I've often wondered why smashing barrels and pots owned by village commoners was such a necessary part of accomplishing important quests.

Well if villagers would stop leaving valuable quest items in pots when they know a hero is looking for them this wouldnt be a problem.

Don't forget, there is also a great deal of satisfaction in destroying said pots and crates.

The village commoners should just count their blessings and be grateful that THEY aren't being smashed.

^ Agreed. Especily the stupid ones who know your the damn hero but make you run errands for them in order to get a quest item.
