Title: Blood Bowl
Post by: Benjamin on September 14, 2012, 12:36:02 AM
So Battleground Matt and I are pretty excited about Blood Bowl. We are just learning. We're going to be hanging out at the Plainville store this Saturday, and I figured I'd extend an invitation to the community. Super casual, I wouldn't even expect a game so much. Hopefully our Blood Bowl starter kit will arrive soon-ish and we'll begin in earnest. Begin what exactly, I have no idea. But it is fun so far and it looks like a very easy tabletop game to learn, with just as much depth as you want.

I have the starter box sitting in my trunk right now.  I would love to get in a game against you, but I have never played; I just have the started box sitting there.

The kit was ordered on Tuesday and is a 10-14 day ship.

Here's hoping...

Matt and I have no table top experience, just a bit of the video game. We're not that further along at all. The rules are very simple so far, but we just need to actually learn them. What we've experienced so far has been really fun.

I haven't played Bloodbowl in years, but my team, the Grudgebearers, would love to come out of retirement.

My High Elf team, "the New Ulthuan Patriots" might throw down.  I haven't played in like a decade, so a refresher is required.

Everyone loves and has Blood Bowl teams.

Watch out!  We might HAVE to do some sort of league.

I think that is true Chase. Even I have one or two teams hiding around

I am definitely interested.  I have played the video game quite a bit and think playing the board game would be a blast.

Blood Bowl is one of the best board games ever made.  It was actually very tactical, and very FUN!

So we played today, and it was just fun all around.

Without a board, I took a piece of the foamcore normally used as a painting surface and drew out a pitch. I brought a bunch of Fantasy minis I have just laying around and quickly made some teams. Humans vs Ogres.

The first half was spent hammering out rules. We basically were able to figure out most of the questions ourselves. The second half went much quicker, and the die rolls favored both sides better. The Ogres lost 2-0, but the Humans took an absolute beating in the last 4 turns.

Six and a half hours later, a game was complete. The second half only took two hours. With quick reference sheets and more practice, games will definitely be faster, an encouraging sign to all.

With the pitch being relatively small, we can play on the regular tables, which is good. I don't want to compete for space.

looks like GW has it available and shipping within 24 hours, i assume Chase either has some or has some on order

Other than that i don't know a damn thing about the game, everyone is talking about teams does everyone make their own from random models or do they sell teams for it?

is this all brand new Ben? or some kind of seasonal thing? because i don't think i've ever seen them at BG or on the interwebz

Some cool looking teams there, do they have benefits and special abilities much like regular 40k? or are the different factions just for flavor?
Title: Re: Blood Bowl
Post by: NateT on September 16, 2012, 01:53:07 PM
Oh yes, there are some big differences between teams.  About what you'd think, dwarves tough and slow, orcs tough and dirty...  Wood elves fast and accurate... Humans as generalists.  There are different "classes" on the teams.  I can only speak to High Elves specifically, who had lineman, white lions (receivers) and dragon princes (blitzers).  You can convert your own, or buy the GW ones!

Awesome game, with some great rules and gameplay.  Full game should be under 2 hours, too!

Blood Bowl has been around for quite some time. Decades? Football season came upon us and there was the copy of the Blood Bowl game for the 360 sitting behind the counter, one thing leads to another, zeitgeist!

A rulebook is available from GW for free.

That will give you a general idea.

Players can die on the pitch. Players can be thrown off the pitch for committing fouls (unless the referee accepts a bribe [and even still may just take the bribe and eject the player anyway]). Wizards can cast spells from the stands. The crowd takes an active role, pummeling any player unfortunate enough to be shoved off the pitch, or sometimes invading the field on a kick-off for the love of hooliganism.

Different teams have very different strategies. Elves like passing. Chaos and Orks love pummeling. Ogres and Snotlings try to co-exist, bringing extremes of size, strength and agility to one team... just so long as the ogres don't eat the snotlings.

I am so in.  I am getting sick of painting 40k grunts.  I will be nice to be able to spend a little time painting some nice minis without getting bored doing it.  At it is football, which is a plus.

Hmmmm...maybe I will build a nice 3d pitch to play on....

Anyway, I would be up for giving it a go this thursday.  I can bring some 40k Orks or some painted D&D miniatures to use as a team.

With any luck (and it will require luck) we'll have 2 boards from GW on Thursday. One will be opened for the store, the other is going on the shelf, because it's awesome and I should have it anyway, even if GW "doesn't let me."

I wouldn't hold your breath though.

Blood Bowl is definitely a seasonal thing, a once every two years seasonal thing.  We were due for a Blood Bowl boom in Plainville.  The game is absolutely awesome and I think that players will really enjoy it.

The game takes a while to play until both players have the rules down 100%.  I know the last time Blood Bowl took off in Abington players started using timers to speed things up.

Players can order teams through BG, although it takes the 10-14 days to come in, like normal "bitz" type items (items they don't let me put on the wall).  If memory serves, I think most teams are in the $50.00 range.  I remember Humans being more for some reason.

I'm not 100% sure but somewhere we might have some sealed Blood Bowl trophy figures kicking around in Abington from a long time ago when someone ordered them and never picked them up.  If it takes off and we do something "official" with the game I might try to hunt them down.

A fun tid-bit.  I think there's some sort of penalty, but I remember seeing someone's Orge (or maybe it was two Orges) just flat out KILLING the other players team.

Yea, individual players can get killed during the course of the game.  How awesome is that?!

I was playing against Halflings last night in the video game, and 4 of them were killed. 3 by my team and the fourth by a rock thrown from the stands on a kick-off. I almost cried with joy.

I have 2 boards to use.  One is cut in pieces. We used it to build a 4 player board.  And when it comes to in-game casualties, my dwarves have forced teams to forfit by killing, injuring, and ko ing enough of them that they couldn't field the minimum 3 models for a kick off.  The game is insanely fun and wonderfully brutal.

I thought this was a serviceable quick reference sheet for Blood Bowl. I've printed one out, but anyone playing should probably have one too.

It's also a good place to start, if you're trying to figure out which rules come up more often than others.

I'm thinking I'll be by the store tomorrow to check out the board and try to get a match in or something. Maybe I can rope in some of the Ascension players to try a real game. (Yeah, nerd burn!)

I definitely need to read through the rules if I'm going to coordinate some sort of league in the future.

I'm curious what the contents look like  :o

A board, 11 Humans, 11 Orks, a few templates, a fancy softcover rulebook, appropriate dice and a grassy pitch. It's solid.

Rob, you said you were looking for a particular lady. This one, she's beautiful.

The current rules on the website are incomplete, missing at least 20 pages. They give you enough to run a game.

I opened the store box today and got the dudes glued to bases. People were doing their own thing, so I read up on League rules. It does look like a bit of bookkeeping, but they tell you everything you need to do and how to derive all the figures. I'm going to make a concerted effort this week to focus on that.

The rules on the Website are supposed to be the 6th Edition of the Living Rule Book  (Name of the Blood Bowl Rules). I went scouting around for info and most of what I can find is the 5th Edition Rules and mentions of how Inducements were the only major change from 5th to 6th edition. In a stab in the dark I sent an E-mail to the Games-Workshop Customer Service see what they have to say about the missing pages. They have not gotten back to me though.
Title: Re: Blood Bowl
Post by: Benjamin on September 22, 2012, 10:59:08 PM
The pages are missing on purpose, so as not to duplicate too closely the rulebook you'd buy from them.

It says this in the rulebook.

Really? so the Sixth Edition Rulebook come in the box set only?
Title: Re: Blood Bowl

The rulebook online and in the box are both the most recent edition.

One is free and incomplete. The other costs money and is complete.

So If I wanted the Complete Rules I need to spend 83$ and 50$ more to buy a Team outside of Humans or Orks to play the game because the 20 something odd pages are missing. :/

$83 gets you every single thing you would want to play, but you don't need the box to play. If you don't like the Humans or Orks in the box, sell/trade those two teams towards the team you do want to play.

The ~20 missing pages all relate to running a league and fluff, from what I can tell.

You should spend all your money on this game, then read the free rulebook. In that order.
