Title: Poll: favorite hq/best hq choice
Post by: skavengear on September 13, 2010, 09:27:25 AM
anybody have any opinion on the best hq choice for a tournament (especially for blood angels)?

my vote goes to either astorath or mephiston. why? mephiston is just bloody murder and not to mention even if he is a priority target then he still is soaking up a lot of damage allowing other threats to go unanswered for a turn or two at least (t6 with a 2+ and fnp is tough)

astorath is just a solid tournament choice to me beacause it reduces dependency upon priests, rerolls to hit, and his axe is where he really can shine (s6 power weapon, succesful invuls have to be rerolled) this can lay the hurt down on so many marine players (which is 50-75% of a tourney)

so any opinion on these two or another good choice? (maybe seth)

also, feel free to post about your army, maybe we can start a gallery of favorite hqs to lead our armies :D

Hands down the Tau  Ethereal!  :o That's right!

Blood Angel's basic commander with chainsword and pistol and spend the rest of the points on something useful!

Jeff I must say you are mistaken on the Ethereal.  By far the best HQ is:

IG Lord Commisar with Powerfist.

As for Blood Angeles I agree with Jeff Basic commander powerfist and maybe a combi melta and use rest of th epoints and useful stuff.

looking at ard boyz lists (the tourney where the best comes out) those were the two most common hq choices i saw (2/38 BA lists did not use one of the two across the USA) but the dabate i have is is mephiston too weak to bother? i mean hes t6... but no invul means melta or plasma spam kills him outright, but thats also a turn wasted on trying to kill mephiston and not my other stuff. like in troy and i's last game, i put so much effort on targeting his thunderwolves, i forgot about the other 4/5 of his army  :P

my vote on completely best overall hq/favorite hq for point cost:
1. emperor's champion with the 10pt oath. 100 points gives the whole army a 6+ invulnerable save, the champ has a s6 power weapon and a 2+ armor 4+ invul for the cost of a naked libby or captain

2. lash prince with wings. hes nasty and so many builds out there that make him OP.

3. tie between Njarl stormcaller and the lysander/tigurus combo (courtesy Ben Hong)
Title: Re: Poll: favorite hq/best hq choice

Mehpiston is T6 the only thing that can instant kill kim is a forceweapon, JOTWW, or simliar power's.

1.) Not bad but there are better oaths!
2.) Lash with wings better hope he can dodge well, one mechig list will make him a puddle on the ground in short time.
3.) Those are pretty tough guys

Don't look at Ard Boyz as the standard for tough character's its all about the HQ's 'synergy' with the list. A Dark angel commander with a sword and pistol sitting in the back in rhino providing LD10 to all marines is more powerful than a 6+ invul, to a whole army.

Generally stay away from special character's usually they are way to over priced for what they do. Look at Azreal price of a landraider gives what ever squad he links up with a 4+ invul save. Great yea, but when you take 20 wounds from HeavyBolters or simliar it don't mean squat.

Rogue Psycher.   Especially when it suffers from perils and ascends in daemonhood.

F&*% YEAH!

Or

Exalted Champion with a powersword and bolt pistol.  Weapons of gods wielded by men.

agreed lords are great. my thing with the champ was for the 100 points. 100 is a very cheap cost for a marine that good. there are better oaths but they cost more.

as far as mephiston, hes proved so  far to do exactly what i wanted: soak up the pounding turns one and two (the turns that are crucial for me to get to your line and start swinging away

Go with Mephiston, he's way too good.

Now, my favorite would happen to be my Death Korps officer, equipped with..... a power weapon. Thats it.

it is impossible for an officer to kill mephiston though (so long as they are still s3) unless you can roll a 7 on a d6  :P

Post by: skavengear on September 14, 2010, 09:23:12 PM
over what ian? ive read it before if you mean the gene seed juice thing... the s3 i am correct, mephiston is t6 which on the wound chart means he cant be hurt by any s3 attacks..

see:
   t 1  2  3  4  5  6
s
1   4  5  6  -  -  -
2   3  4  5  6  -  -
3   2  3  4  5  6 -
4   2  2  3  4  5  6

so even s4 its pretty tough to kill him. he defies death, slaughters orks and rips land raiders in half with his bare hands  ;D

Just show interest and someone will show the models.  They are "Blood knight" or some other deviation of the term.  They are not GW IP which means just keep your eyes open if you are looking for them.   I have a "Fallen Son" and Lee has a "Plague Father" or some such.

oh, so its not an old gw model? is it a reaper model named "blood knight"? i might have to order one myself next time im in store. is it an option to field him in the megabattle if i found a reasonable profile (librarium online had a great sounding one)

I will stab him to death with bayonets any day of the week.

Also, the Sanguinor isn't that good for 2 big reason. First, he is not an independent character and thus can't join units. He can get picked out really easily. Secondly, he only has 3 wounds at T4, just like a normal Space Marine commander. He's a glass hammer. Mephiston is foolproof, but he's not quite unkillable.

mephiston is just too rockin' to refuse huh? i wonder what the dark eldar and grey knights will bring to the power creep. i still find it hilarious everytime i see the gw character focus article on dark eldar and they brag about the best 1 wound model  :D

Last Choas codex was good, the current one is kinda bland.

The best summary I've heard about the current choas codex was

"Wow, look they took the choas out of choas"

Real space marines are'nt traitors, only cowards in power armor. bumps aside though, here is what i have found about marines:
blood angels - fast and strong
black templars - vanillas with oaths
chaos marines - vanillas with chaos god flavor
dark angels - i see scoring terminators that arent split into two types of squads
space wolves - you charge they charge, they ride wolves that own face
ultramarines - basically, the most versatile army this side of the bolter

Cato Sicarius was what sold me on Ultramarines.  From a practical standpoint, he isn't an overly powerful named IC, but one that's balanced in his own way that matches both the fluff and general game play.  The bonuses he gives to a list are average at best, and his wargear and Special Rules aren't that different from the other named IC's in the SM codex, save for Calgar and Lysander who both have Eternal Warrior.

I just enjoyed the exploits that were accounted for by him in the codex a lot, and the opening picture of him and his battle company on pages 18 and 19 were just so enthralling and captivating to me.

Captain Cato Sicarius: Hands down my favorite.

Hmm, I have to say my Trusty Emperors Champion.
At 90 base, he can beat the snot outta a fair enemy and provide an army boost, from a 6+ invulnerable save to preferred enemy for the whole Army...

He is pure character for the crusaders of the Black Templars..

Ok so we got some cool stuff, but... What is the WORST hq choice? this is already going to be a good one i can tell...  ;D

my vote - death company tycho, after everything they give you in the ba codex, they give tycho almost as some sick joke to stain the codex's cheese with utter crap. no IC, useless special rules and wargear, why bother when everything else is a better choice?

tycho far out sucks just about anything. the other two non-IC blood angels (and even compared to all non-IC) are vast lightyears over and above his potential. death company is just a n00b trap gw put in there so new players wouldnt abuse the codex
