Title: Answers about GW from GW Employee
Post by: The_Chef on March 12, 2014, 05:38:49 AM
So I know the link will scare some of you off. Its someone who is getting Downsized from GW answering questions about the company. From what I've read I dont think GW will be around by the time I have a kid.

EDIT: ARCHIVED LINK FOUND

It's not in Google's cache :(  ALthough the search result for that url still contains a sentence or two of an excerpt from it

I didn't get to read anything but I don't know if I'd buy it anyway. I don't think they would be churning things out at the rate they are if they were in any kind of noteworthy financial trouble.

Probably not financial trouble, I mean they're still the most profitable wargaming company. However, the fact that this was dropped off the net so quickly might give the source legitimacy.

I absolutely think GW is going to be in serious financial trouble within a few years if not sooner.   They seem to be in full court press mode now,  promoting maximum opportunity for short term sales at the expense of things that might help them even in the medium term (for an extreme example, they didn't take an extra day to make sure that their most recent codex is capable of surviving turn 1 before putting the $41 book up for sale).

But, looking farther out than that, since GW completely pulled out of being involved in the actual running of their games, they now have no way to stop the digital printing revolution from invalidating their entire business.  Once people can 3d-print their own terminators, GW gets hit right in the junk.  In comparison, Privateer press requires usage of official models at their events, and they have a business relationship with basically everyone that runs a tournament for them, so this is capable of being enforced.

Additionally, Privateer Press has the respect of their community. That goes pretty far to making sure people keep buying models. They are also in the "rules business", so there's no real incentive to shift to a community-generated ruleset.

Oh, and it may not be a big deal, but PP has nothing to do with any of my events :P 100% community based!

Affordable 3d printers are not very far off.

Still need to get the 3d print files.

That's what 3d scanners are for :)

All you have to do is Google for them.

3d printers, especially home-owned models are quite a way off in terms of quality and won't be there for a while.

Yeah... probably still a few years before you can get one that prints wargaming models to a "meh" level for less than $300

Exactly, GW is safe from this for at least half a decade.

"If" mass 3D piracy occurs, do you really think only GW will be targeted? Somehow PP will be protected in some holy aura lol.. keep dreaming.

Well, it's a good thing China isn't in the picture.

Oh, wait.

Oh, wait.

I think SpaceX is the only company in the US that intentionally doesn't Patten any designs for that very reason.

I've read through a bunch of this but I'm not sure there's a whole lot here we didn't know before.

I wonder what the incentive is for this guy to do this.  It doesn't really seem like he's sticking it to anyone.

This was kind of a yawnfest to be honest.

I didn't finish, is there anything really juicy in 2nd half?
