MODELS AND POINTS:

1. Players will bring two lists, an Attacker list and a Defender list. Each list may not exceed 1000 points and must adhere to the normal Force Organization with the following modifications.  Players must us the same codex combination for both lists. If your Attacker list is Blood Angels with Necron allies, your Defender list be Blood Angels with Necron allies.

2. Attacker lists are limited to 0-1 Heavy Support choices. Attacker lists may not choose a Fortification.

3. Defender lists are limited to 0-1 Fast Attack choices. Defenders may choose 0-1 Fortification choices.

(A player may use the exact same list for Attacker and Defender, so long as the list is legal under both restrictions of the modified FOC.)

4. All models must follow “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG). All weapons, war gear, and so forth must be represented on the model.  All models must be fully assembled.

5. Pictures of conversions or "counts as" models must be emailed to Chase unless they have previously been approved. Forge World models are allowed where appropriate. This event will not be using Forge World rules or allow Forge World units.

6. Warlord Traits - (If you have an HQ) At the start of each game, before deployment, select two tables.  Roll a die for each table.  Choose ONE of the two results as your Warlord Trait for that game.

7.  Psychic Powers - At the start of each game, prior to deployment, players may choose to select the psychic powers listed in their Codex as normal OR swap them for a number of rolls on the psychic disciplines tables per the Warhammer 40,000 rule book. Unless stated otherwise, you MAY NOT mix and match Codex and rule book powers.

8. We will require that each participant submits an itemized army list to a Battleground Tournament Organizer on or before Monday, February 17th (roughly a week before the event).  An Army Builder .pdf is preferred but a detailed, itemized text file (.txt) is acceptable.  PLEASE include the number of points each upgrade and unit costs on your list.

Please email lists to ChaseLaq@gmail.com as soon as they are finalized.

9. If illegal units or other rules violations are found in a player’s army list, at a minimum, the models in violation will be removed from all subsequent play. In addition, tournament points may be deducted and/or award eligibility may be forfeited. If in doubt, please ask for clarification in advance from a Battleground Tournament Organizer.

10. Restrictions:
This event will not use the Seize the Initiative rule. Attackers will go first in every scenario.
This event will not use "Archotech Artefacts" (p 106).
This event will not use "Unique Terrain" (p. 107).
This event will not allow The Fortress of Redemption.

HOW THE TOURNAMENT WORKS:

• Competitors will participate in three (3) rounds over the course of the event. In each round, players will play against another player in each scenario twice, once in the role of Attacker and once in the role of Defender. Players record the outcome of the battle on his mission sheet. Each game is of random length per the Warhammer rulebook (5-7 turns).

The first game will have a 60 minute time-limit. Players are encouraged to start the second game if they finish the first game before the time-limit. The second game will be stopped at the 125 minute mark, concluding the round.

Each GAME will be scored according to a simple design.
Win: 9 points
Draw: 4
Loss: 0
Secondary Objective: 3
Slay the Warlord: 2

Each game is designed with various mission objectives to produce points. If one player's entire army is wiped out, the game ends immediately and points are scored immediately. Likewise, if at the end of any game turn, one player has no models on the battlefield, his opponent automatically wins. The player with the most points after all three (3) rounds will be declared Best General. Overall standings tie-breakers will be based on Strength of Schedule.

• The event is designed for every player to play every round. If a player receives a BYE, they will be awarded a win with average points for the round.

• We will do our best to prevent a player from playing either the same player or on the same table twice.

• The pairings for each round will be announced as soon as they are determined. Please be sure to arrive at your table ready to play right away.

• Slow playing will NOT be tolerated. Players are expected to complete at least 4 rounds in each game. If you suspect your opponent is slow playing PLEASE notify a Battleground staff member as soon as possible as we can not do anything about alleged slow play after the fact.

• Each game will be played on a 6' x 4' board.

• Players will receive Results Sheets at the beginning of each round. Each results sheet must be filled in properly to ensure that match-ups and point totals are correct. Once Results Sheets are completed they are to be turned in at the counter so the scores can be entered into the computer.

BATTLES:

The SIXTH Edition Rulebook and FAQ will be in use for all games and will be the definitive guide for all rules. The time limit for each game is as follows: Each round will last 125 minutes. The first game must end after 60 minutes. At the end of this time limit, the game will be called; players will need to finish the round as quickly as possible.

What You Need to Bring with You:

-At least TWO copies of your army list and all relevant rules including FAQ/Errata
-Rulebooks are required as are any additional additional rules you need
-Pen and paper
-Dice and templates

Yeah, this sounds fun.

Are we allowing supplements?  (many of which, all, maybe, are physical now, but were originally digital) I'm fine either way.

Other people may be able to see better, whether it is possible for an overall draw. I always assume it's possible. What would BG and players prefer? Split prizes? Tie-break by strength of schedule? Some other resolution?

Always planning for the worst case scenario. :D

Do the attacker and defender lists have to be from the same codex? I might go to this depending on my schedule. Its a shame the digital stuff can't br used because Zhadsnark da Rippa backed up by Warkoptas might do very well at this type of event.

Yup!  The scenarios are probably going to look something like this:

**The following is not styled to be a "competitive" event.**

This is an event based on the old Attacker-Defender scenarios.

Mission 1

Primary: Purge the Alien
Secondary: Linebreaker

Mission 2

Defender places all 3 Objectives in their deployment zone, per normal rules (6" from table edge, 12" from each other).

Primary: Destroy 2 out of 3 Objectives (by having an Attacker infantry model in base contact with marker for one game turn).
Secondary: Destroy all 3 Objectives

Mission 3

Relic placed in the center of the board. The Defender may start the game with the Relic held by any model for which it would be legal.

Primary: Hold the Relic at game end.
Secondary: Relic location at game end. If the Relic is in Defender deployment zone, even if held by an Attacker model, the Secondary is awarded to the Defender. If the Relic is outside the deployment zone, the Attacker is awarded Secondary.

From a fluff perspective, I can see why you'd hope that. But from a rules perspective, I'm not sure why it needs to be the same. I personally think it would be cheesy to switch Chapters, but within the above constriction. I feel like it's getting into the rules of a specific book, in which I'm not overly interested. In other words, I don't want to tell people how to use their codex. If your codex allows you the choice of Chapter/Chaos god/fluff, then I'm okay with that.

I will be skipping this one, low points limits what codexes are effective and not allowing digital supplements while allowing hard copy is in my opinion silly.  No Sentinels of Terra  or Clan Raukaan just because GW hasn't printed a book yet?  I could go on about the rules restrictions being imposed and I seem to be in the minority so I will just again skip, and spend the tournament money I budget in on a dinner out with the Girlfriend.  Good luck and have fun to all playing

"So in the 3rd Edition book, there's an interesting twist to that setup.

Defender units falling back actually fall toward the center of the board and automatically regroup upon reaching the center! Such is the time of desperation. It's really wild.

Also, Defender Reserves would come on from the center of the board, as if they're being dropped in, emerging from underground, etc."

In other words, we have to make sure Sam announces this before the start of the third round.

And Flyers:
"Yes, they'd come on from the center of the board, and yes, they'd re-enter from the center. (Picture the planes doing loop-de-loops!)"
Title: Re: [Plainville MA] 1000pt Attacker / Defender Event - 2/22
Post by: Benjamin on February 17, 2014, 10:08:31 PM
The second mission needs a rules clarification, because it was seemingly ambiguous. I'd like it to now read:

"An objective is destroyed at the beginning of Attacker's player turn if the Attacker has an Infantry model in base contact with the objective."

So the idea is for the Defender to have a chance to react and protect the objective.

If the Attacker is able to move in the Assault Phase (whether by consolidation or Jet Pack), the Defender should take care!

Also, note: INFANTRY model. This has not changed from the original wording.

When you say Infantry model its any type of Infantry or specifically just Infantry?
Title: Re: [Plainville MA] 1000pt Attacker / Defender Event - 2/22
Post by: Benjamin on February 18, 2014, 08:08:43 AM
Page 44 BRB, Infantry.

Notes:

Jump and Jet Pack (p 47) are not specific classifications of a model type, so Jump Infantry and Jet Pack Infantry still count as Infantry.

Artillery crews are typically Infantry models. (I couldn't think of an example for which this wasn't true.)

There were a number of units I considered when constructing the rule (Flying MCs, Vehicles, Walkers). I simply thought it was easiest and was still relatively in line with the Troops-theme that pervades most missions.

If an all-bike list has to take a Land Speeder of outflanking Scouts to try and win the mission, I'm not saying that's a bad plan...

Do remember. Attackers can start 24" away from deployment and are guaranteed to go first. It should be a bloody good time!

For the second mission, because of the triangular shape of the Attacker deployment zone. the attackers can deploy just about at the center of the table, while the Defenders are 12" from their short board edge.

It's the same distance across as all the traditional long-edge deployments, but it's so much more claustrophobic when you're Defending on the short edge.

Mission 3, Defender Outflankers enter the board as usual, not from the center.

That's a normal first thought of the day, isn't it?

Great event, I really enjoyed the speed with which we could get through a game! Also some awesome paintjobs and conversions by you guys, and a very nice assortment of terrain (just enough to be important in maneuver/placement of units and objectives). Also was nice to play new missions rather than the same book missions. All together, well worth the time and money! Pleasure to meet you all today as well, look me up if you're ever down in Providence, RI. I've got a table and usually have evenings free for a game.

For attacker list, I brought Mordrak and Full Ghost Knights (DS first turn, no scatter, stealth< mordrak is a slightly suped up Grand Master but not an IC), 5 GKT with Thawn leading them (thawn gets back up like old celestine), and a full unit of GKSS w/hammer and the psybolts in a rhino.

Defenders I brought a full GKSS again, but no rhino or hammer, Coteaz, 2 min acolyte squads in razorbacks, 2 jokaero iwth acolytes to sit in the bastion, a lone inquisitor to run the gun, and Thawn's unit again. Bastion with quad gun.

Mordrak historically has been huge fail, but he was a little more dominant at 1000 pts than I expected.  Thawn was hit or miss as per usual, sometimes he keeps on getting up and is annoying as hell, sometimes he dies and just takes a nap the whole game.

i brought shooty bugs for defense (dakka flyrant, zoanthrope, 30 gants, tervigon, exocrine, 3 biovores, aegis with quadgun). i wanted to have 2 venomthropes instead of the zoanthrope and quadgun, but my models didn't show up in time.

for attack i brought three fmcs (2x dakka flyrant and crone) and the standard 30 gants + tervigon core. the leftover points went into a single biovore.

the list performed as expected, only losing to grey knights (force weapons hurt) while attacking and drop pod marines defending when my flyrant failed 4/4 saves and died top of 1.

I brought IG with DA allies (I know, crazy at 1k points but I just finished painting up my DW and wanted to run them).

For attacker, I brought 3 chimaeras (filled with CCS, vets, all with special weapons) and a hellhound on the IG side. DA contributed a librarian + tac squad in a drop pod w/ locator beacon as well as 5 DW terminators (2 with TH/SS).

On defense, I had a full DA tac squad with plasma gun and plasma cannon as well as the librarian, then 2 chimaeras for CCS and one Vet squad as well as a platoon of IG rocking flamers/autocannons. Also an ADL with autocannon.

First game I had was against the nids. IG shooting didn't do much to them, and they cracked the transports and consumed my precious biomass. The DA did manage to come down, pop the zoanthrope, and then get stuck in assault with gaunts. Game ended as my terminators were merrily slaughtering the gaunts in his backfield, but everyone else was dead at that point. On defense, his flying monstrous creatures just had a field day and I never really accomplished much of anything.

Second game was vs. space sharks and was very competitive to the end as both attacker and defender. A biker chapter master is not something to be trifled with apparently!

Final game was against White Scars bikers (attack list) and then an Iron Hands defense list. Again, very good back and forth. His bikes were in my face turn 1, but I managed to whittle them down with flamers and lots of FRFSRF from my IG. With my attacker list, I managed to chew right through his Iron Hands, getting some very good results with my shooting. Was the first time playing against centurions as well as grav guns, not a fan of grav vs. vehicles!

All in all, very enjoyable! It was amazing to find that you could get 6 games of 40k into ~8 hours of playtime.

First Round. Played Sam and his Space Marine / DA allies list. First game, two Librarians gave Centurions 4+ invulnerable and Prescience. That is legitimate business, especially in a Kill Point game. Second game, stared down White Scars. Did better than we both thought I would, but still not good enough. Again, an excellent list for Sam in a Kill Points game.

Second Round. Played Chris and his IG/Dark Angels. First match. My Chapter Master drove across the board, soaking up fire enough for a Rhino to get to the line. Again, just short on time. Darn. Second match. Played my butt off to hold off 6 Chimera hulls rolling toward the objectives. Drop Pod full of Terminators sure got my attention, too.

Third Round. Played Pat's Hat and his Space Marines. In both games, my Chapter Master rolled a 6 on Personal Warlord Traits, making him a Scoring unit. So in both games, my Chapter Master punched a lot of dudes while rolling around with the Relic.

In summary, Chapter Master on a bike is awesome fun. HEROHAMMER.

I finished 5th overall, just a couple points out of 3rd. I finished as the top Space Marines player of the day, which I was happy with given literally half of the field played Space Marines.

I'll write up my thoughts on the event itself at a later time. Overall, players seemed generally positive. I aim to improve the missions, make them even better, because I know it's possible. But the format itself seemed excellent. Players were exhausted afterward, as if they had actually played two hours more than they had. Very quick pace!
