Hi all,
I've been doing some thinking based on conversations on the forums and in person regarding the perceived balance or imbalance of 40k, the notion of creating supplemental rulesets to balance the game, and a more casual playstyle being enjoyed by some fraction of our community.
In that vein, I would like to propose an event based on the NOVA Narrative rules/missions from last year, with the addition of the recently published (in beta) supplements for each codex. I think this has the potential to be very fun, offering every player some "new hotness" for their codex, regardless of age. Additionally, I believe that explicitly orienting this sort of thing toward a casual crowd would allow for many players that are excited about events but put off by the competitive aspects of tournaments to participate more actively in the community.
What I would like to know is whether folks in the community are interested in an event like this. I'm also curious how people would feel about requiring some sort of narrative addendum (painting, model, story, whatever) to accompany each army list, to "get people in the mood" so to speak.
The narrative supplements are available here: http://www.novaopen.com/wp-content/uploads/Narrative-Supplements-31Jan14.pdf (http://www.novaopen.com/wp-content/uploads/Narrative-Supplements-31Jan14.pdf). Keep in mind that these are in beta. Also note that Imperial Guard and Orks are missing supplements, as they are likely to get an update before the NOVA (which these are written for). This issue would be rectified for our purposes.
I have the narrative guide, but no way of sharing it at the moment. If you're interested in it, pm me with an email address.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

According to Brandt, he is aware of several game stores that have already adopted these supplements as a standard part of the ruleset of their events.

I just spoke to Mike Brandt about the supplements being used. Apparently it is the case that folks are using the supplements, but none as yet have used them in an event.

You are awesome and I want to play in this.
Thank you for reading my mind.

Thanks John, glad to hear it!

I'd be very interested in playing such an event and already have a prepared narrative for my IG regiment.

When mentioned in certain circles, this idea has positive traction.

Lets do eeeeeeeeeeeeet

Hells yes

This would be worth taking the day off of work. Will the narrative events be an annual event, bi-annual, how often?
-
To do it right I would say do it Quarterly.

I wouldnt mind a go at it

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, and agree that an event like this certainly has the potential to be a great recurring event, I'm going to focus on getting it to happen once :). That said, if things go well, it's certainly a formula that can be built on.
I'm glad to hear that there is pretty significant enthusiasm for this idea. Assuming I don't get snowed into submission (which, given the drive, and the fact that I don't *especially* want to sleep at BG, may very well happen) I do plan on talking to Chase tomorrow evening.

An excellent plan.
