White Dwarf 389 Flyers Talk
« on: May 27, 2012, 12:12:48 AM »
I just got my Copy of White Dwarf in hand. And Immediately when and Read over the New Flyers on page 66.

The Space Marine Storm Talon Gunship kinda underwhelmed me. I have to say it i  was so Excited about the possibilities of the Escort Craft ability that it would give my Drop Pods additional support to find out it doesn't work with deep strike is a big disappointment. It is still a Nice Ability but I don't see it being used as much unless your going to be doing some outflanking.

Armor 11 all around means I don't want it on the table if my opponent goes first unless they have a higher priority target which I doubt they will with Vanilla Marines. A Krak will glance on a 3 a Lascannon on a 2 a Railgun on a 1 and Multilasers will glance on a 5.

The Saving Grace is Aerial Assault and Fast. It can move 18" and still fire all Weapons granted it only has 2 but that gives you a lot of mobility around the field. If you can get yourself in a position to take out the stuff that can take out the Gunship before it can shoot you down is how your going to succeed with it.

Hover Strike is Great for when you need something down. BS 5 against everything but Skimmers and Flyers is great especially when you want it disabled or dead and the pinning helps against those mass hordes of enemies.

The weapons are Few. Your always going to have the Twin-Linked Assault Cannon  but your Choice of a Twin-Linked Heavybolter, a Twin-Linked Las, Typhoon Missile Launcher, or the Skyhammer Missile Launcher. I think the best Choice is the Typhoon or Skyhammer. Typhoon gives you 2 Frag or Krak shots. Skyhammer gives you a 60" STR 7 AP 4 Heavy 3 which allows you a decent amount of shots to take out Transports and Most Rear Armor on Tanks. The Lascannon is 5 points cheaper but its One high powered shot I rather take my chances on multiples.

I love the Ork Jets. They all have the same basic Abilities with a Special Ability for each of them which makes it unique and fun. I am not an ork Player but during a Waagh all of them get Doubles Assault Weapon shots giving Dakkajet 12 STR 7 AP 4 Shots during a Waagh at a Possible BS 3. The Bombers each have a Specialty Bomb that is Zany and Fun. I know it will happen in the Middle of a Tournament a BlitzaBomber Big Boom is going to roll Snake eyes and Do more Damage than if he had rolled 10-12.

What do you guys think?

I ride in on my Bike with my Hat of awesome and say Nay this place should be on fire.

As an Ork player, I was hoping for more out the flyers.  Orks are weak when it comes to anti-armour, I was hoping this would fill that hole, but it doesn't.

I like the DakkaJet.  Looks cool.  The ability to have 3 TL moderately long range guns firing at BS 3 is awesome.  This will be a really good light tank/transport hunter.  The Waaagh Plane ability makes this even better.  I seriously will start playing with a Warphead just for this.  A little too expensive for an AV10 vehicle, but I am assuming 6th ed is going to make this flyer a little more survivable.

The BurnaBomma is the least useless of the Bommers.  Great, AP4 bombs and 1 gun.  Come on GW, for that many points for one shot bombs, can you give me an AP3, so it is useful against space marines.  It is like you want to fill my codex with stuff that nobody wants to take.

The Blitzbomma is the worst.  I love the idea of a dive bomber like the Stuka (WW2) but this thing is terrible.  Another roll table for Orks that does nothing but punish them (like stormboyz, looted wagon, etc).  On a roll of 2-5 on 2d6, my expensive bomma becomes a one use bomb.  Yes I know that only on a 2 does the thing crash, but come on, hitting an AV10 vehicle with a S9 hit is basically going to wreck it.  on a 6-9 (I think), it drops the bomb, but it can scatter 1d6 inches, so it can still miss.  And to top it all off, yes it does get 2d6 for armor pen, but still is only str 7, so you need to roll a 7 to glance AV14.  Still no where near as good or cheap as a melta style weapon.   At least with a Shock Attack gun, the variability runs from suck (everything around the shooting unit dies) to awesome (everything around what you are shooting at dies).  This just runs from suck to sorta ok.  So the blitzabomma can attack, but it is basically a melee attack, that you have to successfully roll on a table to not insta-die, and then roll to scatter to make sure you hit, then have to roll better than average to get 1 pen hit all with a vehicle with a high price tag.  GW could have made it cheap to make up for some of this, or could have made the bomb really powerful to justify all this, or could have made the random table have more positive for the ork player, but they decided to stack ton of really negative stuff on this one unit to make sure it is never or very rarely used (You, blitzabomma, get over there with the flashy gitz and tank bustas).

What I don't get is why the Ork flyers are basically more expensive and worse than the space marine flyer.  I am used to being worse, but cost and numbers usually make up for it.  I still love the models and I will get 2-3, but I think the DakkaJet is the only one of them worth playing.

The Space Marine Flyer isn't all it was cracked up to be. What I  remember reading about it when looking into it a Lot of people were going to use it to support Dreadnought Drop Pods first Turn. This may seem a little overpowered but a Majority of the Time I drop a Dreadnought It Dies first Chance the Enemy can get if I use it offensively at all.

And like you said AV 10 and AV 11 are Very Fragile and unless 6th ed makes Flyers a little more resilient to ground forces I don't see them being all that spectacular unless you focus around them.

For me I would take them if I took Khan gives everything the ability to Outflank I would then have it Escort my Deathsquad onto the Field and watch fury unfold.

The Storm Talon is just a slightly faster Land Speeder Tempest, with some weapons modifications and special rules.  The 11 Armor would 't be so bad if moving 18 inches conferred some sort of save. It would make sense for fast movers and also better balance forgoing this movement save in Hover Strike mode, for the bonus to hit.

Something on my mind regauding these new skimmers is do they get the "flyer" rule in games of Appocolypse? I know Valks for guard do.

I think they would because Talon in its Hover Strike Special Rule becomes a Skimmer. This makes me think that something is going to make it a Flyer specifically in 6th ED as well.

What will be interesting is the rumors that I have been reading about say there is going to be some dogfight rules released as a supplement before 6th or as part of 6th.

Still wish the Dakkajets were cheaper and they came as squadrons.  Then everyone would feel the power of the mighty LuftWaaaagh!

If you mean by the escort craft special rule only 1 storm talon may escort a unit. Though I could see Thunderhawk Stormtalon Squadron data sheet.
