Title: Prepair for war......in SPACE!
Post by: Grand Master Steve on July 09, 2008, 12:02:16 AM
Any one play Battle Fleet Gothic? I know I, Rob sims and Jon does im thinking of making some planet terrain so we can play I got a Space marines fleet waiting to bombard stuff to death. Also Ive always wanted to have an interactive game where what happens in BFG can affect a 40k game. IE fireing on the planet for a lance strike, launching boarding torpedoes to deep strike extra troops etc.

I have Orks around here somewhere. I remember this game being at least 5x more tolerable than any GW game.

I've seen this played usually on Wednesday evenings.  John has a large Chaos and Imperium fleet.  I've seen him play against Sims.  I smell a BFG Opponents List thread ready to be born.

It is played on Wednesdays because that's when Jon can get down here.  I'd love to expand it to other days, I'm usually there very often.

He has a ton of terrain too.  It'd be pretty sweet to get a core of good terrain for the store.  DP used to have nice planets and some cosmic affects plus real nice asteroids.  The planets and asteroids would be real nice and relatively simple.

Can ask John how he did his.  He's a whiz at this kind of stuff.   If the terrain stuff was at the store 24/7 I can picture people playing more often.  A lot of the terrain, to me, is integral to the game.  Who wants to play BFG in the middle of empty space where nothing happens?

Hi Steve,
I play BFG against Rob (Sims) usually on Wednesday nights.  I posted the fleets I currently have on the other thread.  I also have a bit of scenery; planets, moons, asteroids and dust clouds.  I wouldn't mind starting up some regular gaming.  I'll be there tonight.

As an aside, during the setup for this past megabattle I found a box high up on a shelf in back that had what appeared to be BFG terrain in it.  I was almost certain I made out an asteroid, and what looked like a series of other things including more asteroids in the works.

I'll pull it out the next time I get a chance and take a closer look.

You did not hallucinate. I know that I made some big, hemispherical, planet-like thingymajiggy. It was terrain that was being made for Babylon 5, if I remember correctly, but it should certainly be used for BFG as well.

That sounds most excellent.  I envision it getting much usage.  Sims, when you look at the box again post an inventory of what you find (if you don't mind).  Thanks!

I'll be working on some larger planets than the ones I have.  These will be half sphere in shape, so they won't fall over.  You can find these foam spheres at any craft store.

Can't wait to see the new planets.  I'd love for BG to get some more BFG terrain including planets and whatnot.  Its the sizes that matter most compared to how they look.  Just need small, medium, and large planets.

So anybody up for a game soon?  I definitely want to get another game in, and now that I've almost got my other merchant assembled I can play a better 1000 point force.  Let me know what days work for you and I'll have them work for me.

The game today was awesome!  It ended, if I remember correctly, in a draw with roughly 100pts between Sims and Steve.

Halfway through I thought the guys went mad when Steve's Strike Cruisers and Sims' Tau ships were less than 5cm apart.  You really cannot discount those Strike Cruisers.  They are durable and shooty.

The Space Marines escort died like fruit flies and Sims' Tau lasted a lot longer but near the end of the game all his escorts were gone (died a turn or 2 before?) and some of his big guys were dead or crippled.

For a 1k game it was crippling.  I think another turn or two would've been good for you guys.  But, that's how Sundays go.  Here's hoping that 1) I find my BFG stuff soon and remember how to play 2) Steve can play with us more often and 3) Sims' Tau die a horrible death from 32 torpedoes per turn from the mighty Imperium Navy.  To quote Sims "suck it"

Jon you still have those unassembled space stations? I wouldnt mind assembeling them for nice terrain use and maybe even scenario use.
Title: Re: Prepair for war......in SPACE!
Post by: Jonathan on July 14, 2008, 12:14:24 AM
Yes, yes I do.  I believe I have 2 orbital space stations and 1 blackstone fortress.  I may actually have 3 orbital space stations...not sure though.  I need to do an in depth roundup of my BFG stuff, catalog it all, and then see what's what.

There's some nice pieces in there but is a shame that a lot (well the metals) are not assembled.  I hate gluing those escorts...they're such a pain. That's why I field a cruiser heavy fleet.  The plastics are much better.

To quote Sims "suck it"

Actually, it was "suckad*ck".

That was a great game today Steve.  It was great not to get utterly destroyed like I do against John, though I liked that we devastated each other.  I think another turn or two would have definitely helped one side or the other, I can't believe I forgot to use Come to New Heading and just kept trying to make normal turns to get to you.  I hope we can play again, because I really liked how our game went.

Everybody else needs to get their ships together now.  War is here, don't be left behind.

Gotta play a bigger game for the barge.  I'd love to see you play against Sims again but I'd also love to see you play against John.

John won't be at the store tomorrow but if you're able to come next Wednesday (the 23rd) he'll be there.  He'll probably play Chaos versus your marines.  That'd be a fantastic game to watch.

That is a predicament.  I think that means you won't be playing against John anytime soon (but who knows).  So...best 2 out of 3 between Sims and you?  Winner takes the crown!

Think you guys will play a 2k game?  I know the 1k took like 3 hours but maybe you can get a game in when there's fewer distractions and it'll end in less than 3 hours.

I've watched John play this afew times and it looks pretty cool. Are there starter sets? Does Derek seel this stuff, or atleast get his hands on it?  I don't always have the $ to invest alot right now, but I'd be willing to try afew games to see if I like it. Anyone able to explain it t me in game sometime. I've played war at sea w/ john afew games, so I sorta understand some of it.

There is a boxed game of it but I don't think that is purchasable anymore.  You can get the rules for FREE at http://www.specialist-games.com/battlefleetgothic/rulebook.asp.  Download them and read through them.  Those are all the current rules.

Regarding fleets, Derek has some stuff in stock.  Whatever he doesn't have he can get.  Cookie is buying Tyranid ships when he gets paid.

If you want to do it on the cheap go for either Chaos or Imperium.  Most of their bigger ships (cruisers) are plastic.  1 box of Cruisers ($15) gives you enough plastic bits to make 2 cruisers.  You configure them how you want to correspond with the ship type from the core book.  Battleships (there are 2 for Imperium) and escorts are metallic.  They go for $35 (1 box of metal bitz to make 1 battleship).  Grand cruisers are roughly $30 per ship.  Escorts are roughly $12 for a box/blister of 3-4 escorts (depends on type).

Go to http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/listProducts.jsp?catId=cat200200 for the complete catalog.  You can buy the rules and the Armada book (most notable covers Tau and Space Marines) but you're better off getting those free rules.

I think that covers it.  Oh one more thing.  Eldar are the most broken fleet in game.  Necrons are 2nd.  This is based on my experience playing against them.  Tyranids can be up there.  Space Marines rock for their bombardment cannons.  Chaos have strong weapons when they're close to the opponent.  Imperium, like Chaos, has a little of everything but also has good strength weaponry at range.  Dark Eldar are similar to Eldar but not exactly the same.  Tau are pretty sweet and relatively new.  The Space Orks are random, moreso than in 40k, and you can make a fleet from scratch (scratchbuild a bunch of Roks and whatnot).

Sounds like you guys had a great game!  I'm glad there are other players of this game out there.

So, Rob, interested in a game on Wednesday (23JUL08)?  As I said earlier, I have a game of A&A Minis with Rick planned for that night, but if we start early enough, I can play both.  We could plan for 1,000 points?  Who knows, maybe Jonathan will find his stuff and finally join in.

Jonathan, if you do find your stuff, I could assemble the escorts for you if you like.

Talk to you soon.

No luck with me yet.  It may take awhile to find the stuff but I'm determined to lay a hand on it all.

John: My friend Steve D. has a Space Marine fleet and has been wanting to play.  Not sure of his work schedule, he works a lot during the week, but I think he said he has this Monday off.  Maybe you guys can arrange something, dunno.

Any thoughts about possibly doing a BFG warm up for the Apocalypse battle next year? There will be an Apocalypse battle, right? Please? I think it would make an interesting start, maybe even fight over the same city, see if Chaos can get its poop in a group and crush the scurge on the galaxy that calls itself the Imperium of Man.

I wouldn't mind doing that.  My chances of participating this year is much better if BFG is played as I have a rather large collection of ships from the Imperium, Chaos and Ork fleets.  Do you play BFG, and if so, which fleet(s)?

If you check out my previous post: http://www.battlegroundgames.com/forum/index.php?topic=63.msg698#msg698 you'll find a link to the official website with the rules (rulebook is FREE) and a link to the GW Online Store showing all the models for the fleets.

There is also a Wikipedia article that gives a broad overview (search for Battlefleet Gothic).

However, your best bet is to speak in person with someone who knows how to play or even play a demo game yourself.  I'll be at the store this Wednesday but I don't have my stuff with me (still tracking it down).

I don't want to volunteer anyone but maybe John would be willing to show you or tell you about the game?  He'll be at the store this Wednesday as well.

In a nut shell, it is a turn based spaceship combat game set in the 40K universe.  Like 40K, you set a points limit to your fleet build with each race choosing from their respective fleet list.  The field of battle will have asteroid fields, dust/gas clouds, planet(s) and moons for terrain.  There are rules for different scenarios so each game will have its own set of victory conditions.

I'm planning on being at BG this Wednesday (23JUL08) with an ETA of 5-5:30.  If you are around and would like to play a demo or talk about it, let me know.

The brave are the ones who remain steadfast, forcing the enemy to retreat through sheer repetitiveness.  Warped Tour was great, a little wet/tornadoish, but great.  I'm quite interested in playing a game.

So you wish to start a Chaos fleet, eh?

Well, good for you.  You chose one of the cheaper ones.  The rules for Chaos are in the main rulebook, which you can legally download in parts off the specialist games website (www.specialist-games.com), just make sure when it asks for your country you don't choose the US.  Don't question me, just choose the UK.

Also, you'll be able to read about all the rules there.  As for purchasing, you should start with the normal Chaos cruisers, which come in boxes of 2 in plastic (you lucky bastard).  If you ask Derek to order them, he can get them.  I can help you the next time I'm in (which is basically every day) with any other questions you have, as can John and Jonathan (but don't listen to him, he cheats).

I would first just download the rulebook (It comes in parts as .pdf files) or get it on eBay, they tend to go for cheap.  Read through the rules a bit, it is a very different game than Warhammer so don't expect a simple skim through will help in your transition.  However, we are all glad to help you and once you get a few ships we can start playing so you can get used to your fleet.  In the meantime, I know John has multiple fleets that he can teach you with if you come in on Wednesdays (and you can also watch us play), and I can easily break up my fleet to show you the basics.

Good to know you decided to come to the best GW has to offer. :D

They're a fleet of slavers who torture their slaves.  Clearly they want to torture you, the modeler, as you assemble/construct/build their fleet before it tortures others i.e. slaves/opponents.

No pain no gain or some such nonsense.

Rob,
Thanks for playing that 1,300 point game.  I told you to bring your "A Game", what happened?  I know, you lost "for the greater good". ;D  I thought I was going to lose half my fleet when your battleship exploded  :o; way to many lance shots going around.  When my cruiser blew from that explosion, I said to myself this is gonna be a rough one.  All in all a great game!

So, do you think you can muster 1,500 points?  I was thinking we could play using the campaign rules if your interested.  They are great for a storyline and linking the games together.  Let me know.

So i have been on the GW site looking at some cruisers and bombers and of course the PLANET KILLER but i came across this thing called the "Blackstone Fortress"? Im just wondering if anyone knows exactly what it is and what it does, and if it has a page in the rule book?

The Blackstones were found by the Imperium in the Gothic Sector.  These "living spaceships", six in all, were converted into space stations and were the sites for many of the battles that occured during the war.  The forces of Chaos figured out how to activate them and were able to capture three.  They were used to destroy planets and stars.  The Blactstones self-destructed during the last battles of the Gothic War.

You can find the rules for the Blackstone Fortress in the Fleet Lists for the Imperium and the Planet Killer in the Armada rules.

The Eldar Pirate Prince "One-eyed Patrack " is prowling thru space raiding convoys everywhere!  His Void Stalker " Soul Ripper" is rumered tobe escorted by many Cruisers and destroyers; some say Wraith ships have been seen in traveling with the fleet.

Eldar pirates are coming far too close to the Tau Empire.  In the last battle which they tactically withdrew from, they managed to transport a few emissaries from the planet they were fighting near.  It turns out they are very stout men known as Demiurg.  Currently the Tau are making treaties with this new race and working on combining some mining ships and outfitting them for the battles they fight.  It seems as if this new addition will certainly help the Tau in their future battles, warding off the invaders.

The first of the Demiurg vessels have been upgraded to fight with the Tau against the enemies of the greater good.  John, ready to see your defeat?

Rob, I'm interested in a 2,000 point game.  I'll be at BG Wednesday (13MAY09), but have a 1,750 point game of Flames of War to resolve.  If you're there, we can talk about the Gothic game.

I'm gonna go over it with the lint roller one more time to make sure it's all off.  But we can expect to use it. :)
