1) I read in another thread that a character must be made using the essential rules? I've been getting mixed messages (or mixing up the messages myself) that a regular 4e character would be fine.
2) We should have an official Encounters thread. No question about it.

The character creation rules for each season differ. That's definitely the reason you're getting confused.
I haven't spent time looking around for the upcoming season's character creation guidelines, but they should be out there by now.

From what I understand, you have to create a character using essentials.

From the Season 5: Dark Legacy of Evard packet...
"Players can use the Heroes of the Fallen Lands, Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms, the new (for this season only) Player's Option: Heroes of Shadow, or any article content in Dragon magazine that supports these products to make a character."

Wow. Still confused. I'll just force Sam to stat my character. :D

With Sam around, there's no real need to think about anything related to D&D.

You have to use essentials books and rules only, unless, of course bg has a house rule.

Will ther be anyone around for encounters in Abingon tonight? I'm probably going to be there to play.

I really dislike the "you have to use this material" approach behind encounters since season 2.
I understand their reasons, but I would never turn away a deva invoker, shifter warden or dragonborn psion just because the material says "new style format only" or "Dark Sun rules only".*
By the way, all of the races are in the new format since an issue or two ago of Dragon. It's only the classes that aren't nowadays.
*Essentials was 10 products. The format introduced in essentials has been maintained in every product since because it's awesome, but it's not Essentials.
