Would you rather go to PAX East 2014 or to your Prom?

T-Minus 29 DAYS, 09 HRS, 36 MINS, 41 SECS

We are now less than a month away from PAX East 2014. Even better, they released the schedule of panels and tournaments moments ago. There is a slight catch, though. I’m actually not sure if it’s complete. One reason is that they don’t have the “Magic: The Gathering” tournaments listed on there. Also, from the persons themselves, there are panels I was told were going to be there that are not. Finally, usually the official PAX twitter handle tweets out big announcements like this. We’ll have to see in the next few days, I guess. However, for now we can get excited about what IS on the schedule.

Friday, April 11th

If you’re a miniatures player then you’ll be interested in this. As soon as the doors open there will be “Warhammer” and “Warmachine” tournaments in the Tabletop area. Keep in mind though, a lot of these tournaments are set up for new and casual players. However, there is a 500-point, 10-player tournament. There is no word if there are prizes for this. The other tournaments they have listed do have prizes you can earn throughout the entire weekend.

Something that may give a shot (if my schedule allows me) is the “Star Wars: X-Wing” miniatures tournament. These are 100-point tournaments and are hosted by Fantasy Flight Games. The cool part is that they will be awarding promotional prizes  to the participants. Which means I don’t think I have to worry about being bad at the game!

Later that afternoon, Battleground Games & Hobbies owner, Derek Lloyd, will be participating on a panel titled “What is Happening to Tabletop Roleplaying Games?” Here is the official description from the PAX East website:

“The past 20 years have been a roller-coaster ride for RPGs. The release of ‘Magic: The Gathering’ in 1993 changed the fundamental nature of the hobby gaming industry and forever altered the business of making and selling RPGs.  Explore the recent history of the category through the lens of Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, and hear predictions for the future of the hobby.”

So, if you’ve got the time, go support him. Don’t forget to bring some underwear to throw at him while he’s on stage. Maybe we can make some signs as well. If you have any ideas, then leave a comment below.

Another event I may give a shot are the “My Little Pony CCG” tournaments. If you’re a Brony or Pegasister at heart, or are obsessed with card games in general like I am, then you may want to give these tournaments a shot. This tournament will be a sealed tournament. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to this one, they have other tournaments listed throughout the weekend.

Saturday, April  12th

Get ready for another fun filled day. Hopefully your feet won’t be hurting you as much as mine will be.

To kick things off, there will be an “Android: Netrunner” tournament. You’re required to bring your own decks for this one. It will be run by Fantasy Flight Games and they will have promotional prizes to give out to the participants. I haven’t played this in a more-than-casual setting, so, I am looking forward to this one. I hope I can make it.

The biggest thing I hope to be in is the “Magic: The Gathering” panel. That will be held at 1:30 PM in the Albatross Theatre. I plan on live-blogging from inside. So, if you can’t make it for some reason, I suggest to subscribing to my Examiner feed so you can keep up-to-date with all the news coming out of there. Here is the official description of the panel from the PAX website:

“Gods, heroes and monsters! What challenges will Planeswalker Elspeth Tirel face next? Learn more about this Hero’s Path as we Journey Into Nyx in the third set of the Theros block. Do you have what it takes to complete the Hero’s Path? Come by the Magic: The Gathering panel to get a glimpse of the Journey Into Nyx, get the inside track on the Prerelease and talk to some of the key R&D and Program leaders from Wizards of the Coast.”

The panel will be hosted by Mark Purvis who is the Brand Director for Wizards of the Coast. I wonder if other people will join him though. There were quite a few people last year on the panel.

Sunday, April 13th

This is usually just a day for me to enjoy the rest of the convention. I remember last year it was a little annoying because I had to drag all my bags to the convention center because I had to check out of my hotel.

Now I know I only live about 30 minutes outside of the city, but getting a hotel during the convention is really worth it, I think. It’s convenient because I feel I can come and go whenever I want to. If I wasn’t staying close in the city, I’d feel stuck. I want to be able to enjoy myself and not have that thought worrying over my head. It also allows me to be able to meet more people and hang out with them over the course of the weekend. Also, I’m staying on the edge of Chinatown in the Theatre district this year. With that said, I definitely plan on getting dinner at one of my favorite spots “The Gourmet Dumpling House.” This place is always packed, but well worth the wait. Let me know if you’d like to join.

Time permitting, there is something that you all may want to check out. The creators of “Penny Arcade,” Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins (along with Scott Kurtz and a special guest), get together and play a live game of “Dungeons & Dragons.” If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend checking it out on YouTube. There are clips of their entire playthroughs from PAX Prime. They are extremely entertaining.

RULES FOR WARHAMMER 40K TOURNAMENT

Rule Books:
The Warhammer 40,000 SIXTH Edition Rules will be used.

The following is a list of legal army choices:
Codex: Blood Angels
Codex: Chaos Daemons
Codex: Chaos Space Marines
Codex: Grey Knights
Codex: Dark Angels
Codex: Dark Eldar
Codex: Eldar
Codex: Imperial Guard
Codex: Necrons
Codex: Orks
Codex: Space Marines
Codex: Space Wolves
Codex: Tau Empire
Codex: Tyranids (old)
Codex: Adepta Sororitas
All supplements and dataslates, digital and otherwise, released on or before Decemeber 15th, 2013 will be allowed in this event.  If you choose to use something from a digital supplement or dataslate you MUST provide the relevant pages to us upon submission of your army list.

MODELS AND POINTS:

1. Each player must bring an army consisting of 500 points (but no fewer than 475), in accordance with these rules…

2. Each list must include 2 Troops choices at a minimum. A player may choose to bring an HQ choice, but **a player is not required to bring an HQ choice**. In every other way, follow the Force Organization Chart. This includes any Allied Detachments being required to take an HQ choice.

4. All models must follow “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG). All weapons, war gear, and so forth must be represented on the model.  All models must be fully assembled.

5. Pictures of conversions or “counts as” models must be emailed to Chase unless they have previously been approved.

6. Warlord Traits – (If you have an HQ) At the start of each game, before deployment, select two tables.  Roll a die for each table.  Choose ONE of the two results as your Warlord Trait for that game.

7.  Psychic Powers – At the start of each game, prior to deployment, players may choose to select the psychic powers listed in their Codex as normal OR swap them for a number of rolls on the psychic disciplines tables per the Warhammer 40,000 rule book. Unless stated otherwise, you MAY NOT mix and match Codex and rule book powers.

8. Forge World Imperial Armor units (and army lists) that are “40k Approved” may be used in this event.  Players are expected to have the appropriate model or an approved substitute as well as the physical rulebook for any FW models they’re planning to use.

9. We will require that each participant submits an itemized army list to a Battleground Tournament Organizer on or before Monday, 12/30/2013 (roughly a week before the event).  An Army Builder .pdf is preferred but a detailed, itemized text file (.txt) is acceptable.  PLEASE include the number of points each upgrade and unit costs on your list.

Please email lists to Chase@battlegroundgames.com as soon as they are finalized.
10. If illegal units or other rules violations are found in a player’s army list, at a minimum, the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. In addition, tournament points may be deducted and/or award eligibility may be forfeited. If in doubt, please ask for clarification in advance from a Battleground Tournament Organizer.

11.  Restrictions:

• This event will not use “Archotech Artefacts” (p 106).
• This event will not use “Unique Terrain” (p. 107).
• This event will not allow The Fortress of Redemption.
• An HQ is not required for this event.

HOW THE TOURNAMENT WORKS:

• Competitors will participate in five (5) games over the course of the event. In each game, you will play a scenario and record the outcome of the battle on your mission sheet. Each game is of random length per the Warhammer rulebook (5-7 turns). Each round will last 50 minutes.

Each game is designed to produce a win/loss result. If one player’s entire army is wiped out, the game ends immediately and his opponent automatically wins. Likewise, if at the end of any game turn, one player has no models on the battlefield, his opponent automatically wins.

Victory Points will serve as the tie-breaker, in respect to draw results and determining overall ranking.

Victory Points in this tournament will differ from the Sixth Edition rulebook. In this tournament, Victory Points are defined as they were in 5th Edition, as follows:

Units Destroyed
At the end of the game, every unit that has been destroyed is worth an amount of Victory Points equal to its points cost (including the cost of all its extra wargear, vehicle upgrades, etc). Units that end the game falling back or off the battlefield count as destroyed.

Units at Half Strength
At the end of the game, every enemy surviving unit that has lost half of its initial models or more is worth an amount of Victory Points equal to half its points cost (including the cost of all its extra wargear, vehicle upgrades, etc), rounded down. In the case of units that start the game as a single model (independent characters, monstrous creatures, etc), they are worth half their points in composition points if they have lost half or more of the Wounds on their profile. In the case of vehicles, they are worth half their points cost in Victory Points if they are suffering from the effects of any Damaged result at the end of the game; or if they have lost half or more of the Hull Points on their profile.

Rounds 1 and 2 will determine for which bracket a player is eligible.

After Round 2, the overall field will be divided into 4 brackets based on performance.
Bracket 1 – eight 2-0 players
Bracket 2 – eight 1-1 players (top half)
Bracket 3 – eight 1-1 players (bottom half)
Bracket 4 – eight 0-2 players
Once brackets are determined, points will be reset to zero and players will compete only against other players from within their bracket.

• In the first round, opponents will be determined randomly. We will try our best not to pair players that come to the event together in the first round. For the second round, players will be matched up according to current rankings in the tournament (based record and then the number of victory points scored). The player in first place will play the player in second place and so on. From the third round on, matches are determined by the bracket system. If for some reason there are less than 32 players, the 4th bracket will always be the smallest.

• The event is designed for every player to play every round. If a player receives a BYE, they will be awarded a win with average victory points for the round.

• You will not play the same person twice during the first two rounds. Though unlikely, you may face one or both of these opponents again if you are placed in the same bracket!

• We will do our best to prevent a player from playing on the same table twice.

• The pairings for each round will be announced as soon as they are determined. Please be sure to arrive at your table ready to play right away.

• Slow playing will NOT be tolerated.  Players are expected to complete at least 4 rounds in each game.  If you suspect your opponent is slow playing PLEASE notify a Battleground staff member as soon as possible as we can not do anything about alleged slow play after the fact.

• Each game will be played on a 4′ x 4′ board.

• Players will receive Results Sheets at the beginning of each round. Each results sheet must be filled in properly to ensure that match-ups and point totals are correct. Once Results Sheets are completed they are to be turned in at the counter so the scores can be entered into the computer.

BATTLES:

The SIXTH Edition Rulebook and FAQ will be in use for all games and will be the definitive guide for all rules. The time limit for each game is 50 minutes. At the end of this time limit, the round will be called; players will need to finish the round as quickly as possible.

-At least TWO copies of your army list and all relevant rules from supplements / dataslates
-Rulebooks are required as are any additional additional rules you need

RULES FOR WALKER IN A WINTER WONDERLAND:

Rule Books:

This is an abstract event and follows SOME rules from the 40k rulebook, but is mainly based around having fun.

The Warhammer 40,000 Sixth Edition Rules will be used.

MODELS:

Each player must bring a Walker.  Any Walker is fine.  Superheavy Walkers are discouraged based on size.

HOW WALKERS IN A WINTER WONDERLAND WORKS:

Objective:  Kill Walkers.  Collect Candy Canes.

At the end of the event the player with the most Candy Canes wins.

The event will be run as a “free for all” with each player fighting for himself on the same table.

Players will have 60 seconds to resolve their turn.  Don’t think, just kill.

• Each player deploys their Walker anywhere in one of 6 locations on the table, determined by a die roll.

• Players will roll randomly to determine deployment order.  Highest roll will place last and go first.

• All Walkers (regardless of type) start the game with 5 hull points.

• When a Walker reaches 0 hull points it is destroyed.  When a Walker is destroyed it drops a Candy Cane.

• Movement: Walkers always move 6” in the movement phase.

• Shooting: During the shooting phase each Walker may fire 2 shots.  Roll 2 D6.  The shots hit an enemy vehicle on a die rule of a 4, 5, or 6.  For every shot that hits a vehicle, roll a D6.  On a die roll of 5 or 6, that vehicle loses a hull point.

• All Walker guns have a range of 36 inches.

• Assault: If a model ends its assault move in contact with another model roll a D6.  On a roll of 5 or 6 the model has successfully assaulted the enemy Walker and it loses 1 hull point.

• To recover a Candy Cane your Walker must be base to base with it at the end of your turn (yes, you may assault Candy Canes).  If you reduce the enemy Walker to 0 hull points on an assault you may immediately recover the Candy Cane.

• When your Walker is destroyed it is removed from the table and then can redeploy at the start of the next player turn.  It will respawn anywhere in one of the 6 deployment zones, as determined by a die roll.  Also, you lose 1 Candy Cane you may have recovered, minimum 0.
