RULES FOR WARHAMMER 40K TOURNAMENT
Rule Books:
The Warhammer 40,000 Fifth Edition Rules will be used.
The following is a list of legal army choices:
Codex: Black Templars
Codex: Blood Angels
Codex: Chaos Daemons
Codex: Chaos Space Marines
Codex: Daemonhunters
Codex: Dark Angels
Codex: Dark Eldar
Codex: Eldar
Codex: Imperial Guard
Codex: Necrons
Codex: Orks
Codex: Space Marines
Codex: Space Wolves
Codex: Tau
Kroot Mercenaries
Codex: Tyranids
Codex: Witchhunters
MODELS AND POINTS:
1. Each player must bring an army consisting of 1250 points or fewer, in accordance
with these rules. Each team will consist of two players fighting together.
The Force Organization Chart will be split up into two parts as follows:
(Each player must take)
1 HQ
0-1 Elites
2-3 Troops
0-1 Fast Attack
0-1 Heavy Support
In addition, the two players on a team share three ‘floating’ selections, one each in Elites,
Fast Attack, and Heavy Support. Either player may use up to two of these floating slots,
but may not use the same slot as their partner. For example, Player A takes a second
Elites choice and a second Heavy Support choice. This means their partner, Player B,
may take a second Fast Attack choice as the third floating slot.
An exception to this is the mandatory choices for some armies. For example: "You must take this HQ at this many points." Those choices are allowed outside of these restrictions. Ex. Space Wolves.
2. All models must follow “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG). All
weapons, war gear, and so forth must be represented on the model.
3. Forge World Imperial Armor units (and army lists) may NOT be used. Forge world models may be used where appropriate, however.
4. Teams are not integrated. You may not share tech (for example, using each others teleport homers, etc).
5. If a unit/wargear/ability says something to the effect of "choose a friendly unit/model" you may not select a teammates unit.
6. Necrons will never phase out.
7. We will require that each player submits his army list to a Battleground Tournament Organizer on or before January 7th, 2011 (the day before the event). We ask that players email their lists to ChaseLaq@gmail.com as soon as they are finalized. We are going to do our best to check every list before the event begins AND will conduct random list checks at the start of each round.
8. If illegal units or other rules violations are found in a player’s army list, at a minimum,
the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. In addition,
tournament points may be deducted and/or award eligibility may be forfeited. If in doubt,
please ask for clarification in advance from a Battleground Tournament Organizer.
The scenarios we will be using for the event will be a slightly modified version of the 2010 Adepticon Team Tournament Missions. I will be choosing 3 of the 4 scenarios.
The scenarios can be found here. (http://www.adepticon.org/wpfiles/2010/201040KTT.pdf)
HOW THE TOURNAMENT WORKS:
• Competitors will participate in three (3) games over the course of the day. In each game, you
will play a scenario and record the outcome of the battle on your results sheet. Each round you
will play a different opponent. Each round will last 2.5 hours.
• In the first round, players will be matched up randomly. After the first round, players will be
matched up according to current rankings in the tournament (Battle Points + Other Conditional Point Modifiers - presented in each scenario) e.g., the player in first place will play the player in second place and so on. We will try our best not to pair teams that come to the event together in the first round. If a team receives a BYE they will be awarded the average of the winning teams points for the round.
• You will not play the same team twice.
• We will do our best to prevent a team from playing on the same table twice.
• The pairings for each round will be announced as soon as they are determined. Please be sure to
arrive at your table ready to play right away. We ask that each player be conscious of the
time and that you play at a regular and steady pace to complete the game. Anyone found slow
playing or deliberately stalling for any reason will be penalized.
• Each game will be played on a 4' x 6' board.
• Players will receive Results Sheets at the beginning of each round. Each results sheet must be
filled in properly to ensure that match-ups and point totals are correct. Once Results Sheets are
completed they are to be turned in at the counter so the scores can be entered into the
computer.
BATTLES:
The Fifth Edition Rulebook will be in use for all games and will be the definitive guide
for all rules. The time limit for each game is 2.5 hours. At the end of this time limit, the round will be called; all players will need to finish their game immediately, and no additional time will be provided.
What You Need to Bring with You:
-Your (hopefully painted) miniatures
-At least THREE copies of your army list
-Rulebooks and any additional books you need
-Pen and paper
-Dice and templates
-Tape measure
-Something to transport your army from table to table
Store Credit Awards will be given out to:
Store credit is good for any product in the store and all subsequent events. It never expires and will be saved for you.
Best Generals
Second Best Generals
Third Best Generals (only awarded if the turnout is large)
Best Theme / Comp / Sportsmanship (team)
Best Painted (individual)
Note: a team may only win one award.
Please post any questions or comments here.

Wow, another one already? I'll try to make this one!
-
Chase You need to hold one of these everyother month
-
hmm....that was quick...i wonder what army im going to play
-
We will see how this one goes. If it fills up quick, everybody has a good time, and the environment remains friendly, fun, and lacks a ton of WAAC (Win At All Costs), cheesy, no-fun-to-play-against lists we will continue to do them roughly every other month until the Megabattle stuff heats up.
My current idea is to run Doubles in Jan, 1850 Singles in Feb. After that point who knows where we will be at.
Too many events might end up taking away from the "feel" I want the Doubles events to have. With large turnouts, and therefore large prizes, I fear that the "spirit" of the event may be jeopardized if we run them too frequently. Above all else I want every team to walk away feeling like they just played in an awesome, fun, different event that they feel proud to tell their friends about. Up until this point I think we've managed to achieve close to that and our goal is to continue to get better.
Remember, this event is still 1.5 months away, so it's not like it's right around the corner. I feel like it will fill up fast though... so let me know. ;)
-
Sign me up with Eric W. I'll be playing Space Marines...and he'll be playing...something. I dunno yet.
-
Since samy Sam has a army this time its space wolfs, space wolfs.
-
Sean and I will be there...
-
Don't think I can make this one... most likely will be working a company merger that weekend...
-
Who's man enough to team with the forces of black legion? (me)
-
Had some quick questions, I have a new unit I want to test out but with the upcoming holidays I doubt I'll be able to get them done;
-Do model's have to be painted?
-Are there points for painting, if so how much?

Nope.

Nope. Painting will be judged (and awarded) independently and will have no effect on your teams score in the event.
-
I will be there for my first tourney with you guys.
-
Awesome news, Torvald. Shoot me an email with your name, your partners name, and the armies you are likely to play as soon as you know you're coming for sure.
And just a reminder to some of the newer people who are interested: The event is being held at the Plainville location. (see original post)
-
Having struggles finding a partner. If anyone needs one let me know.
-
Torvald, it looks like Dave Goss is in need of a partner. Look at SkavenKnight's post a few above this.

You and Jeff? are you sure :)
-
I'm good this time. :)
Last time the wife-wised up and realized that I'd be "dorking" it up for 2 weekends in a row and put the kiabosh on it.
Hopefully Troy and I will get a chance to beat down your army again Alan, though you can always hide behind your son ;D

You and your partner should bring that "Unbeatable List" of yours. What better way to show it off than at the tournament? ::)
-
Why should we? went undefeated last time, and we will do so again. what makes you think we need any more help? ;)
-

well, i count 3 pros and 3 noobs that called you out and you were a no-show. if i were unbeatable, i would have no problem coming down and proving it when i have no partner to hide behind.
if you don't want people to question your manhood, show up saturday in abington and we'll see who's penis is bigger. now if you look at my sig, theres only one reason for you to run away from me. ;)
see you at the doubles tournament. good luck!
-
When I'm in the state of MA and have the time to deign to play a game of such one-sidedness, then by all means. Meanwhile, in NY, attending the more worthwhile endeavors (involving learning new things rather than reiterating those already confirmed), I believe that I still offered to play in the only feasible way possible (via VASSAL). If you feel the need to play me, please hit me up and let me know (keeping in mind, I don't feel like a 10 hour round trip to play a 40k game I know I'll win just to boost my ego).
I'm confident in my status as a good player; I don't need numbers in a signature to boost it.
Nothing in your signature makes me so much as bat an eyelash.
See you at the tournament bro.
-
I'm looking forward to it. How many guardsmen should I plan on slaughtering?
-
Did you guys win Ragnar?
If not in the immortal words of Ricky Bobby;
"If you ain't first your last!"
*As a side note SkaveKnight I don't think anyone want to hear about how many newbie's you've fell in love with!

sh... a boy can dream :D

I love this so much it just became my Sig.
Ragnar you bailed once on my challenge so I hope we get a chance to throw down at the tourny because you wont be able to duck me there. Game on!

Undefeated has but a single definition. That you people hold 40k over college is quite evident to me now.
-
Undefeated does not mean win. I just came back from a GT where there were several undefeated people and they didn't win squat!
I went 1W-2T-2L and won a major award go figure.
In the immortal words of my brother "You know what 2nd place is right? 1st of the loser's!"
Just saying...
-
I have no problems with a healthy amount of smack talk. Please don't take it to a personal level though. Remember, we're all supposed to be having fun here. :)

there is no college that accepts trolls :P
-
To the both of you, and you both know who you are. If your going to insult someone about their education please at least have the common decency to use proper grammer.
-
You don't need an education to play 40k!
But if you do need one how is a BS and 6 minor's and graduating near the top of the class?
Not saying I have one but if I did what would it matter? A good friend of mine is a professor of anthropology (with a doctorate), he's good at 40k but didn't win his last 40k game, what does that mean?
If I went to college the most important thing I would have learned is education doesn't matter, oh yea and how to drink like a fish!
-
On the flip side I did go to college and learned 2 things very well.
1. Without experience education means crap.
2. How to chug a beer in less then 2 sec.
Neither of these have anything to do with 40k. But unlike some I manage to play toy soldiers pretty good.
-
Ahem. SPERG!!!!!!!
Also a win is a win unless you were a poor sport about it. Then you are just being an Internet tough guy.
-
there is no college that accepts trolls :P
my point exactly.
I manage to play toy soldiers pretty good.
Just saying, my partner beat you bad in the last round at Boston Brawl, just to refresh ya.
also, I believe that Moosifer stated it best. give it an f-in rest guys.
my OP "can't. wait. hee hee hee"
-
Let me make a suggestion that we move this conversation to another thread or please PM me. I would love to hear more about this.
However this isnt the proper place for this discussion as it is Chase's tourny thread and there's no need to clutter this topic any further
-

Sorry, I found that rather amusing. ;D
Also was the Boston Brawl a real event? How many people even showed up?
Beating someone only matters if there was something at stake.
-
Never claimed I could Spell.
Lets move this to a new thread no need to clutter the tourny thread with this.
-
Heh, Glass houses. Ragnar, I know you from the DP days.

Heh, Glass houses. Ragnar, I know you from the DP days.
Did you get any of his collector's glasses from DP? i hear they go for like $3.49 on eBay!

I don't know if anyone is needing a team mate, But I just calculated that I can have 1250 points of Eldar ready for the event. Bear in mind I haven't played them yet so I have no idea what I'm getting into, but barring that there is always Necrons, though I'd prefer to play the shiny new (read "built but unpainted) Eldar. So if anyones looking for a partner let me know.
-
excuse me? I believe your metaphor to be misplaced. if you have anything to say to me, say it at the tournament.

In a twist of irony, I will be holding college over 40k that day.

Figured.

The event currently has 1 spot left. Can we get Ron a partner?
-
Ron can partner with Rick...
-
OK. Rick who?
-
If hes up to it. Rick James
-
OK. Rick who?
JAMES, B*TCH
-
If he's up for it. Sounds good.
-
Rick James (BITCH!) :P
His handle is Moosifer. And yes, his name really is Rick James. ;)
EDIT: Ninja'd! (And by a good 6 hours) I really ought to read the following pages before posting... :P
-
I know him (I just wasn't sure which Rick he was talking about).
-
Rick messaged me. Put us down for it!
-
I spoke to Rick last night, Ron. You guys are all set.
The event is now full and has 1 alternate team. I will post the full roster when I get to the store tonight.
-
The event is capped. 30 teams in two weeks isn't bad. Many of our regular guys either didn't sign up or missed the window this time around too. Pretty rad to have 60 people playing in one event. It will be the largest event in Battleground history. Bigger than our biggest Magic tournament even.
Here's the list of teams:
Jason Harrison + Craig Pollard
Ed Beatty + Sam Soko

My Partner and I will be at Plainville on Saturday December 18th looking for some practice if anyone is interested.
-
I will probably be at the store on Saturday. I'd need to convince a friend to play with me but I'd love to play against you and your partner. what time do you think you'd be there?
-
We usually get there fairly early (around opening) and as long as people are there we will stay all day. It is about an hour ride for us so try to stay as long as possible.
-
Just a reminder folks. I need your teams list ASAP. After Christmas I'm going to start spamming the you all so please help me out and get your lists in.
-
Chase,
Thru much debate Jeff and I have decided on a list. We spent a few hour converting some models and would like to make sure you approve of the models so there are no issues come tourny day.
We will be playing a Duel Ork Kill Kan army. Which has roughly 18 Kill Kans. So we went to work and made the kans.
Please let us know about the conversion we worked hard on it but want to make sure it is a legal build.
PS. Please dont worry we will be priming these before game day.
-
i don't think 18 kans is legal. 9 kans is legal.
-
I'm not sure if you're serious or not, Troy, but I'm going to have to say no to those Kans.
It would set a precedent that I don't want.
-
NNNNoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All those wasted hours!!!
;)
-
Chase,
As I respect your descision I would like the chance to try and change your mind. Jeff and I spent hours making these very sharp looking Kans and I feel I must come to bat in its defense.
If it would help you change your mind we are willing to adjust our builds with hatches from rhinos so that they are at least 50% GW material. This would take many more hours in production but we would be willing to compromise with you on this.
Ragnar,
18 Killa Kups is so legal please tell me the page you think this rule lands on as I am sure you have false information.
-
First off, Killa Kups is not a unit listed in the Ork codex. But please tell me the page you think this rule lands on as I am sure you have false information.
As far as Killa Kans are concerned, 3 heavy support choices per team at 3 Kans per squad equals 9. Do you still want the page number?
-
This is win. ;)
-
Ragnar,
You must be seriously out of touch with your codex if you do not know of the Killa Kup unit and and please pertaining to your ruling of these kill kans I definitly would like a page number. I am concerned that you are such an avid Ork fan and you are having such trouble with your codex.
Chase,
I await your reassessment of Jeff and I's hard work.
Thank you,
Grim
-
So,
Looks like Dave Goss' original partner can now play with 100% certainty so now I am out a partner...
I sent a message to someone asking if they needed one for the 2V2 but should they be all set I may be on the outside looking in if I can't find a partner which would be very disheartening. I signed up early for the 2V2 and would hate to miss it due to this.
Anyone willing to join a Dark Eldar in a bit of carnage?
-
hmm no 18 kanz sounds much....
but 9 kanz and 2 deffdreads is legal in this tourney. I say grab a big gulp or two and convert away.
;D ;D ;D
-
Thank the gods that we've got people like jester....
But for the benefit of others, direct quotations will suffice I suppose.
***note: all quotations refer to Codex: Orks, 4th Edition, unless otherwise noted in the following***
"USING A FORCE ORGANIZATION CHART
The army lists are used in conjunction with a force organisation [yes, the codex has a typo in it] chart from a scenario. Each chart is split into five categories that correspond to the sections in the army list, and each category has one or more boxes. Each box indicates that you may make one choice from that section of the army list, while a dark-toned box indicates a compulsory selection. We've included the chart used for Standard Missions [and, what do you know?!?! the chart for the upcoming tournament, derp] below" (page 94).

Also, rather than type out the unit entry, I assumed a copy of it would be more helpful

And, finally, if some players have somehow misconstrued the Big Mek rule titled' Da Big Mek', listed on page 97 of your Ork codices, if these players should have access to one, allows one Deff Dread to be taken as a Troops choice (as the learned jester has already accurately mentioned).
I think from now on I'll need your page numbers for special rules and army list questions.

WHAT YOU CANNOT DO WITH GAMES WORKSHOP'S INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Please read the following in conjunction with the What you can do section above and the Specific Examples section below. Other than a few exemptions, Games Workshop is not obliged to let anyone use its IP at all (for example, it's a widely held misconception that you can freely make use of someone else's copyrights, without their permission, as long as it's for your own private use - this is currently not an automatic exemption to copyright), and accordingly we always insist that our IP is treated with the respect that we feel that it deserves.
So, If you are using or want to use our intellectual property and you do not have a written license with us, you must not:
- Make any direct copies and/or scans of Games Workshop publications, images, or other materials. This includes any Out-o- Production materials, web site materials, and White Dwarf articles. We would however suggest that you produce your own materials (as long as you follow the other requirements of this policy
4. Counterfeiting/Peer-to-Peer File Sharing
We are encountering people who counterfeit our miniatures and products more and more frequently. Counterfeiting is a crime in most countries worldwide. In addition to the other penalties, you can go to prison for counterfeiting. The same is true of peer-to-peer file sharing - if you have not paid for the material and you download it using peer-to-peer software, you are engaging in illegal activity. The same is true even if you already own a copy of the relevant Codex or Army Book. Please remember that Games Workshop does not produce its rule books or codices in electronic format - if you ever see any such material in electronic format, it is likely to be the product of criminal or infringing activity

with the question of paper cup knock-offs of Killa Kans, are you seriously going after me for using a scanner to utilize labeled outside sources, cited properly? I'll load a friggin works cited addendum for you if your feelings have been hurt.
***The following is a quotation which is GW IP***
"General Principles
- Please make it clear that your use is unofficial by including some wording to the effect that, for example, "This website is completely unofficial and in no way endorsed by Games Workshop Limited." Are people likely to be confused as to whether your web site or any material was produced by Games Workshop just by looking at it? If so, then you need to alter it. In other words, do not try to make your material look "official."
- Please do not change our trademarks in any way (e.g., stretch or deform them)
- Include an appropriate disclaimer on your web site from the list on the following webpage
- Please make the origins of the intellectual property very clear, in other words, make sure that from a brief review of your material people know that you are unofficially using Games Workshop's intellectual property (and not your own IP or the IP of a third party).
- Make any direct copies and/or scans of Games Workshop publications, images, or other materials. This includes any Out-o- Production materials, web site materials, and White Dwarf articles. We would however suggest that you produce your own materials (as long as you follow the other requirements of this policy)." I have made the proper changes!

Oh, and Mr. Chef,
In your direct copy of the GW Legal page of 'Do and Do not Do',
there are neither quote marks, nor are there abundantly clear statements that what you have posted is GW IP. Your only reference is at the bottom of the post, and, to the cursory reader, cannot be easily seen. In this regard and in accordance with GW legal, I have reported you to the proper authorities.
GW Legal has been notified.

Someone please remind me to give a small speech before I call out the round 1 pairings the day of the event. Seriously, don't let me forget.
This is important.
Really, remind me.
-------------------------------
Oh yeah, and about the Killa Kups - After further review the 18x Killa Kup list has my full endorsement to be used in exhibition games up to and after the day of the event.
I appreciate the countless hours, blood, sweat, tears, souls, and sporks that have gone into creating the beasts but I can not approve them for this tournament.
Much love though, much love. /gang symbol

Why, oh why, is there a legal debate on this thread?
-
Please remember that Games Workshop does not produce its rule books or codices in electronic format - if you ever see any such material in electronic format, it is likely to be the product of criminal or infringing activity

Chase,
Thank you for your consideration an regretfully the awesomeness of this army will have to sit by the wayside. But.... Ah thats all I got.
-
Well that was entertaining.
Next....
-
Are you using the Command Counters option for these scenarios?
-
Yes.
-
Mien God... I turn my back on this topic for a few weeks and look what happens. Sheesh. Chase, I'll have those lists to you ASAP. Looking like Necrons and Dark Eldar, the nearly forgotten races of 40k. My brother will be making a rare appearance, provided he doesn't go chasing some skirt the night before in a bar again.
To the Killer Kups folks... kudos on the konversions, but I'd have to object too about playing against those in a tournament. I don't say this because I think I'm some big shot, but just to show Chase isn't the only one who thinks that way. In a kausal game, sure, it'd be awesome, but in a tournament, there is that 50% GW rule that I just can't abandon, and feel it would be unfair to someone who actually went out and bought those expensive pieces of kit. Still, the Mega Battle is koming up, and I'd love to see them stomping face there! Ok, I'll stop it with the ks.
Other than that, good luck at the tournament guys, and I'll be seeing you soon, as I disdainfuly gaze out at you from underneath the skin of your face that I am now wearing over mine. Bwahahahahahaha!

A Little late on this dont you think... And just for the record with your 50% BS they would of had Rhino hatched to make them 50% so that point is mute.
-
Hey Chase,
How do the teams look for this weekend?

No, I don't think I was a little late, otherwise I wouldn't have said anything. Also, the 50% isn't my rule, that's just a standard in most tournaments. I forget how BG does it, but in my gaming group when we do a tournament we adhere to that rule only because if we didn't, GW would revoke any future prize support they might have offered otherwise. Models such as yours would have had to passed a review in order to be used. And you would need a lot of hatches to make all of those Kans 50% enough for GW to not be pissed off. I'm not knocking the models or saying that you don't have enough hatches, I'm just stating a reason why most tournament restrictions are more stringent than causal play. Still, I hope you bring a nasty Ork army, and perhaps we'll get a chance to settle this dispute on the battlefield like gentlemen. I'll be the tall guy with the Dark Eldar, partnered with Necrons. (Chase, I swear I'll get that list to you tonight.)
-
Hey Chase,
How do the teams look for this weekend?
The teams are looking pretty good. I am in the process of chasing down the last few lists and will begin to look them over tonight.
Sadly, it does not look like the alternates will end up getting a spot. :( I have been in touch with the "flakey" teams and they have all said they are going to play.
-
I love it. And why no deamons I have had such fun with them in the past...
No Ork love here. My Ork army is still sitting half unassembled. It took all my effort to create such awesomeness that I cant find it in my gut to make anything else Ork.
On as side note -- I am working on a 2 Liter Gargant!!!

Bad ass. That sounds awesome and very Orky of you. I just got a bunch of new Dark Eldar, so I'm trying them out now instead of the Daemons. And excuse my ignorance, but who is Grimwulfe?

The fuzzy guy that plays Space Wolves.

Wait, Troy? The guy who immobilized a Monolith and wrecked the other turn 1 with his only two razorbacks last tournament? Holy hell. I think I'd rather go up against 18 of those Kups instead of those two tanks and his wolf riders of doom.
-
Troy indeed.
-
Scruffy looking nerf herder!
-
Almost all of the lists are in and checked.
People who's lists I need:
Sam Soko
Paul Gauhran
Jake Polqwioruw905r8w90er8w908er (whatever)
Dave Haber-Mattie
Eric Norris
John Norris
If you know these people, spam them until they tell you I've got their list.
-
The Norris clan is perpetually late. I think I spelled perpetually correctly.
-
Scott actually sent me the lists right when I asked and in sweet, Army Builder .pdf fashion too. :)
Eric has not so much as responded to a couple emails and a facebook post though.
/shrug
Only so much I can do I guess. ;)
Worst come to worst and we check them day of.

With the potential of a storm on Fri/Sat, is the a snow date for the tourney? I plan on comming unless there's like 2 feet of snow.
-
can anybody bring a copy of the BA codex? I'd appreciate it lots. whole lots, actually.
thanks in advance

I haven't kept up on the storm very much. Last I heard it was downgraded from a blizzard to a storm and we are supposed to get 2-6 inches.
The event is on unless its a snowpocalypse like the other weekend.
(If I have to email 60 people AGAIN for this thing I'm going to take a bolter to the brain.)
-
I've kindly reminded Paul on Facebook 4 times already to send you his list. Hopefully that'll be enough. :P
