Warhammer Histortical Trafalgar game
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:33:42 PM »
So at Games Day 2010 I got to play Trafalgar.  It was great, simple, fast to pick up and the miniatures are not that expensive.. Once I get the rule book and a few ships up and running I would love to teach anyone who would like to play.

My friend Nick owns the rulebook, and we were both going to invest in fleets at some point. I'm sure he'll be very exited to find another player.

I am going with Old Glory Miniatures.. and I think I will be doing the 1/300 scale they are bigger then the book but the scale increase is in the book from what I was told. Other then that you are at 1/2000 scale and that seams too small.

Paul, if you and Nick are around tomorrow night (Wednesday), could Nick bring the rulebook; I'm interested and would like to check out the rules.  I'll bring Game Workshop's Man 'O War with me too.

   Thanks, John

I just noticed this topic, I didn't realize there was so much interest in historical games among the BG crew!

I also have Trafalgar and have been wanting to give it a go.  I have a few models from Langton, but haven't assembled them yet...

I have found that Langton models are nice but a bit prices.  I am going to be buying my fleet from Old Glory Miniatures.   www.oldgloryminiatures.com  at the 1/300th scale each ship is roughly 25-35 buck and if you join their club ($50.00 for the year) you get everything at 40% off.  So if you are going to be buying a lot its worth it.

Found another company that makes ships for the Trafalgar range. its Skytrex Miniatures. They make ships in 1/700th scale but they are rather inexpensive and really nice to look at. sails and lines and rigging are all etched brass and the hulls are pewter.  The only trick is that anyone who is going to play needs to agree on a miniature company and all get the same scale.  I am leaning towards  Old Glory and 1/300th or Skytrex Miniatures at 1/700th.  but I know the game was orignally made I think for 1/1200th.

Ok so after A LOT of searching the internet and forum posts it seems that Langton Models. has the best line for the best price with what you get... Most ships are 3-4 GBP and then the sails are 3-4 GBP along with Resin bases at 1-2 GBP. They also have a starter set of 4 ships for around 39 GBP. So that's like 70 US for 900 points worth of ships.

I think i will be making a British or French and definitely a US Fleet.

here is a post I placed on my club site....

So the first thing you need to due is figure out if you are going to stick to the recommended scale of 1/1200th or go larger or smaller.

The only issue with going larger or smaller scale is that you will need to have either enough ships for two people to play with or find others willing to go that scale.

Here is a list of the most well known makers of Naepolianic Ships for the Trafalgar system and the scales they produce.

Langton Models:  1/1200 & 1/300th Napoleonic Ships
Old Glory Miniatures: 1/2400 & 1/300th Napoleonic Ships
Skytrex Models: 1/1200 & 1/700th Napoleonic Ships
GHQ Models: 1/1200th Napoleonic Ships

I think 1/1200 is the way to go.  Larger scales are a.) loads more expensive, generally and b.) need a much bigger playing area.

I have several Langton 1/1200 British ships, (3 third rate 74's and 2 28 gun frigates as I recall) and will work on getting them assembled...

Well found a great deal online for some Langton ships on Ebay.  Now I have a starter fleet for at least half retail.

Here is what I got...

1:  British 3rd Rate (Large) 225pts with out any upgrades
1:  British 3rd Rate (Small) 200pts with out any upgrades
1:  British 4th Rate 150pts with out any upgrades
1:  British 5th Rate 125pts with out any upgrades
1:  British 6th Rate 110pts with out any upgrades

So base ship totals points are 810 with out any upgrades

Now I need to create or buy bases and paint them up.

So after looking and reading about how to even go about making a ship like this... Here she is...

She is a 64 gun 3rd Rate (small) Ship of the Line.

The HMS "Valliant"

Now here is a size comparison...

First my thumb....

Second my Imperial Guardsman...

I still need to add pennants and flags...

Comments more then welcome.
