Battleground Games & Hobbies in Plainville MA

Battleground is supremely concerned with keeping our Doubles tournaments fun, casual and appealing to all kinds of players and hobbyists.  With that said, we understand that by definition a tournament is competitive and we do want that as well.  Due to the popularity of these events and the different kind of players they attract, we have altered the prize structure such that a larger percentage of the players involved receive prizes based on their accomplishments.  The awards are listed below.

This event is considerably different than the Doubles events we've run at this location in the past.  It borrows heavily from Adepticon and a lot of the changes / clarifications they've made are in line with the direction we'd like to see Doubles events go.  Please take the time to read through the entire post.

Format: Doubles (2v2) 1000 points per person (no detachments)

RULES FOR WARHAMMER 40K TOURNAMENT

This event will be capped at 30 teams.

Rule Books:
The Warhammer 40,000 SIXTH Edition Rules will be used.

The following is a list of legal army choices:
Codex: Black Templars
Codex: Blood Angels
Codex: Chaos Daemons
Codex: Chaos Space Marines
Codex: Grey Knights
Codex: Dark Angels
Codex: Dark Eldar
Codex: Eldar - NEW BOOK WILL BE ALLOWED
Codex: Imperial Guard

Codex: Space Wolves
Codex: Tau Empire
Codex: Tyranids
Codex: Sisters of Battle (White Dwarf)

MODELS AND POINTS:

1. Each player must bring an army consisting of 1000 points or fewer (975 min), in accordance with these rules. Each team will consist of two players fighting together.

Each player must select one of the following Half Force Org Charts for this event.  Players on a team may not select the same option twice.  In the case of Troops, a team MAY NOT exceed 6 choices between them.

Allied detachments are NOT allowed in this event.

Option #1

• 1 HQ
• 0-1 Elites
• 2-4 Troops
• 0-1 Fast
• 0-1 Heavy
0-1 Fortification
Option #2

• 1 HQ
0-2 Elites
• 2-4 Troops
• 0-1 Fast

• 2-4 Troops
• 0-1 Fast
0-2 Heavy
• 0 Fortifications

Selected units that alter a Team Member’s Force Organization selections WILL affect all other detachments on the Team from the same codex. For example, a Space Marines Master of the Forge allows all detachments using Codex Space Marines to take Dreadnoughts, Venerable Dreadnoughts and Ironclad Dreadnoughts as Heavy Support choices as well as Elites choices.

All instances of Special/Unique/Named Characters must be unique. For example: a Team cannot field Abaddon the Despoiler twice. This also applies to upgrades to squads (e.g., Boss Snikrot, Sergeant Telion, the Changeling).

2. All models must follow “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG). All weapons, war gear, and so forth must be represented on the model unless otherwise approved (see number 3).

3. Pictures of conversions or "counts as" models must be emailed to the Tournament Organizer unless they have previously been approved.

4. Allies of Convenience - For the purposes of this, team members are considered Allies of Convenience per the Warhammer 40,000 rule book with the following modifications:

5. Warlord Traits - Each team will nominate a single Warlord with the following modifications and clarifications:

6. Psychic Powers - At the start of each game, prior to deployment, players may choose to select the psychic powers listed in their Codex as normal OR swap them for a number of rolls on the psychic disciplines tables per the Warhammer 40,000 rule book. Unless stated otherwise, you MAY NOT mix and match Codex and rule book powers.

7. Forge World / Imperial Armour units AND ARMY LISTS bearing the "40k Approved" stamp **ARE** allowed in this Doubles event.

Super Heavies, Super Heavy Flyers, Gargantuan Creatures, Apocalypse Formations, and Strategic Assets are not allowed.

Players MUST have a hard copy of all Forge World / Imperial Armour / Horrus Heresy rules if they wish to field corresponding units / lists.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

8. HQ units that require a certain point level to be fielded do not have to abide by that restriction.

9. We will require that each player submits his army list to a Battleground Tournament Organizer on or before Monday, June 17th (roughly a week before the event). We ask that players email their lists to ChaseLaq@gmail.com as soon as they are finalized. We are going to do our best to check every list before the event begins.

10. If illegal units or other rules violations are found in a player’s army list, at a minimum, the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. In addition, tournament points may be deducted and/or award eligibility may be forfeited. If in doubt, please ask for clarification in advance from a Battleground Tournament Organizer.

11. Restrictions:

       • This event will not use "Mysterious Terrain" (p.102-103).
       • This event will not use "Archotech Artefacts" (p 106).
       • This event will not use "Unique Terrain" (p. 107).
       • This event will not allow The Fortress of Redemption.

The scenarios we will be using for the event will be announced once they near completion.

HOW THE TOURNAMENT WORKS:

• Competitors will participate in three (3) games over the course of the day. In each game, you will play a scenario and record the outcome of the battle on your results sheet. Each round you will play a different opponent.

• Each round will last 2.5 hours. Players will have 15 minutes after the pairings have been posted to deploy their models before time for the round begins.  Players may begin playing as soon as they have finished deployment.

• In the first round, teams will be matched up randomly. After the first round, teams will be matched up according to current rankings in the tournament (based on the number of points they've scored) e.g., the team in first place will play the team in second place and so on. We will try our best not to pair teams that come to the event together or regularly play each other in the first round. If a team receives a BYE they will be awarded max points for all objectives but zero points for everything else.

• You will not play the same team twice.

• We will do our best to prevent a team from playing on the same table twice.

• The pairings for each round will be posted as soon as they are determined. Please be sure to arrive at your table ready to play right away.

• Slow playing will NOT be tolerated.  Players are expected to complete at least 4 rounds.  If you suspect your opponent is slow playing PLEASE notify a Battleground staff member as soon as possible as we can not do anything about alleged slow play after the fact.

• Each game will be played on a 4' x 6' board.

• Players will receive Results Sheets at the beginning of each round. Each results sheet must be filled in properly to ensure that match-ups and point totals are correct. Once Results Sheets are completed they are to be turned in at the counter so the scores can be entered into the computer.

BATTLES:

The SIXTH Edition Rulebook and all FAQs will be in use for all games and will be the definitive guide for all rules. The time limit for each game is 2 hours and 30 minutes. At the end of this time limit, the round will be called; players will need to finish the round as quickly as possible.

What You Need to Bring with You:
-Your (hopefully painted) miniatures
-At least THREE copies of your army list
-Rulebooks and any additional books you need
-Pen and paper
-Dice and templates
-Tape measure
-Something to transport your army from table to table

Store Credit Awards will be given out to:
Store credit is good for any product in the store and all subsequent events. It never expires and will be saved for you.

Best Generals
Second Best Generals
Third Best Generals
Fourth Best Generals (only awarded if the turnout is 26 teams or higher)

Best Appearance - Army (individual)
Second Best Appearance - Army (individual)
Third Best Appearance - Army (individual)

Players Choice - The Players Choice award will go to the team that the others feel best reflects important aspects of the hobby.  Every team will score their opponents on sportsmanship, theme, appearance, and overall awesomeness.  **This award will be significant.**

Smokin' Boots - You got crushed... and you deserve an award for your epic failure.

A team may only win one award. The Best Appearance awards may go to any one player participating in the event, regardless of their finish / other awards.

• A note on the Appearance award - We will award the individual who we feel has the best looking army. We will use a scoring rubric that looks at painting, basing, display boards, and various other "extras" to determine the winner.

Please post any questions or comments here.  I'll do my best to get answers ASAP.

I am a new player and I plan on entering the tournament. What if I can't help but play slow?
also my Overlord has a staff of light when on my list he has a warscythe. I bought him as a resin model so I didn't have the option of a warscythe and I have not been able to get the warscythe bit. It is okay if I proxy the staff of light as a warscthe?

Hey, welcome!
If your partner is more experienced, it should be fine, he/she can help you figure out what to do and warn if time is becoming an issue, etc.

As for the warscythe/staff of light thing... that is pretty much the exact type of thing disallowed by the WYSIWYG policy.  I would just play it as a staff of light until you can obtain a scythe-looking thing of some sort somewhere (shouldn't be hard to do, you could even probably make one yourself as a stopgap).   It's not so much that the model has to have official GW parts for everything (in fact I frequently play armies that have no GW parts at all), it's that the model can't be misleading.  If he has what is obviously a staff of light rather than a warscythe, that's misleading.

Thank you very much for responding! I believe I can find A warscythe bit before the day of the tournament and my partner is quite experienced in the way of play. I can't wait to attend!

If I cut off half of the staff of light wouldn't it resemble a warscythe?

This is a common thing.  Playing slowly as a new player is expected.  "Slow play" as it's being referred to here is "tournament" or "competitive player" jargon for intentionally (or with the expectation of intent) playing slow in an effort to gain advantage.

All players are expected to play the game at a normal or faster than normal pace.

I think you could mod the staff into a warscythe pretty easily, but I wouldnt go chopping up a model for 1 event.  You've found the forums, feel free to ask if someone has an extra, is willing to lend you on, or is willing to lend you a model on tournament day.  Chopping your dude up should probably be a last resort unless you're looking to always play the warscythe.

Cut a extra piece of green plastic to resemble a scythe blade
Glue onto end of staff.
Done
When you are done and want staff back
Snap plastic off

I think all Necron players are always looking to "play the warscythe"... heh.  I would just chop it and mod it and make it look good and scythey (in fact, I DID this to my Lord).  Just keep the staff head in your "bits box" in case when the new Necron codex comes out in 3 years or so, Staffs of light are awesome in 40k 7th edition...

The sky runs red with blood, and the unholy power of the dark gods. The sky rips open spewing forth the plague of Nurgle, and leading it a Soul Grinder with Great Unclean one...
The ground tears with gauss energy, emerald green scars making a fissure through the vast dirt beneath. Necron warriors lead by the Nemesor march out, with the god of gold...

This picture came to me when I figured out my ally was Daemons

One thing that's sort of mind blowing to me is how many people didn't give me their name or their partner's name.  Last names?  Forgetaboutit!!  Seems to be isolated to this event.  Here's hoping I didn't miss any teams that think they're registered.

"Sign up me and my partner please.  Here are our lists."

I've gotta go into detective mode and attempt to figure out who everyone is and hope they respond with any more info.  :)

Hahaha I hadn't noticed that, but seriously does it really matter who is controlling the armies? As long as they're legal and inflicting maximum carnage (pun intended) hahaha  ;D

It changes hour to hour as people email me to register last minute and to drop out.

Between 20 and 24.  I don't have my spreadsheet on my laptop so I'm not 100% sure.

Yeah we're doing it.  I'll bring my tallest model (not a wraithknight).

This wraithknight is vanillla.    Add whatever you want to make your Riptide 240 pts... :)

240 Pts - Tau Empire Roster

Total Roster Cost: 240

Elite: XV104 Riptide (3#, 240 pts)
   1 XV104 Riptide, 190 pts = (base cost 180 + Ion Accelerator 5) + Counterfire Defence System 5
      2 Shielded Missile Drone, 50 pts = 2 * 25

Dude just roll a 6 when wounding and it will be a quick fight.  Oh ya and make sure he fails his save.  Oh ya and also make sure you win the roll to go first.  Or assault him first round and laugh as he dies horribly...

Yes, yes, if rolls a 6, with his feeble two attacks, AND if I fail a save, I am done for.

I have plans, secret plans, that I will not disucss here.

Initially, it was my contention, that the Riptide is a much, much better buy than the wraith Knight, and beats it point for point, not so much that they win in one on one combat.  But, with this current setup, I think the advantage goes to the Tau, mostly because of more shots and better saves.

I would point out it's not necessarily in the WK's favor in CC, as they are both Str 10 (smash) and the riptide might have a 3+ save.  Either way, ranged or CC, a lot will come down to individual die rolls.

I kinda want to talk more riptide vs WK smack, but I don't have much to say.

Maybe the heavy burst cannon (with rending) will be better?

Mathhammer!

OK, so IF I get the nova blast off, 12 shots, 6 hit 1 rend, which is also the only wound.

ION gun, we have 3 shots, 1.5 hit, of which we cause 1/2 wounds, no save.

BUT, we only get rending if the Nova goes off, which only happens 2/3 of the time, 1/3 of the time, we actually cause us ourselves a wound.....hrm.

PLUS, I'm not using that Nova for something else, like 3++, or ripple firing the secondaries.

I think the Ion is still better.

OK, for anyone who cares, Sir Prometheus and I did have the clash of the titans battle, after the last round.

I was up all night with Army Builder for this one, and given my projections for the meta I finally settled on this:

Wraithknight 240

Sir Prometheus's list is posted above.

Here's my battle report:

We played Dawn of War deployment.  The table had a large rock spire in the middle that was actually tall enough to give a Wraithknight a cover save.   I won the roll for first turn and set up dead center as far forward as possible.   The riptide set up on the opposite side, leaving the other side empty, a classic "refused flank".  I knew I was in for a tough battle.

He tried to sieze and failed.

WRAITHKNIGHT TURN 1
I jump forward 12" behind the rock spire, and shoot 2 wraithcannon shots.  1 wound allocated to the front drone who makes his 4+ invul save.

RIPTIDE TURN 1
He moves 6" to the left, shoots everything at the wraithknight, and fails to do a wound (I made a cover save).  Then he scoots another 5-6" towards the corner.

WRAITHKNIGHT TURN 2
I jump the wraithknight out 12" straight towards center of his battle line.  Again shoot 2 wraithcannon shots.  This time I kill a drone.   He passes his morale test (running off the board would have been the most humiliating way to die).

RIPTIDE TURN 2
He moves to the left, Nova charges to give himself a 3+ invul save, and fires.  The wraitknight is no longer in cover and takes a wound (down to 5).  He then scoots over to the left again, but he's out of room to escape and has to start making a run up the short table edge.

WRAITHKNIGHT TURN 3
The riptide is out of room on the left, so I jump over right in front of it.  Fire the wraithcannons, and kill the remaining drone.  He again passes morale.  Then I charge.  His overwatch fails to Wound (t8 is a bitch).   Wraithknight strikes first, with 5 str 10 attacks, hitting on 3's. Riptide has the 3+ invul save and doesn't take a wound, and actually does a wound in return.

RIPTIDE TURN 3
Riptide attempts to Nova charge for the 3+ invul save.   He fails it, taking a wound (down to 4).  I think I heard the pilot say "Ruh roh" over the speaker system.  Combat arrives, the wraithknight does 1 wound to him, and he smashes back for 2 str 10 attacks at the Wraithknight, hitting on 4's, but fails to do a wound.

WRAITHKNIGHT TURN 4
The wraithknight deals 2 wounds to the Riptide in assault, and the riptide does 1 back.  Riptide loses by 1, and fails his morale test this time.  Since the wraithknight outclasses the riptide's initiative by 5, he easily executes the sweeping advance.  Game over.
