Title: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: jfoodmaster on February 11, 2012, 11:16:42 AM
Good morning True Believers!

The start date has been ironed out. March 1st is the start date. I'll be there to start sign ups by 6pm.

Here's the info on the Journeyman League:
http://privateerpress.com/organized-play/leagues/journeyman-league-rules

Here's a PDF of the rules that we'll be using:
http://privateerpress.com/files/CompleteJourneyman.pdf

Go here to pre-register!
http://www.privateerevents.com/events/details/15243

Here's how we're going to start:
You can use any of the prepackaged battleboxes from Privateer Press.
OR You can also use any of the alternate starter boxes from the Journeyman PDF.
If you don't want to use either of those options you can start with up to a 12 point battlegroup. That includes 1 warcaster and any number of NON CHARACTER Warjacks/Warbeasts that are less than or equal to 12 points.

After that, we will increase as per the PDF.

In addition to the patches from the Journeyman League kit, there will be a small prize in the form of store credit (if enough people play) AND there will be a painting prize (contributed by me).

The last bit of this is the additional painting prize:
People who want to participate in this will be responsible for showing me an UNPAINTED model of their choice from the faction they chose. They will have the 6 weeks of the league to paint it. At the end of the 6 weeks, I will award the prize for the best painted single model.

Abington?  I thought the original plan was Plainville Paint and Grow?

Oh well!  But, as an aside, if this does get to Plainville in the future, are epics allowed in the beginning?

Is this only Abington? No love for Plainville?

I will try to put something together in Plainville sometime soon.  I'm not sure why the shift went towards Abington.  Maybe it has to do with meeting day conflicts.

It didn't seem like things were going to work out with days in Plainville. We'll get there. Don't worry.

Can you start with one caster / jacks and then switch to other casters /jacks and then use them during the league?

I think I'm still going to try to do this.

Leaning towards Magnus since I can paint up Khador and Cygnar friendly units as part of Four Star.

Magnus is my boy for this, too. I think I may try the Bad Seeds theme force.

I have too much of a head start on my other factions' starters (or the equivalents) so I'm going to roll with this. I really wanted to get Gators but for so many reasons I probably shouldn't and just paint what I already own.

Is it 12 points plus the warnoun points? or 12 points of stuff regardless?

:( best painted model would be awesome to try for If I could do Abington. Emory and a Couple others from Plainville know an Idea I am kicking around for a Manticore and it would be great to see how it would face up :P.

Yeah, you get up to a 12 point battlegroup.
Example:
pMadrak (+6 Warbeast Points)
Troll Axer 6pts
Troll Axer 6pts
Troll Axer 6pts

Total: 12 pts

I'm pretty excited about this too.

Can you be under the 12 points for week one? If yes then what's the most you can be down by?
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: NateT on February 17, 2012, 02:48:43 PM
For funsies I was making 12 pt lists for my various unpainted Cygnar casters (Haley, Seige, eCaine, eNemo, eStryker), and most of the time the more "sensible" selections were only 11pts... It was hard when restraining myself to 'jacks I already owned but were unpainted.  It got a lot easier when I said, I could buy a new Cyclone, or a Minuteman or Avenger (are they out yet?)

Anyway, it should be like a 10-12 point to start.  Leaving a couple points on the table for week one shouldn't be a big deal.

Jon, you still starting with Magnus?  What 'jacks you thinking about using?
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: jfoodmaster on February 17, 2012, 03:24:07 PM
@jon: I'm just leaving it at a max of 12pts for your opening Battlegroup.
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: jonm on February 17, 2012, 04:06:55 PM
@Sean: Alright. I was playing with some Ret lists too, but making a 12pt battlegroup I like is tough since the new jack kit won't be out until we're two weeks into the league.

@Nate: He's the front runner, but I am considering a couple Ret casters as options too. Mercs are tough because I don't really want to buy too much beyond what I already own (which is the battle box and a Vanguard). I was mainly thinking I'd use the league as motivation to paint up units for my main armies. Things like Nyss Hunters and Kayazy Assassins/Eliminators. I think I would like to maybe get a Nomad, and I pretty much have to buy Dougal MacNaile.

I want to do Ret partly because their one of my main armies to whatever I do here for the army is 100% productive, and I'd get more experience with the army I have the least experience with.

My problem with them is twofold though. 1) The warjacks I want to use primarily won't be out until the 14th of March which means I'd potentially have to buy more models I currently don't want to start the league. I don't love that idea. 2) Ret infantry is really good so my model count would probably be higher than if I did Mercs.
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: NateT on February 18, 2012, 11:42:18 AM
Well, from what I've seen of your Cygnar and Khador, either Ret or Mercs will look fantastic!  The angry elf side of me says do Ret... but the Mercs are always useful for most of your factions so it might be most practical to do them.

My vote is still Retribution though.  Come on, angry elves... besides like you said, it'll be good practice!

Looks like the Minuteman is in May. Sorry guys...
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: jonm on February 18, 2012, 09:40:43 PM
The Warstore lists the Minuteman as April 11th. If I have to wait until May for it there will be blood in the streets. Seriously, I'm so fucking sick of waiting for the Wrath release schedule to wrap up. Its locked in for at least 18 months now which is bonkers when you consider there were only 6-8 entries per faction. PP claims that all the Wrath models will be out before Colossals is released in June/July but it seems pretty impossible.
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: jfoodmaster on February 18, 2012, 11:23:24 PM
Yeah. They said that the Domination releases will cross over into the Colossals release schedule for a couple of months. SONS OF BRAGG!
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: jonm on February 19, 2012, 10:45:32 AM
I'm fine with Domination and Colossals crossing paths since they have to support both games at roughly the same time. Plus I really want my Winter Argus and Scarsfell Griffon. At least I get Ghetorix and Gallows Groves over the next few weeks.
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: NateT on February 19, 2012, 11:55:26 AM
And Ghetorix does look really cool... Hopefully the minuteman won't be too far away, since we already saw a picture of the complete model (usually close to release, right?)... Avenger is probably a way's off though.  I did see that WIP picture, which looked great!

Any word on if Minutman is a one off metal or Plastic?  or an omnijack kit for Hunter/Grenadier/Minuteman?
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: the_trooper on February 19, 2012, 01:19:23 PM
It is its own jack.

The kit as sold strictly as minuteman.

Likewise. Morghoul because I don't know why I don't like him, so I'll give him a shot and see what it is that I don't like. Zaal will be my caster swap' because I think I have only played him once? Him and Mordikaar have barely ever seen the board, so I'm gonna try to do them justice.

Agreed. I'm going to do the army of mine I've played the least -- Ret. And I'm going to run a caster I have no experience with -- still deciding between Rahn, Ossyan and Vyros.

I really like the Bad Seeds theme list. Seems like a lot of fun. The deciding factor for my switch was being unable to locate either of my Magnus models.  :-\

Vyros is bored , rahn is super fun.

Rahn seems pretty cool. I do like Vyros though as I am a fan of the Dawnguard aspect of Ret.

We had a great turnout for the first night. 8 people signed up. This is just the beginning! Faction breakdown looks like this:
2x Khador
2x Cygnar
1x Trolls
1x Retribution
1x Skorne
1x Legion
Even the doubled up factions have different 'casters. Pretty sweet. Now, get painting for MORE Journeyman points!

I had fun even though it was a long night for the elves. Myrmidons, man. I got to get the hang of using wussier warjacks.

That's Cause they are not warjacks they are better.

Were you running the Journeyman Battlebox or your own Im kind of curious.

To preface, I'm mostly using the league to a) play the army I play the least b) work on models that haven't been painted yet. Sadly I already have most of that standard battle box complete so I made up my own. Right now its Rahn a Phoenix and a Chimera. If I were feeling rich the Chimera would be a Manticore for better melee hitting power, but I couldn't justify buying another one when the Vyre kit is coming out in a couple weeks.

I was never out of any of my games by any means, and when I add some reinforcements next week I'm sure things will change. I'm looking forward to adding infantry because I feel like that's where Ret gets most of its blue chippers from.

I personally don't think myrmidons are better than most other factions warjacks. They certainly play differently (at least the Shyeel ones, less certain about Vyre til I try them) as they need more finesse.

I'm a new player just curious considering I picked up Ret as my starting army.

I'm not new to the game, but I am somewhat new to the army. Even with the games from Thursday I've had about 10-12 actual games with my Ret. I kind of more collected the army that actually played it when it first came out. I guess that is to say that my opinion isn't fully formed and I'm still very much finding things out about the army.

My comment about their warjacks being wussier is split. On one hand they're incredibly frail once their shield is breached. They lose systems pretty quickly once that happens. On the other hand, I could probably utilize them better.

As opposed to Jon who had a kinda frail battlegroup to start, mine seemed pretty good to start. I think that mine is gonna be crappy for a couple of weeks but get better at the end. I think Jon's going to be good for the next couple of weeks. Battlemittenmages are gonna be BOSS.

Yeah, I think I'll get stronger as we go. Rets strength is in their infantry and solos. Once I start adding them I think it'll turn the tables.

Retribution jacks, when looking at combat capabilities, are very poor when compared to other nation's options.  You mostly take them because you have to or for the utility they offer (strong aoe, arc node, vortex lock, etc).  The main power behind ret is it's units/solos and synergy.  Its my guess that once you hit 25 John you will start to notice the game you want to be playing.

General question/opinions:
In a competitive setting do people create more all-rounder lists or lists tailored to do one specific thing?

I ask this because I was looking to get some Widowmakers for my eIrusk list to make it a bit more well-rounded. Unfortunately the store I went to was out of Widowmakers, but I did pickup a War Dog and the Great Bears of Gallowood.

Widowmakers are almost always worth it. They can ping the last few points off of a 'jack's system or a warbeast's aspect or kill single wound infantry ignoring some powerful arm bonuses from Cygnar and Menoth. Against Cryx, I use them to knock off arc nodes on their bone chickens with rolled damage. Go damn, I love these guys.

I really, really recommend any Khador player owning a unit.

I pretty much agree. The Phoenix and Banshee boast the hardest hitting base weapons (P+S 17). The Manticore can get up to 18 but it has to spend one of its three focus to do so. Obviously if it also charged a target then that doesn稚 leave much room for additional attacks or boosts. Without spending a focus to boost his strength he痴 stuck at 15, which is about the same P+S as the remaining heavies. Not too inspiring.

They're really hearty utility pieces. They finish things off in melee, but they aren't scrapping anything outright. I feel like in the lower point games when other armies have multiple heavies on the table (i.e. Paul's two Berserkers -- with the Butcher no less) you really miss having solid hitting power.

This week I知 either adding a unit of Battle Mages, Skeryth, or an Arcanist and double Mage Hunter Assassins for an assassination vector. I was under a bit last week so this week I値l get some decent reinforcements.

General question/opinions:

I think for this league I知 pretty much building a single list that I値l play against everyone with. I might swap out a solo or something here and there, but that値l probably be it for me. If people choose to swap their caster then it might shake things up a bit.

All-rounders in the sense of take on anyone is usually the case.  As in, my eCaine list I'll use against most any army if I want to go for the assassination victory condition. I made it so I can have advantages against both Hordes and Warmachine.

Widowmakers, as Ian has stated, are my bane when it comes to my poor, poor stormblades.  I can buff them up to 20 arm easily and yet those widowmakers will still kill them without issue.  They aren't game breaking but really help in most lists.

Dude. They are the bee's knees against Menoth and Cryx. Like, if you can get a clear shot on the monolith bearer pre-pop, they're heroic. And like I said, a full squad usually messes up a bone turkey enough that they have to wander around bashing.

With certain casters, they're a must have. eIrusk, the Vlads, and any of our board control casters make them SO much better. I love popping the Old Witch's or Zerkova's feat and getting another free round of thinning infantry or working on a weapon arm on a 'jack.

Widowmakers are pretty much the balls of khador list making.  They do what you need and do it well.  As far as your question:

For the league you only have basically one static list so I would look to cover what bases I could at least to some extent.  This is a much more casual league and meant to get new people like yourself into the community.

For a steamroller or other tournament you have two lists so typically you will see one of two things.  Either a player will have two well-rounded casters/warlocks which can perform well in both scenario based play and have kill-box/assassination presence.  Or, you can go the other route and have one heavily focused on each aspect.

A well rounded list should have something to deal with the following at the very least if you want success:
-High armor (20+)
-High def/stealth models
-Spells/anti-magic
-Weak points your caster has
-a solid objective holder
-something to tie up/kill infantry
-a way to kill a caster effectively (this means no relying on outlandish rolls)
-Khador should probably also find ways to either get mobility or hinder the opponents mobility

Assasination lists should have the following concerns, with the above covered afterwards:
-Mobility methods up the ass
-something to deliver the killing blow (usually the caster)
-ways to clear a path
-delivery system
-protection/failsafe

Scenario guys should look for this, plus a good mix of the first list:
-High armor guys or a tarpit unit
-High defense guys
-mobility
-abilities like dig in, stealth, camo, incorporeal, or some other way to stay in there.
-a good aoe to clear off an objective
-an ace in the hole in case winning by scenario aint happening.

Khador should always have a way to deal with stealth and incorporeal, as magic is scarce beyond the warcaster. I recommend the grey beards (or whatever the old dudes with ice picks are) as the have solid utility and magic, plus sprays are great.

There you go, Goss's tactica of the day.  ;D

Widowmakers are definately one of the scariest units because they are just that damn good, and I don't even need to play against them to know that! There's a reason why you can only field 1 unit; to give your opponent a chance!
Title: Re: Journeyman League! Abington! March 1 Start!
Post by: Rofel on March 07, 2012, 08:27:41 AM
Well you will probably be safe from them during the league because I haven't picked up a box yet. I have the solo which I really like because it has stealth, but my build for the league is more melee-centric. One; because it's based on the models I currently have, and two; because Great Bears doing 5D/4D damage on the charge is sweet.

I'm going to be really typical and just throw in Beast Handlers, but after that it'll be Immortals since Morghoul doesn't provide synergy for anything but warbeasts.

I'm thinkin of bringing it at 25pts, but that'll be a crappy army. So, I might wait till 35. I've gotta get these dumb scattergunners done for next week.

All Trolls....all Shooting. Fun? Yes. Crappy? Better than I anticipated. :)

Update!

This week we added 3 new players! Total is up to 11 players in the league! There are alot of game points floating around. There aren't many painting points yet.

I am continuing with the shooting Trolls by adding a FULL UNIT Scattergunners with the UA. A terrible unit for sure, but 12 sprays with quick work might be fun. Grim's final reinforcements are just about here for the 35 point battles in 2 weeks!

25 points this week. Let's get some painting points!

We've passed the halfway point!

Tons of games have been played and many models painted.

This Thursday is the beginning of week 5. 35pts, same battlegroup and you can swap between your 2 casters all week.

Grim will be returning with some new friends after his Scattergunners were wiped out while on loan to Gunbjorn. It appears that Godrun has wandered away after many defeats. Also, it looks like Grim's reinforcements arrived just in time!

Also, don't forget about the battlebox tourney this Saturday in Plainville!

I'm usually available Saturdays or Sunday afternoons for pickup games.
