Sure. OK then, glad to hear there's a decent turnout on Tuesdays. I was curious because I've been trying to decide between 40k and Fantasy. Perhaps I'll be challenging a few of you in the near future.
EDIT: Facebook still sucks but, maybe checking out the news for Battleground every once in a while couldn't hurt, could it? *gulp*

So I've noticed!
Most of the people that normally show up on Tuesdays don't look at the BG forum, so we'll probably have a larger amount of people there than the thread actually implies.
I think 4 people that were there yesterday don't check the forums really.

I think Brother_Maynard played Demons last night against Warriors of Chaos. Bloodletters seem kind of crazy... as do Flamers.
There was some pretty awesome Great Unclean One on Hellcannon action though, that was fun.

well lets do it. i will be showing up with 2.5k of daemons and/or beastmen, and i might bring a buddy with TK or rats as well. i've got a mind to put an end to Mark's vampires' reign of terror, they've been on a rampage for weeks now. although i wouldn't mind a game vs JakeM's ogres either.

well bloodletters and flamers are both pretty nasty if you're not familiar with them (which Mike wasn't lol, sorry buddy). that hellcannon shouldn't have lasted that long either, big papa should've pasted it first tound. pics look sweet though!

Fantasy is a lot of fun, most 40k players are intimated by it at first but they quickly find out that it is very easy to learn, especially if they already know how to play 40k. Plus fantasy setting is a pretty fun theme by itself!

The power level for deamons for fantasy vs 40k is almost the exact opposite. Should you decide to switch over, your deamons will make you very proud lol.

Yea those were my Warriors of Chaos, it was my first time playing against Daemons so it was a bit of a learning curve. Flamers weren't that bad (all my warriors had the Mark of Nurgle) but it was the Bloodletters that I SEVERELY underestimated lol. Also didn't know Great Unclean one had cannonballs for fists haha. Good game though

Indeed, however Warriors of Chaos can never truely be beaten.. they just go back to the Northern Wastes to regroup lol

I'm looking forward to hopefully unleashing the rat horde next week... lots of clawing, biting, lightning, fire, poison gas, and mayhem!
And that's just what my army will do to itself, think of what it could do to an opponent! ;D

Yeah, the reason I'm gravitating toward Fantasy is because the setting is really cool. I've always been a fan of medieval fantasy especially when cannons and muskets are involved.

Well, if the turnout next week is all the people that showed up last week as well as those that have said here that they want to go, it could be a pretty decent evening for Fantasy gaming!
I know that I'm planning on being there, so someone can beat up on a Skaven army! (even if I'm a new player, go for it, take out your hatred of the rats!)

Good to see more players eager to give Fantasy a try, I will also be there next Tuesday and will be happy to teach new players the basics. I understand that most people that first learn fantasy already know how to play 40k, so here are two very broad bits of info differentiating the game systems ..
1) Unlike 40k, where 50% of the player base are Space Marines and 50% is "everything else", Fantasy has no dominate race.. everytime you play against someone you literally have no idea what army your facing. Almost all the armies are great fun and play very differently from each other.
2) Fantasy is divided in 4 phases instead of 3 like 40k.
-Movement
-Magic
-Shooting
-Assault
Unlike 40k psychic powers, magic plays a MUCH LARGER role (thus getting its own phase)
So I will leave that for the new guys to think about (and hopefully after reading this you didn't go mad and start having laughing/screaming fits lol).. Welcome to Warhammer Fantasy; come back with your shield.. or on it!! ;D

Yeah, I bought the rulebook the day before yesterday and I'm picking up on the basics. I think I'll actually be there this Tuesday to see the rules in action.

Anyone have any thoughts on a point value that would be good for a first game?
I've currently built up a 1500 point army list, but I don't know if that's really a viable game / one that people would actually play.
I'm looking at trying to play a game on Tuesday night, so if anyone has recommended point values / suggestions / is up for a game, let me know!

Well if you only have 1500 pts then its a good beginner game so don't worry about it too much. Most games are around 2500 but mostly due to characters. Unlike 40k HQs, in fantasy Lords and Heros play a much larger role and most players put 25% of their army points into them. If you have 1500pts worth of infantry then you can easily spend another 500 points on 1-2 characters.

Oh, I think the most I could field is about 3000 points, I just wasn't sure what a good "starter" point value would be.
I'd just need to build trays for my various units, but I think I could get around 3000. I'll work on a list for 2500 and 3000, just in case.
EDIT: I can do 2500, can't do 3000 until I get a few more models in the next order.

If you have never played before I would say play small games. You will learn more of you play a few 1000 point games and they are a lot faster.

personally i prefer the smaller games, you get more games in, and i feel you are able to make a much more varied list each time

1000 or 1500 is a good place to start. once you get into higher points games there will be a lot of more obscure rules coming into play that will only make it harder to keep track of whats going on. you seem to have a good grasp of the rules but there's no sense in overloading yourself. plus like Hankin said, skaven are pretty tough in small games.

Alright then, I'll work up a few lists for various values to get things going. Probably a 1000, 1500, and 2500 to start out.
Whatever people feel like playing, at least I'll have something for it. :)

So I kind of botched and sent myself only 1000, 2000, and 2500 point lists... stupidly sent myself my 1500 point Tyranid list instead of my Skaven one, whoops.
I'll be there tonight if anyone feels like teaching or playing against a new player.

We are going to be running a WHFB tournament on Jan 22nd (a Sunday). I don't have the details hammered out yet, but figured I'd give the heads up.

Yep, nine people were there, eight playing. I kind of just walked around and watched / checked rules randomly.
I think there was a 2v2 match of Tomb King and Chaos Warriors against High Elves and Orcs/Goblins... a Chaos Warriors against Ogres game... and a Beastmen against Tomb Kings game as well.
Seemed like everyone was having a good time, lots of death all around... the way the games should be! ;)

I think the game last night went pretty well!
Orcs and Skaven vs. Tomb Kings and Lizardmen
It was kind of like rock paper scissors... except Orcs smash Lizardmen, and Tomb Kings murder Skaven.
I think the game came out to a draw, and it was a lot of fun! Many deaths all around! :)

Yeah, I got a bit of painting done (some orcs and half an Arachnarok spider) but the sound of rolling dice was to irresistible, so I abandoned my green skins to check out your battle and get strangled by an evil sweater. Who won by the way?

he thrashed me, won by 700 vp's or so. just need time to get used to the new book, i was a bit shell shocked by the efficiency of their new magic phase (even though they lost a lot of the spam stupidity and their more broken items/powers). learned a lot though, you always learn much more from losing than winning, so i'm looking forward to playing them again.

what was some of the lessons learned. i haven't played the new VC yet

its really important to force them to charge you, as then they have to fight 2 rounds of combat before they can raise troops again. the new bubble versions of van hels, invo, and vigor are really nasty, van hels is 12+ to cast on the bigger version and needs to be stopped at all costs. the black periapt is really good, level 4 necromancers are really difficult to handle in general. they're cheap enough to have a dedicated level 4 caster and a combat vampire lord (who can be much tougher than the old book, holy crap this guy was mean). lore attribute makes it really tough to kill their characters if they stay around the necro so the bunker has to go down ASAP. i was using my daemons so his spirit hosts weren't that bad but they are going to be a real problem for other armies (my beastmen or ogres for example). raise dead is an extremely good spell, they can raise a re director anywhere within 18" and grow it really big in a phase or 2.

Yeah, I noticed the bubble spells, including invocation of nehek almost force your army to stay tightly knit around the casters to get the full effect of your magic and essentially your army. I think the days of primarily Magic casting vampires is over. Its to expensiveto make them effective and draws away from there combat potential. I think they are there to supplement the magic phase with base 6+ invoations to effect their direct area and add channeling opportunities. Necormancers and Master Necromancer will take the magic role being that they are exactly the same as empire wizards in cost and stature.
Crypt horrors, which i am working on now, should be an interesting addition. being monstrous infantry with t5, 5+ regen, stomp and being able to regain d6 + wizards level in wounds back should be an interesting element. should play simlar to a ranked unit of poisoned chaos spawns thats can be ressurected.
I am a grave gaurd glutton, so the fact thath they lost magical attacks, but dropped a point is ok in my book. I didnt realized the potential of invocation with a level 4 until it went off and all units within 12' regaind d6+4 wounds back. Grave gaurd included! Then my lord cast the smaller version and all units within 6' gained an additional d6+1. . .. I think that brought back 11- 13 ghouls back and swung that combat

I'll be there this Tuesday. I haven't played yet, though I have played 40k a handful of times, so I'm relatively familiar with how the game works. I'll have about 1000 points, I'm shooting to get another 500 points built but that probably won't happen. Orcs & Goblins if you're interested.

Nah, the other set of triple 1s were for the Razordons not fleeing from the Daemonettes and the Seekers. :) And I only had one group of Clanrats and one of Plague Monks on the Saurus... the Stormvermin decided to jump the Ogres and held... for a while. ::)
I don't think I've ever heard a table erupt so loud with yelling since I've been playing as when you rolled triple 1s for the what... 13 Skinks that were getting mauled by Daemonettes and Rat Ogres? That was unreal.
However... don't forget about some of the other fantastic / hilarious parts...
Gnoblars killing off a set of Seekers with ranged combat.
A Slann Mage WINNING combat against a Daemon Prince because it was a BSB and killing it due to a failed leadership test.
Dwellers Below managing to kill off the Warlock Engineer who had Cracks Call lined up on the Slann Mage.
Cracks Call being cast with a 25 (5 dice + 2)... and getting dispelled with a 34 (6 dice + 4). No irresistible force or dispel at all.
The Lizardmen being used by the Ogres as a meat shield.
Just... lots of insanity, all over the place. I'd call it a fantastic and hilarious game! :)
EDIT: Oh, and we also can't forget. Mark now owing Reese a beer.
(Since it wasn't mentioned before, there was only one game last night... Lizardmen and Ogres VS Skaven and Daemons... 2000 points per player.)

Yeah definitely never seen so many WTF rolls in one game lol. worst bit was my beautiful keeper being killed by an ugly toad, absolutely heartbreaking. Least I got a beer out of it ;D

I believe it's 1 out of 532... because triple 1's are 1 in 216. I think twice in a row is 1 in 46,656. I always feel rusty on math when calculating odds.

Had I know it would be so crazy, i might have stuck around. Generally I love doubles ,cause it evens the field a lot and dilutes some of the crazy 8th edition stuff.
We should set up a doubles night in a few weeks get folks to sign up and have a good old slaughterfest.

Thats a great idea, love brews on the losers lol. Depending on how many folks we have we might be able to get an even bigger game. 3v3 or 4v4... Although that might need to be a weekend given the normal starting times.
We tried a 8v8 once in 7th edition. It was beyond insane but an absolute blast (just took like 6 hours).
The best part of doubles/multiplayer is you can be new and will learn a lot from the other players both on your side and that you're facing.

Both games went pretty well... except we had a lot of bizarre rolls in the Empire vs Skaven game... just really odd all around. Everything still seemed to be fun though, which is the important part!

Sean, I believe.
He had bad luck of having his Hydra murdered in the first turn and was kind of trying them out for the first time I believe.
One thing I noticed from the game, Dark Elf magic is kind of absurd. :( Makes me wish my Skaven had fun tricks like that...

Ok... well maybe a few little more insane tricks then... lol. ::)
I haven't really found Scorch or Skitterleap to be all that helpful though, then again I run most of my characters joined up with units pretty much all the time.
I think I tried to cast 13th every turn last night... never got it though... but it's fun to just save two dice and try for it last... just in case you get lucky.

and scorch and skitterleap are awesome spells, i'm sure when you get the hang of using them you'll agree.
and that is a very strange line of reasoning regarding the 13th. you know you're only gonna get it about once every 6 games if you do that right? lol. and power scroll is your friend.

Oh, yeah, I made serious attempts at it too, but if I had two spare dice, I'd try it for grins. Not that I was counting on it to go off on any of the 2 dice attempts.
And yep, I had a power scroll, he just dispelled the hell out of it the time I used it.
I think he was using whatever school of magic comes in the DE book, I don't really know what the schools do outside of the Skaven ones.

the trick with the scroll is to use it when you roll really low for the winds. then you pop your power scroll and force it through with your warp tokens.

It varies but there's 6-8 regular fantasy players with a couple extra who swing by occasionally.

Yep, generally we have about 2-3 games going, sometimes less if we're doing 2v2.
It's a good crowd, we joke a lot and just enjoy the game / have fun. :)

sounds good, should have been more speciffic, but i used to play 40k and just moved into the fantasy scene. What armies are usually around? i was thinking of playing brets, but didnt want to play the army that everyone plays

A few games last night that I'm aware of:
Dark Elves and Vampire Counts VS Dwarves and Lizardmen
Orcs and Goblins VS Skaven
I was involved in the 2nd game with Jake, and my lord was it a bloodbath. Orcs wound up winning the day... barely. I think the first two turns had the Goblins lose about 60-70 models... then turn three had the same thing happen to the Skaven. The sort of game you love, lots of death and destruction! :)
For a total count, I think we started with about 300 models combined on the board... and wound up with under 30 left!

I go paint on Tuesdays sometimes, I think that is the assigned painting day.

I think the Calendar for the store has it listed as "Painting Social", and it is normally set up for the last Tuesday of each month.
I don't normally see a ton of people for it, but yeah, it is on the schedule.
Also, no-one will mind if you just show up and paint anyway, I think we had people doing that during the magic tournament on Saturday while other people were also playing 40k. Do what you'd like really! :)

Huge game last night... literally.
3 v 4, Forces of Order vs Forces of Chaos, 6000 points per side... across two tables.
For the actual force breakdown:
Order:
Dwarves - Empire - Bretonians
Chaos:
Vampire Counts - Tomb Kings - Tomb Kings - Skaven
The game was going well, then the wheels kind of came off. All the undead armies were huddled together and things were looking good with buffs, then the Mortis Engine exploded while in combat with Bretonian Knights and Empire Greatswordsmen... and the Skaven caster miscast killing off one of the Hierophants of the Tomb Kings causing an army to start crumbling...
And the entire time the Dwarves and Skaven mostly just sat off to the side glaring menacingly at each other while launching artillery at anything in sight.
Still, a hilarious game all around, lots of insane dice rolling! ;D

Anyone have any thoughts towards a Tuesday Tournament? My idea is that if a group of us commit to three Tuesdays in a row then we could run a three round tournament over the course of three Tuesdays. Not a serious tournament with prizes and crap, just something for fun and competition.

I don't know who won the Beastmen vs Skaven game (I know it was close).
I know that the Vampires walked away with the other game... I think my Skaven killed... 90 points? In a 2500 point game? Ugly.
I really don't know much about the team game either, totally missed it while I was getting molested by the Vampire with Red Fury (no, that's not code for anything).
I think next week we'll have 2x Dwarves vs 2x Skaven... should be a total mess! ;D

Well, last night was quite interesting. My Orcs & Goblins were blown to bits and fled from the verminous hordes in the first game. The second game I played (against Skaven again) went very well for the greenskins. My chariot smashed into a lot of stuff and the boyz sent the rats running. Sadly, the Night Goblins were ripped apart by skaven artillery and the survivors fled. It looks like the boyz handled everything just fine though. Thanks for the fun informative games Kyle!
As far as other games go, I didn't catch any except for a game of Wood Elves versus Brettonians. Exquisitely painted elves I'll add, whoever you are.

10-10. I was pretty up top of 5 but two 13th's brought it down to a draw. A particularly nasty 13th got one of my hordes turn 5 and the other my flamers on turn 6. Shoulda just backed off lol. good game though, hellpit no like big papa.

Hey I'm brand new to war hammer fantasy. Been collecting for a year now but I can't find anyone local that plays. I've read the rule book but never played my first battle. Are Tuesday nights a good time to try to learn from more experienced people? I just need some one patient that can take me through a few battles hands on. Plainville is an hour for me but at this point its the only place I've seen where people still play Warhammer.

I've played fantasy twice since the new edition. I want to get into it again but the place closest to me (pandemonium games) is pretty slim on fantasy players.

We normally schedule games ahead of time either through the thread or at the club. If you are used to the basement at Pandemonium you'll really like battlegrounds.

I think if BG had regular fantasy tournements then we could gradually increase our fantasy player pool. I really like the new Lizardmen book but I'm hesitant to start due to potiental lack of players to play with or tournement support.. just my 2 cents.
