**This event will be the FORTH in a series of Battleground 40k Invitational Qualifier Tournaments.  The Invitational will take place in December of 2012.**

RULES FOR WARHAMMER 40K TOURNAMENT

Rule Books:
The Warhammer 40,000 Fifth Edition Rules will be used.

The following is a list of legal army choices:
Codex: Black Templars
Codex: Blood Angels
Codex: Chaos Daemons
Codex: Chaos Space Marines
Codex: Grey Knights
Codex: Dark Angels
Codex: Dark Eldar
Codex: Eldar
Codex: Imperial Guard
Codex: Necrons
Codex: Orks
Codex: Space Marines
Codex: Space Wolves
Codex: Tau Empire
Codex: Tyranids
Codex: Sister of Battle (White Dwarf)

MODELS AND POINTS:

1. Each player must bring an army consisting of 1500 points (but no fewer than 1475), in accordance with these rules...

2. All models must follow “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG). All weapons, war gear, and so forth must be represented on the model.

3. Unfortunately, Forge World Imperial Armor units (and army lists) may NOT be used in this event.  Forge world models may be used where appropriate, however.

4. We will require that each player submits an itemized army list to a Battleground Tournament Organizer on or before June 11th, 2012 (roughly a week before the event).  An Army Builder .pdf is preferred but a detailed text file (.txt) is acceptable.

Please email lists to ChaseLaq@gmail.com as soon as they are finalized.

5. If illegal units or other rules violations are found in a player’s army list, at a minimum,
the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. In addition, tournament points may be deducted and/or award eligibility may be forfeited. If in doubt, please ask for clarification in advance from a Battleground Tournament Organizer.

The scenarios we will be using for the event will be announced at a later date. I will be choosing scenarios from one of the larger GT events (Adepticon or NOVA) and may make very slight modifications to the wording such that it accurately describes our event.

HOW THE TOURNAMENT WORKS:

• Competitors will participate in three (3) games over the course of the day. In each game, you
will play a scenario and record the outcome of the battle on your results sheet. Each round you
will play a different opponent.  Each round will last 2 hours.

• In the first round, players will be matched up randomly. After the first round, players will be
matched up according to current rankings in the tournament (based on the number of points they've scored) e.g., the player in first place will play the player in second place and so on. We will try our best not to pair players that come to the event together in the first round. If a player receives a BYE they will be awarded the average of the winning players points for the round.

• You will not play the same person twice.

• We will do our best to prevent a player from playing on the same table twice.

• The pairings for each round will be announced as soon as they are determined. Please be sure to arrive at your table ready to play right away.

• Slow playing will NOT be tolerated.  Players are expected to complete at least 4 rounds.  If you suspect your opponent is slow playing PLEASE notify a Battleground staff member as soon as possible as we can not do anything about alleged slow play after the fact.

• Each game will be played on a 4' x 6' board.

• Players will receive Results Sheets at the beginning of each round. Each results sheet must be filled in properly to ensure that match-ups and point totals are correct. Once Results Sheets are completed they are to be turned in at the counter so the scores can be entered into the computer.

BATTLES:

The Fifth Edition Rulebook will be in use for all games and will be the definitive guide for all rules. The time limit for each game is 2 hours. At the end of this time limit, the round will be called; all players will need to finish their game immediately, and no additional time will be provided (dice down).

We will be using the INAT FAQ (http://www.dakkadakka.com/s/up/INATFAQv5.1.pdf) for this event.

What You Need to Bring with You:
-Your (hopefully painted) miniatures
-At least TWO copies of your army list
-Rulebooks are required as are any additional books you need
-Pen and paper
-Dice and templates
-Tape measure
-Something to transport your army from table to table

STORE CREDIT AWARDS WILL BE GIVEN OUT TO:
Store credit is good for any product in the store and all subsequent events.  It never expires and will be saved for you.

Best General
Second Best General
Third Best General

Fourth Best General - Only awarded if we have 32 or more players

Best Appearance - Army
(There will not be an award for the best looking single miniature for this event.)

Players Choice - The Players Choice award will go to the player that the others feel best reflects important aspects of the hobby.  Every person will score their opponents on sportsmanship, theme, rules knowledge, appearance, and overall awesomeness.  **This award will be significant.**
Smokin' Boots - You got crushed... and you deserve an award for your epic failure.

• A note on the Appearance awards - We will award the individual who we feel has the best looking army. We will use a scoring rubric that looks at painting, basing, display boards, and various other "extras" to determine the winner.

• A player may only receive one award with the exception of the Appearance award, which may be awarded to anyone, regardless of their other accolades.

I'm sort of excited for what people have to say about 1500 points.

It should switch things up a bit from the normal 1850 and 2000 point games we see all the time.  Gotta keep people on their toes before I club them over the head with a bunch of 2000 point events (and 6th ed).

Yup, the feedback I got told me it would create some very tough choices.  That's exactly what I want.

I'll be there, and I think its awesome. I was playing at the Game On Doubles yesterday, and Dean asked me what they should run for their next singles tournament, and I said '1500' before being scoffed at. 1500 (besides being the point level GW seems to like) makes list-building more difficult and leads to interesting lists one doesn't normally see. I'm all for it.

Assuming I an get everything painted in time, I'll be running an army of Karamozov/Monkeys/Crazy People.

... and I said '1500' before being scoffed at.
I like to think of BG as a scoff-free environment. There are lots of reasons to run different point tournaments, if for no other reason than other places always run the same values.

Oh ho!   That is very sneaky, 1500 is only 250 more points than 1250.  So you are saying I can just take my new 1250 team, add a little bit, and now I can take it to the next singles tournament.  From there it's just a short trip to making it another "real army".  Man... you are too good... sigh

It's weird, but I have no problems fitting two completely different "perfect" lists (in terms of my plan, not that they are the best list ever) within 1500 pts, while 1750 and 1850 can be hard for me.

It's just the very granular nature of GK lists, at least the way I play them.  My units tend to cost 2-300 pts (or 500) and 1500 and 2000 everything fits in nicely, 1850 not so much.

I like it.  A little clarification on mission 3.....it says "Score 1 point for each objective you control in this manner throughout the game. "  That speak to me of it not needing to be controlled at the end of the game, but are we talking you score one point a round, or if you have discovered it, it's "lit" for you and you can move on to the next one?

Another Clarification on Mission 3 on the Primary Objective. This Means it must be a scoring unit that is not in a Transport correct? If I have a Scoring unit on a Bike he can still score right?

Those are definitely interesting scenarios that encourage much more dynamic games. Looks fine to me! (Says the player aiming for top-half.)

You will score 1 point per objective you control in the manner described, at the time described.

At the end of the game, compare your "score" to your opponents "score."  If you score is higher, you win and receive 8 points.  If the scores are the same, it's a draw and you both receive 4 points.  If your score is lower, you lose and score 0 points.

I suppose I should change the phrase "score points" to "earn points" so that no one is confused by seeing the same phrase used to describe two different things.

I hope this helps.

This is an interesting question and likely wasn't considered.

I would imagine scoring units would have to be out of their transports in order to score.  I will ask Keith how he feels about bikers scoring.  I'd imagine he will say that they're allowed to, but I could be wrong.

Well, I really wanted to make it out for this one but unfortunately I have to work that Saturday morning and am unlikely to finish in any decent time frame.

Can't help but notice those documents are a little bare-bones presentation-wise. While there's nothing wrong with that, of course, I figured I'd offer to format them for you guys, since you've always been so nice to me and my people I certainly wouldn't mind helping out in my own little way (especially since I can't be there). I have about a thousand different 40k-themed templates I can copy and paste them into in about 20 minutes, tops. I recently announced my inevitable retirement from Evil Dice so these things aren't going to see much use up my end of things.

Don't worry, I won't be in vehicles to claim objectives either!

(Besides, fairly solid rumors you won't be able to claim objectives while in vehicles in 6th, another rumor is that vehicles won't be able to contest either).

Nice!   "Real man objectives" for mission 3.  That's like 1 of the missions at this past TempleCon, which I think is the best 40k mission I've played... here's hoping it's how objectives work in 6th!

I'm sorry, either you thought I was asking something else or I didn't understand your answer.  I do understand that you're simply trying to outscore your opponent, and who ever wins that will get the points. (which is zero sum, and I like)

Let me rephrase:  Can you score on the same objective more than once?  Can I score a pt for an objective one turn, the next turn, and so on, or is it once I score an ojective once, am I done with it, and should move on?

I.e. if there are 5 objectives, can I score a max of 5 objectives, or 5x6 (or however many rounds there is?

Oh, I thought that part was clear.  ;)

You score points for objectives you control at the end of your opponents turn, after their turn 2.

It'll be scored twice each round.  Once for you, and once for your opponent.

Just to be super clear, yeah, in a 6 round game with 5 objectives there will be a total of 25 objective points available.

That aside it was tons of fun as usual, and i did something i never thought would ever happen at a tournament... played 2 separate games against sisters of battles armies lol

Awesome day as always taking my new army out in a tournament setting for the first time after only 1 practice game. Played three great games against three great guys and generals was a total blast.

As always the event was run seamlessly and timely.

Sam thanks for answering the many rules questions I ended up having due to playing a new army.

Everyone thought I was crazy for buying that horse but I knew he would be a winner!

Three of the 10 horses in the field, including 1941 Triple Crown winner Whirlaway, perished from exhaustion during the running.

Chase and the Battleground community at large:

Thanks for an excellent tournament.  I had three great games, and really enjoyed seeing different army builds from the standards.

Chase:

When might we be seeing standings and an update to Invitational stats?

Results and current standings will be posted sometime later today (before I go to sleep).  This may or may not be before normal people are asleep.

Results will be posted before the standings are updated though.

The Invitational standings may take a bit longer to post up this time around, but they'll get done. In the future, it's reasonable to expect the updated standings a week after the event.
