It depends on the army and what you're going for with the board.  I'd say they're 18" x 24" on average (or smaller).

really depends on army size and what can of display your going for.   height it also a big thing to look at over square size aswell.

if you're planning to use it for transporting your army during a tournament, then i would lean toward a smaller dimension rather than a larger one as it makes it easier to manage a crowd while moving and safer placement when playing.

as a space marine army, you can probably get by with 18x18 to 18x24 as Chase mentioned, depending on how much terrain you put onto it as opposed to keeping it relatively flat.

I want to use it for both purposes of moving my army and display for painting score. I'm using space marines and they are siege specialists so I'm thinking some trenches

I'm currently working on one for display purposes only, I'll use a lunch tray for moving from table to table haha

I'm a big fan of working with a magnetic whiteboard and adding magnets on the bases.... Mainly cause I'm clumsy

The idea I had before I needed a better base because of it's size, (this board is going to be pretty large haha) is you take a crappy picture with a good frame, cut out the picture, and replace it with pink foam. I really like this idea because you have the flexibility with working with the pink foam, where you might not have that with a whiteboard. Plus then you have a really nice frame around it, as opposed to a ok whiteboard one.

I pet them simple. Dark brown with a graveyard earth dry brushed over it and some static grass

Are you still working on this or have you finished.  I make display boards and such like (I just posted my most recent one)  and would be glad to consult.
