This years Megabattle will be played on one, giant table. This table will be 48'x6'. (12 4'x6' tables)
-
Aww i was hopeing for a 13 table long one..so we could mention more than 50 feet of table.
-
We can just add 2' to the long end, just so we can, Josh... :P
-
This will be interesting specialy with deep striking, drop pods, and fliers
-
Any special rules/restrictions for the table?
-

*looks over at my Daemon army* Yeah. Interesting. The part I'm looking forward to most is needing to be on the other side of the table...

Yikes! "Hold on a minute, I need to go measure something from your side."
-
Will it be chaotic? Absolutely.
Will it be awesome. Absolutely.
Teamwork, people. Teamwork.
I suggest having a buddy in the case where you'll be running all over the place.
If you're a savvy player, I think you'll have plenty of time to run all over and get your stuff done. The first round is always 3-4 hours long anyways.
-
Any special rules/restrictions for the table?
Yup.
Be cool.
Have fun.
Goofy stuff is goofy.
Let's shoot for an aesthetically pleasing table because I want to send pics to GW and get us in White Dwarf. This means giant robots en masse are allowed, but I'd love to see them left at home.
An example: I'd rather see Rich take An'ggrath and Scabeiathrax over the Banelord, even though the Banelord is fun and cool.
Example 2: I'd rather see Captain Brian field anything other than 6-10 stompas. It's just sort of dumb. Doable and legal, but dumb.
-
You guys should write everyone's army lists.
-
That comment doesn't surprise me.
-
I think Brian is *only* bringing 5 stompas and a bad@$$ skullhammer that will be playing music from a legit orc band.

Ok, then can we get an idea of the table's layout? We've less than a month to prepare for it now.
-

That was a joke, to clarify. Despite being on the internet for most of my adult life, I still forget things don't translate well to text.
That being said, I would rather see hard and fast restrictions on datasheets or super heavies in the future rather than the current shame-based enforcement. As we've seen, everyone has different ideas of what would be appropriate for this sort of event. Having very clear limits would give you the feel you're looking for without putting players in an odd position where they may offend you with their army choices despite having the freedom to make them.

+1. Embrace the idea of everything allowed wholeheartedly or embrace the restrictions wholeheartedly.

I asked Derek for this the other day. Hopefully he gets it out ASAP.

Everything is fine and legal. No restrictions on models, other than they have to get approval from Kevin.
I am happy if people are happy. If people want to bring giant things that they've spent time on, great. They probably deserve to. I won't be offended by much. The people capable of bringing giant models are the people most in touch with our "idea" and "desired feel". They're probably pretty in touch with what the rest of their team is bringing too. Having that ability and info, it's on them to do what they want to do. I think asking those people to use their best judgement is reasonable.
We've been put in a bizarre position with respect to restrictions based on the number of people playing vs. number of people we were aiming for.
When dealing with one table, no real restrictions is definitely a better policy than trying to micro manage things in a hard, fast way. If people want to do very un-fun things, like bringing 15 Pulsa Rockets, I'm going to tell them to think of something else. I don't think anyone can legitimately argue against something like that.
In a perfect world I'd see a game similar to year one, where a titan or two were around, a pylon, a handful of baneblades, a giant demon with an axe the size of a landspeeder, tons and tons of codex stuff, etc. *I* think it makes for a more fun game. Obviously people have different opinions and ideas. We want to make sure almost all of those opinions has a place.
I guess it's sort of like how I'd prefer to play in a multiplayer game of Magic where Kokusho and other instant win, kill everyone combos are left at home. *I* think it makes for a more fun game. Some people love that stuff though...
Do we last minute ban / restrict Kokusho and every other card or combo like it and listen to people endlessly complain about this and that, or do we just ask people to leave that sort of stuff at home and hope that the people who it actually applies to decide to play nice?
The options are:
1) Ban / restrict stuff and listen to people complain.
2) Don't ban or restrict anything and ask (the very few) people to cooperate (as defined by them).
3) Not worry about anything and risk seeing a goofy looking board or sending a person or few home extremely unhappy.
I'd much rather people think I'm a carebear, douche bag, idiot, ego-maniac, wishy-washy, retard, asshole, or whatever vs. have a weird looking table or send a new / casual player home with a bad taste in his mouth because he paid 50 bucks, gave up a Saturday in June, and had a miserable experience with a game he's interested in. That's terrible for the game, terrible for the mood in the room, terrible for the future of the Megabattle, and terrible for the business.
Do I think any of this will happen? Nope.
Am I wasting my time writing this? Probably.

You probably could have just written this.
I just wanted to make sure it didn't happen in the future. I understand the position you guys are in.

*Looks over the 5 stompas and skullhamma*
Sorry, but I needed to fill points, would you rather I drop a stompa or 2 and field 3k points?
I have no problem doing it if that's what you'd rather see...how many super heavies was disorder planning to have anyways? Just curious

If anything someone will just shoot at one and blow up the entire army of one of my... their teammates again.

Well sadly I can't do that without using that many stompas :/

Then use that many stompas -- I can't wait to see that many on the table.

Got maps?

Should be coming soonish. Derek's got the designs.

soonish? like before the Mega battle ? ;)
-
Sorry for the delay, but I've had to readjust my original ideas due to the changes in both the size of the expected (hoped for) turnout and the conjoining of all the tables. I will aim to have basic maps posted before the end of the week.

I do have one question....I know that Chase said no restrictions....The one thing I'm nervous about is Emperor Titans.....The moon looked like no fun last year. I know stuff is going to die...In droves...Quickly. To me this event is about fun for all not fun for some. I just think Emperor Titans on one long table can case negative cloud over the whole thing. I may be way off base but it just makes me nervous that people spent a ton of time preping for the event and then get wiped out befor they even do anything from the other end of the table.

Emperor Titans have what? 20 structure points? And they have like a 3 foot wide profile at the base? Flank march/Deep strike/Punch through to get inside the void shields and take them down with everything you've got. Especially considering everybody is on the one table now, that means everybody could contribute to this goal. It's what you'd need to completely wipe a person's army of the board, and that's what it is - they're not going to have an army, just the titan (which, in fairness, probably is an army).
They're powerful and can blow up a lot of things in one shot, which may not be fun if you don't go in ready for that. But then again so can my reaver (and even my warhound... lol at Ron's pretty Pylon). I wouldn't worry.

Black Emperor (v2) is almost done...

I happen to agree with this 100%.
The flip side is that some people WANT to see it and WANT to play against it. They'll get to tell people they played in a game with an Emperor Titan, and hopefully say they played in a game where they killed an Emperor Titan.
Where as it can be the saddest moment of the Megabattle to have a large portion of your army removed, it will certainly be the best moment of the Megabattle if/when it dies.
I really, really hope the the people using titans use discretion when firing them off. The Emperor is really the only one who can literally kill an entire 4000 point army in 1 round. Here's hoping it's shots get spread out instead of pointed down the throat of 1 other player.

Black Emperor (v2) is almost done...
Sadly, this type of comment does way more harm than good. I know what's going on here, but most don't. People get upset and my inbox fills up. :(

Understandable. People might get worried now that they know the Black Emperor is coming back. But it's okay, they'll be fine!

Four people just quit the Megabattle.
Thanks guys!

I'm pretty sure at least 5 people had fun on the moon table :)
Seriously though, with enough prep (and the opposing team being fair-minded gentlemen with their army lists despite their trash talk) anything can be taken down.
-
Okay.
Alright so the black emperor is dead. Like dead dead. Like was taken apart and I think the head is the only thing that is left.
Thanks to some structural issues, it collapsed under its own weight last year.
While the "joke" was to say it was returning, I fear people were not able to take it as such. It was supposed to be the chaos boogeyman but it appears that it was too successful at hiding in the minds of people.
So again I say, the Black Emperor is dead. As "co-conspirator" who helped build it, I can say for certainty it is dead. Hell, the person who fielded it is on Order this year.
As for the Huron's Emperor? It is not covered in D weapons. It has all sorts of fun things that are not vortex missiles and not turbo lasers. It has some but to be sure, you will get cover saves from most of the weapons.
Many armies were built around the idea of multiple tables. Sorry. Sorry we ran with the idea of propaganda and trash talking. If those who dropped, want to come back, I can drop out as I seemed to have caused some of this issue.

Burn the witch!
-
I wish that sort false intel, rumor spreading, and propaganda could always be fun, but people get legitimately scared and upset.
:(
-
How about how I'm bringing 900 Toughness 2 Zombies?
-
I'm pretty much over caring what people bring (for the most part).
I sweat it too much. Things typically work out fine.

While it is true we had some drops over the past week, none of them were related to the Black Emperor post. All but one were schedule conflicts.
Propaganda vs. propaganda!

This is the most manic thread I have ever been a part of.

I think we should all calm down a bit. There are a myriad of ways that your army can be instantly obliterated in a game of Apocalypse. With 80,000 points per side, if the enemy team suddenly decides that they wants your 4000 point army dead, it's dead. Even if we only allowed Codex units, and banned all datasheets and assets, it'd still be 80000 points on 4000. Emperor Titans are just one nice big scapegoat for everyone to be angry at when it's suddenly pointed in their direction.
I think the person I feel most sorry for in all of this is the guy who's actually bringing the Emperor. I don't know him personally, but assembling an Emperor Titan is no small feat and I'm sure he poured many hours of his life into constructing one. Yet he is completely vilified for bringing one to the single game type it's allowed in. It seems like for him, there's two possible outcomes: either his Titan is destroyed/crippled in 1 turn, and he basically gets to do nothing, or it survives and inflicts damage appropriate for a 4000 point model, in which case people whine about the fact that he dared to put it on the table. Seems like the poor guy can't win.
I understand peoples' reservations to be pitted against such a towering monstrosity, but just remember that it's not the only army-busting option available to either side. It's just something that needs to be accounted for when forming a strategy for your side, and there are plenty of resources available for destroying or disabling a single model.
In short, it's not as big a deal as people make it out to be. Everything being on one table means that there's more than adequate resources to deal with pretty much any silly shenanigans from the other side. In many ways it's actually a better case than everyone being split up.
I do hope the people that dropped out reconsider joining, as I think the more people we have, the better the event will be.

There is no way that anyone can win this year's Megabattle.
Both sides are doomed to lose so horribly that they will probably have to fight to the death in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn just to bring a sense of closure.
I will record this battle to the death and post it on Youtube.
Right after I finish the Megabattle 2009 video, that is.
