Title: Painting Competition Results!
Post by: Battleground on July 15, 2010, 05:35:25 PM
The results of the June 2010 Painting Competition are in!

First off, I'd like to thank all those who participated in this event. It's a difficult and brave thing to submit your artistic work to the scrutiny of your peers, let alone a panel of judges, and everyone put forth a great effort!

Secondly, I'd like to thank the two judges who assisted me in this tough decision They were able to point out the subtle nuances that separate the models that are very difficult for the untrained eye to identify. Judges Sue R. and Seb J. are both VERY experienced painters, probably two of the best that I personally know, and thankfully their careful eyes were able to make the hard choice of picking the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place models a lot easier.

The top three models are:

1st Place ($65 store credit)
David Haber-Mattie's Warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka

2nd Place ($40 store credit)
Matt Susalka's Wolf Guard Halfdan the Black

3rd Place ($25 store credit)
Paul Gaughran's Black Templar High Marshall Helbrecht

All entrants did a great job and we hope that you'll shoot for the top spot again in one of our future painting competitions.

All of the submissions are available for permanent viewing in our website art gallery, as well as at the store for a limited time. You can see them all here:

http://www.battlegroundgames.com/community_artgallery_jun2010.html

Upon request, models not in the top three can have an e-mailed list of suggestions on what types of techniques you should focus on to achieve a higher placement in future competitions. These lists were put together by the judges and were used to influence their opinion on which models were picked for the top three.

Model submissions may be picked up from the store at your discretion, but we'd like to display them all for at least another week if you have no immediate need to take it back.

Thanks again everyone!

I came down to the store yesterday and saw how completely outclassed I was in this comp. I'd love to get the list of what I need to work on sent. You can send it here, or on facebook.
thanks!

The non metallic metal tech you used was working pretty well! I'm going to work on that next I think. I tried a small bit and it didn't come out that good.

my personal favorites were the doombull and avatar, but very good job to all! i think next time there should be a 40k and fantasy seperate competition, that would be nice to see. also, matt i think won 2nd because he did a lightning effect on all of his claw blades thats pretty difficult to do.

btw, where is everyone getting these cool terrain and rocky bases? i want them!

For some, such as Matt's model, I believe the base is actually put out by GW.  They make a basing kit, and he took a large round piece from the kit and glued it to a base.  That's what it looks like to me, I've done that before.

Others are pretty creative.  The rock's on Paul's model (on the base, I mean  ;D) are ceiling tile.

could the top 3 get some feedback please? I'd appreciate some myself (placed second) and what I can try to do for next time to do better based on this comp. Thanks in advance

I was hoping we could do something like this as well. I love the idea of everyone presenting their best models, because we can really see the community's talent on display.
