Title: 40k Night in Abington
Post by: Chris on September 12, 2013, 04:13:01 PM
With the 40k Campaign in Abington starting to wind down, would people be interested in starting up a gaming night for 40k In Abington?  I would hope we could get a night with similar turn out to Plainville, and have a night people would be able to drop in and either play a pickup game or two, or possibly have a chance to learn the game.

With the current schedule in Abington and not to conflict with Plainville, I think Tuesday or Wednesday night would be a good choice.  Who would be interested in this?  What people would be willing to show up for a few weeks in a row to get it started?

I'd be down, there's a good group of folks, and I've definitely enjoyed playing many of them during the campaign.  My preference would be Tuesday or Wednesday as well.  Obviously, this is going to be next to impossible to schedule equitably, as everybody has conflicts all the time.  That said, I say pick a day, and let's see how it goes...

I approve this message.  I approve it as much as it can possibly be approved.

If it counts for anything, Tuesday is probably a better bet.  Abington has 20+ Magic players for a tournament every Wednesday and EVENTUALLY will start running D&D Encounters.

Nothing much goes on there on Tuesdays.

thats the whole point of a casual night, for people of all skill levels and to bring new players into the hobby.

As for start time the one in plainville has people showing up usually around 6 or 7 but theres always others getting there before that as well

Steve, Andrew, I'm sorry to hear that you won't be able to make it.  Unfortunately, regardless of the night we pick, someone isn't going to be able to make it.  If we find that nobody comes over the course of a few weeks, then perhaps a change of day is in order.  For now, we should go with Tuesday simply because we said we were going with Tuesdays.  I feel your pain though, I wasn't able to do ANY 40k for about 2 months because of work, and that sucked.  I just did what I could to make things happen, and now I'm more available.

Everyone else:  See you tonight.

How was the attendance for the first week?  Things start slow but I think one of the best things Ben did / does for the Plainville thread is recap what games were played.

Brad and I were the only one to play.  It was close game of Grey Knights vs. Lementers with him winning.  Murph was there painting, and Tom Callahan and Steve Riley were there earlier in the night, but had to leave.

So, 40k night (as far as I know, I left early) was a bust last night.  There were 3 people, and no games.  Also, only 1 table, so the possibility of more than 1 game wasn't even there.   :(

It only takes a few minutes to put tables together and they are all in the storage room, so that definitely wouldn't have been an issue.

Also, one or two people came in after you left at 6 PM, but nobody was there at the same time.

I was planning on going but no one confirmed a game with me. Also no one clarified on how to resolve the 1 table issue.
Title: Re: 40k Night in Abington
Post by: Chase on September 25, 2013, 04:32:16 PM
The one table thing is a simple fix.  Abington has wooden frames that fit over the card / board game tables to make it easy to expand / contract based on what's going on in the store at a given time.

The 1 table was just left over from this weekend's Prerelease.  I'm sure that by Thursday night (when the WM/H dudes get together there) that there will be a bunch of tables set up and ready to go.

Getting Tuesday 40k is happen in Abington just requires some persistence.  Don't give up.  Keep coming.  If you're unsure of whether or not to stop by or you're running late, just give a call.

It seems like there's a decent amount of interest, which is great.

Post by: Ian Mulligan on September 25, 2013, 05:15:34 PM
While it is easy to get the tables put up if they aren't, it is infinitely nicer to have them up when the extra space isn't required for an event. Aside from being much more convenient, it makes for a more inviting atmosphere. I would certainly feel less welcome on WM days if the tables were down.

In the event of table shortage...

Play Doubles. Ask a BG employee to set up more tables.

And persistence pays off. Back in the day, there were many nights Plainville had only one table running. If you make the evening good enough, people will make time for the evening.

Yeah, I know.  Plugging and chugging, as it were.  Not really worried about the single table thing, just the whole night was frustrating.

It may be a silly question, but is Tuesday really the best night?

What about Monday or Saturday?

Title: Re: 40k Night in Abington
Post by: Loranus on September 26, 2013, 12:30:55 AM
Saturday is like a free gaming day I think at both stores and when you have an event of any kind you lose a lot of space to play on Saturday. Monday looking at the Abington Google Calendar has nothing going on that day.

I feel people should try to schedule matches on a day they are free. Aim for Tuesday and Monday and hopefully you can all start playing on the same day. If it wasn't for Gas and Time Constraints I would Grace Abington with my Hat a big part of the Success of Plainville's 40k Scene.

I'm not against changing the day, but I will echo Ben's point about consistency being key.  No day is going to be convenient for everybody, so, IMO, we just need to pick a day, stick with it, and make it an event worth prioritizing.

PRO TIP: New players are lifeblood of any gaming community. If you see a new guy, say hi, play a small game with him, explain the rules as they come up and try to remember his name.

I think for the store Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are the best options.  I have a feeling Monday will not work well for a lot of people.

Please post what day works for you if you would plan on coming to a weekly 40k night.

I appreciate what you're doing Chris, I want 40k night at Abington to be successful as well.  The problem with simply asking what night works for everyone is that no night works for everyone.  I've talked a lot with Chase, Sam, and Ben (Boulanger) about how Thursday night 40k got off the ground.  Basically, to get people to show up to a 40k night, you have to have people at the 40k night.  Thursday night wasn't picked because it was an especially convenient day for everyone, but now that it's so successful, it's something that's worth prioritizing over other things for that community.

As silly as it sounds, if you build it (in the sense of getting multiple players to routinely show up for MONTHS on end, at a defined time and place) they will come.  Honestly, I'm not the right person to get this off the ground.  I don't know a ton of people very well at Abington.  If you do, email a bunch of people, and say "HEY!  COME TO ABINGTON ON NIGHT XYZ!".  Then, put up a forum post saying HOLY CRAP 10 PEOPLE ARE COMING!  YOU COME TOO!  HAVE FUNTIMES WITH PLASTIC DUDESMANS!
Title: Re: 40k Night in Abington

People have to commit and not give up just because of one bad Thursday as well.

As Brad is well aware sometimes at Thursday 40k we might only have 2 tables going, other times we've got 8.

Don't show up to one where not much is going on and never show up again judging off that one night

If we're looking at Mon - Thur, then the way things are going a Wednesday would work best for me, when I'm not travelling.

I usually try and get a game in on the weekend too but, for a 40k night my vote is pretty much restricted to Weds....

"Hump Day"
Cheers,
