both by the player and the... GM? Well, whatever they call the person running the game in WW the point is the same. What an ability can or cannot do can be hard to agree on. (at least that's what it ended up as in my experience.
Besides, who is AkriRahm? This was the part of the board for the group that was in a campaign in a DnD game world called Torland, where the party died horribly. Also, some other DnD homebrew I think (same result), 4th ed something or other (ditto), 3rd ed Tomb of Horrors (didn't make it past the 1st corridor) and the Demonweb pits, which we not only survived but beat, hooray!
I've read (and have) the 40k book for dark heresy. Looks like it's pretty hard to get into without a decent understanding of the universe.
Still, I'm open to pretty much anything that we can get a majority to agree on assuming they want to keep going, since I certainly want to continue playing. 4 weeks since we played and mine is the first reply other than... Love Scion person (no offense)
How's that for rambling? Might be a personal best.

from what i heard, they are taking the combat from 4th but adding a more RP aspect to it. To be honest i dont mind, just as long as they dont make a 6th edition in unless its 10 years or more from the new 5th
Also, jay wont be here friday, but unless we get shorted another person, we should be good to run with 4. unless you come across the black dragon. even then i think you guys will live, it doesnt hit to hard as its a controller and its by itself. OR i could be making it up just to scare you ;D

For some reason I'm reminded of the Baldur's Gate II flavor description of the red dragon scale armor: "Due to it's nature, care should be taken wearing this armor around dragons... especially red ones". :P

ok, so I was bored and decided to look up some stealth rules, and came upon the following interpretation, which I find believable:
Attacking automatically breaks stealth, regardless of line of sight. Because of the noise made by attacking, any nearby creature knows what square(s) you are in after the attack is resolved even if they cannot see you (or the square). Therefore, there are entitled to make a targeted attack against you, although at a -5 penalty for total concealment. The penalty is the result of attacking an invisible creature.
Also, a new stealth check can only be made after a move has taken place. Even if line of sight is lost, a creature can't enter stealth if it remains in the same position it was before.
Finally, any creature attempting to enter a square occupied by a stealthed creature automatically breaks the stealth. Again, attacks would have the -5 penalty for total concealment (invisible opponent).
Does this sound reasonable? I just want to figure out the ground rules before going forward, because the way we were doing it last time is campaign-breaking in PC hands...

Now exploits and min/maxing aren't my thing (you may have noticed) but anyone else can feel free to take advantage of my road to invincibility. At least until 5e dawns... Maybe I should volunteer to run the first 5e campaign; before additional supplements destroy the balance.

As a shameless plug; for those of you looking for something to do to fill those Friday hours; check out the new Baldurs Gate remake they're releasing next week. It won't be in HD (believe it or not Bioware LOST all the source files somehow) but it might still be worth checking out. Classic AD&D 2e action!

Like I said, the Bioware lost the source art so it would take years to make an HD version because they would have to create all of the art and animations from scratch. Since they didn't have the time/budget to do that they made do with what they had.
Sadly, it was delayed until the end of November so you have more time to make your decision.

Think we'll kill something meaningful this week?
We've been led to believe that the module is nearly over and we're fighting the final few boss battles. Gotta assume if there's one more boss fight it'll be the biggest fight ever. Thus, we need to hole up in that little anteroom and sleep.

I just thought it was funny that we tried to rest because we felt tapped out, triggered the boss fight anyway and had less trouble than the previous fight in that room. Just shows how things don't always work out like you might think.
In the Pathfinder adventure path I'm reading, there's a large dungeon with a big boss fight... a boss that has nothing to do with the storyline; he's just standing on a secret enterance even he doesn't know about. And if the players haven't been paying attention they might not even realize it, and let the real villain (a much less powerful creature) make off with the treasure they didn't know about.

In my experience, players are pretty good at finding esoteric, hidden stuff but they'll miss all of the obvious stuff.

So the inaugural Pathfinder game kicks off tonight. I'm super nervous something will go wrong, but hopefully that will pass by the time the game starts. I'll probably be upstairs most of the time putting some finishing touches on so stop by if there are any questions.
We'll kick off with an introduction of everyone's characters (partly in-game and partly out). I won't have a chance to design treasure for this specific group composition in this adventure since I don't know the details of everyone's characters, but level 1 treasure is pretty much a joke anyway. Horray for copper pieces! Not even worth their weight in gold, or even silver!

No one has ever dared to publicly admit that level 1 is a joke. The only real reward one ever earns at level 1 is reaching level 2.
In my old 2nd ed game I was randomly rolling for treasure and a +4 intelligent longsword forged with the special purpose of slaying dragons dropped as loot. It could detect magic, detect gold, and heal the owner once per day, IIRC. And this for a level 4 party.

I think level 1 is important just for the contrast with your later selves. 'Hey, remember when we had to borrow money from Jay just to afford some rations? Or that time it took us 4 hits to kill that one orc?'

Driving home after the game last night, I had a brilliant idea. Rather than decide by DM fiat whether players who are absent get xp or not, we can use a more flexible system. Those who attended can vote whether to give a share of experience (and/or loot) to the absentee, or keep it for themselves.

To me, this seems like a more fair way of deciding it, and allows for a fresh look at the circumstances each time it happens.
Also, with regards to the... possibility for... an extra regular attendee... let me know if you know someone interested.

There was some talk last session about possibly adding a sixth ranger to Far Company (invitation only please: no unsolicitied requests). Did anybody get around to asking anyone yet?
For the next area I've written out some flavor text for each room so I don't have to ad-lib as much on descriptions. We'll see how that goes.
Does anyone have the current XP total? It seems I forgot to write it down...

That's the good/bad thing about being low-level. You have fewer abilities to worry about, but you have fewer tools at your disposal. Same thing goes for the bad guys.
When I was putting together this dungeon level, I couldn't find any creature that had the kinds of abilities I wanted but had a low enough CR to be managable, so I created my own.
Can't wait for that encounter...

My friend Nathan won't be free until later this month, at least. July might be a more reasonable time frame. He's finishing his thesis and then he'll have some amount of time to become a real boy (instead of a grad student) again.

Down to only 2 players out of 5 until a 3rd arrives late isn't fair to anyone... so unfortunately I'll have to call off the game this week. Do we want to play some board games or something? There won't be many of us there for even that, and I think Steve prefers to play in the magic tournament in those circumstances. Try and respond before 6, as I should be at work and able to check the forum until around then.

A combination of laziness, tiredness and forgetfulness kept me from updating the campaign recap thread so far. If I remember I'll do it tonight.
I bought the campaign sourcebook a few days ago and like the character background stuff it has. I was planning on asking you guys to give me some idea of your character's history anyway, so it works out pretty well. Based on your history the books give you access to traits (which are like minor free feats). If you are in the store or have the book you might want to go through and see if there are things that you like.
Two caveats though:
Anything with a very low percentage on the charts, like being an heir to a throne or raised by dragons etc is a no-go unless I see you roll it. If you want to declare that your parents are alive or dead rather than leave it up to chance, that's up to you.
Second, I think the listed story traits aren't balanced right so those won't be allowed. If you're looking at a background because it gives access to a story trait you might want to look elsewhere.

Ok, summaries for the last two sessions are now (finally) up in the recap thread. I really need to write those up more quickly to keep the details fresh in the mind. (I do take notes, but memory is always the best author).
The next session will wrap up the remaining details of Chapter 1, Part 1 and kick off Part 2. I designed the campaign to have 5 Chapters consisting of 5 Parts each. Most parts will be shorter than this one was. This session will be mostly RP and NPC interactions, training, buying items etc. It will be a good chance to start integrating specific backstories into the campaign also, so any details you can provide me would be helpful. If you don't want other players to know, either send me a forum message or we can talk before the game starts.
Josh, if Nathan is able to start next time there will be two places to eaily introduce him to the group. If you can get me some details of his character (alignment, race and class being primary) I can figure out which one will work best.
Any questions/concerns/complaints/death threats; let me know.

I'm pretty busy so I'm down with cancelling this Friday, but I'll make a supreme effort to get there if we're having a game.

So we're down to 3, eh? As I've said before there won't be much combat in the next session, but it will be an opportunity to interact with NPCs, gear up, and learn about some of the backstory (maybe). In some ways that's the hardest thing to have to miss.

I have even more horrible news...the weekend of October 12th I need to go to Cape Cod for a wedding that I'm in.

I was wondering when someone would catch on... assuming you did actually catch on.
Anyways, I have some bad news but then some good news. The bad news is that due to some unexpected [family stuff] I haven't been able to work on the adventure for the last 5 or so days, so I'm going to have to cancel this week's game. I'm just not comfortable kicking off a new campaign area without more prep time. I'll still be at BG on Friday if you want to talk about the game or ask questions or play something else, just no Pathfinder this time.
The good news is it gives me some time to reiterate what I said at the end of the last game. For those of you who left early or didn't hear: I'm taking your suggestions on the direction the campaign should take. Not for the plot (I had that basically in mind when we started... hehehe) but on what future adventures should include/exclude.
Stuff like:
-Diplomacy
-Investigation
-Dungeon crawling
-Exploration
-Puzzle solving
Since we're moving to a relatively open slate, this is an excellent time to let your voice be heard. Do you want more combat? Less? More RP situations? Non-violent encounter solutions (either bypassing through social skills or avoiding the threat entirely)?

I personaly like more rp situations and stuff being solved without fighting. But fighting is good to.
Outdoor fights, city fights or stuff like large buildings to explore are my favorite over dungeon crawls but i got no problem with a crawl though

I also prefer rp encounters to battle ones. Not to say that battle doesn't have its place. But that's just my play style.

Well, I originally didn't think this would affect me but I seem to have mis-calculated the dates. My family reunion is on the weekend of 8/1 and I committed to going, so I won't be available for the next game date.

As some of you may know, my dad isn't doing very well. He has been between various hospitals for the last 5 weeks straight. That's the reason I had to cancel the game last Friday, and also the game before July 4. Most of the time he's stable, but sometimes there are family medical conferences (which it was the last time) or a sudden emergency (which it was this time).
The long story short, I can't guarantee that I will be available on any given night, and as the GM that isn't fair to everyone else to have me cancel a game on short or no notice. So I have to put my game on hiatus until my dad's situation changes.
I know that Josh was talking about a M&M game, and maybe we can pick up with that on the... 15th? is the game after this one. Otherwise... well I'm sure we can figure something out. As far as the 1st; I'm open to suggestions.

The Monster Manual doesn't come out for at least a month. That would make things problematic to say the least.

There are some stat blocks for common monsters published by Wizards and available on the web. People are unhappy that the roles system from 4e has been abandoned and we seem to be back to monster splat blocks. That's unfortunate. The monster roles and encounter design was one of the best things about 4e.

It's related to the PC 'roles' system. If they axed one and not the other, it would give people bad memories.
Still, balancing encounters properly was (technically is I guess) one of the biggest challenges in my campaign.
