Title: War of the Sphere: Battletech Map Campaign
Post by: Earl on February 14, 2014, 12:00:25 AM
This is an idea for a campaign I've had for a while now. The rules will follow the post. It will start on March 1st, this will everyone time to assemble forces and find a faction they like as well as  make sure the factions aren't overloaded one way or the other.

Faction Options- Inner Sphere- Lyran Commonwelth, Federated Suns Capellan Confederation, Draconis Combine, Free Worlds League

Clans- Rasalhague Dominion, Raven Alliance, Nova Cat, Wolf, Wolf-in-Exile, Jade Falcon, Sea Fox, Hell's Horses

Republic(units avaiable)- Highlanders, VII Hastati Sentinels, III Princeps Guards, VIIII Triarii Protectors

Rules-

Each player chooses  faction of either Inner Sphere, Clan or Republic origin. The Inner Sphere Powers are Lyran Commonwealth, Draconis Combine, Capellan Confederation, Free Worlds League, Federated Suns, Mercenary commands have to choose an Inner Sphere or Republic power to work for.  Clans powers are Wolf Empire, Wolf-in-Exile, Sea Fox, Rasalhague Dominion, Raven Alliance, Hell's Horses, Jade Falcon. Units from the Army of the Republic of the Sphere like the Highlanders will be allowed. Periphery powers will be allowed though no Homeworld Clans will be.
Each player will start with a stable of mechs, vehicles and Protomechs, the number of which will depend on the units origin. Those of Inner Sphere and Republic origin will start with a Company of mechs (12), while Clans units will start with a Binary (10). 1 mech slot is equal to 2 vehicles or 5
Protomechs. No more than ¼ of the unit may be Assault mechs. Players will choose a Military Unit from their respective power and use that Units Technology rating, A-F for IS units, the different Units for the Republic, and Front Line or Second for Clan. The force will then be chosen from its prospective Rand Assignment Table in Field Manual 3145. Units that do not appear on that RAT but do appear on the same table in Field Manual 3085 can be taken.
All Omnimechs start in the Prime Configuration.
Pilots should have names and all Pilots will all start a Gunnery 4 Piloting as piloting ratings can change during the campaign. Pilots are confined to the mech they start in unless it is destroyed, they can pilto another mech if either A. the pilot of the mech died or B. the mech is newly purchased.
Each Unit will be given 1,000 Warchest points these will be used to repair, rearm, replace/by new mechs/vehicles/protomechs, heal personnel, and improve Pilot statistics. Mechs bought will come from the units RAT either from 3085 or 3145.  All of this will use the rules in The Chaos Campaign. The Points will also be used to “buy” into games either attacking or defending. Simulating the cost of transport and upkeep for the unit. To convert from Warchest Points to Support Points players will multiply their Warchest Points by 5.

The Game
There will be a map for the game and each faction will be given control over an old Republic of the Sphere Prefect which they will attack from and defend from invading forces.
Each month each player will choose a planet to invade, Sending it in to Earl, by either Email or Pm on the Battleground Forums, this will need to be in by the last day of earch month. On the first these will be posted on a thread in the forums. Then it is up to the two players to set a date for their game if any.
When a world held by a player is invaded they have two choices either they can defend it or let it be taken. If they let it be taken then no game is played. If not then a battle happens. The two players will determine a Battle Value(BV) and make their force accordingly. The BV will be determined as shown in the program Solaris Skunkwerks. Forces may be less bt not more than the agreed up on BV.
The mission will be built by both players using the rules in Wars of Reaving. The only options that may be taken from the Addition Options table are : Bad Weather, Excessive Force, Hidden Secrets, Rough Terrain and Setting the Stage. Additionally the Objective Master of the Bid may not be taken by Inner Sphere Units. The buy in for attacking Forces is 450 Warchest Points while the buy in for defending players is 300 Warchest points. After the mission is fought the winner gains control of the planet while the loser is ejected.
Players may be pushed out of the campaign in two ways. The first being losing all Territory in the Remnant or going into Warchest Debt for two consecutive turns. The unit is considered untenable by their backer and recalled or let go of their contract.

Things you will need for the game at least 4 mechs, as Battletech isn't WYSIWYG as long as you tell your opponent what it is supposed to be you're fine. Pair of six sided dice, more dice are useful for denoting movement and fire modifiers. A Pencil and the sheets for your mechs. I will be making sure people get access to the necessary Random Assignment Tables to choose their forces.

Any questions can be PMed to me. This post may change as people point out things I've missed. But wont change after the Campaign starts without discussion.

I had a few questions...

1) Is there going to be salvage or the possibility of salvage depending on the misson??  If there is salvage is it just for points or can a player have the possibility of repairing and fielding said mech?

2) Can we use any varients of the options listed in the technical readout?  Or can we later adjust the mechs to any of the listed varients?  OR can I just put guns all up in my mech?

3) Can there be a house rule that PPC's only count the hit if you declare the PP-touch?

4) Farm Mechs? and get I get mad props for using it?  Like a bonus 5 WC points because I won and planted some grain while winning??

3) Can there be a house rule that PPC's only count the hit if you declare the PP-touch?

This STILL Lives on.  Also, if i can get the money together to purchase Mechs, I am in for Clan Wolf in Exile.

EDIT: Money not forthcoming. No mech campaign for me. There are too many bills that got shuffled in the 2 month limbo

1.) salvage is just used for points to up your WP

2.) You have to use a Cannon Variant that your faction as access to. if it says so in any of the 3145 tros and you can show it to me then its cool.

3.) Maybe but is usally comes up anyway.

4.) if you really want to you get props and a lower bv so its up to you. no extra wp for farming though this is Battletech not Peacetech

Rules-

Players will choose a Military Unit from their respective power and use that Units Technology rating, A-F for IS units, the different Units for the Republic, and Front Line or Second for Clan. The force will then be chosen from its prospective Rand Assignment Table in Field Manual 3145. Units that do not appear on that RAT but do appear on the same table in Field Manual 3085 can be taken.

Does "The force will then be chosen from it's prospective Rand Assignment table in Field Manual 3145" mean we will be rolling up our forced on 3/19/14 when we all meet or is that simply the list we can choose/customize our forces based upon?

Title: Re: War of the Sphere: Battletech Map Campaign
Post by: Earl on March 03, 2014, 08:33:02 AM
That's the list you can choose from, based on whether for you the unit is Front Line or Second Line. So no rolling.

Going with Clan hell's horses

I do have a few more questions. I have gotten solaris to work but some equipment is missing and their vehicle design program is missing the page template.  So its like a connect the dots when you print preview.

One question I had was how do you tell if something has a transport capacity?

Second, I was going through the Total Warfare book to brush up on how things work and i can not for the life of me locate the rules for artillery.  I just found a blurb about it being able to fire directly/indirectly.  If you chose to fire indirectly you need a spotter/TAG.  If you have a spotter both it and the artillery fire at +1.  If you TAG you light the target and it is hit, but then it says to roll to hit and  if successful deal full damage to the hex and secondary to surrounding hexes.  If you miss deal just secondary damage.  I'm just confused on the procedure here.

Also how does skill factor into a units overall total BV?

And if we lose a pilot and attempt to recruit a new one, with the new guy start at 4/4 or can they be veterans?

Title: Re: War of the Sphere: Battletech Map Campaign
Post by: Earl on March 04, 2014, 01:22:02 PM
Okay firs what equipmnt is missing, heat sinks?

Carrying capacity can be found under troop compartment and it then gives a tonnage  which is the weight of the troops it an carry.

Artillery is in Tatical Operations and not in Total Warfare where it goes into the rules in more detail.

In the Techmanual it gives the matrix for this. But since it and SSW give different numbers were going with how SSW does it. A  3/4 pilot usually multiplies the bv of the unit by 1.5, but for some reason SSW does 1.22 unless we missed something.

And all recruits will be 4/4.

I have my list where should I send it too ?

PM on here or email it?  Let me know what you think, I took into account the information you gave me.

Also, in SSW do I have to create and load MASC because it doesn't show up under equipment.
Title: Re: War of the Sphere: Battletech Map Campaign
Post by: Earl on March 07, 2014, 01:23:24 PM
Email or PM is fine a written/typed up copy would also be good.

MASC is an option under engines in SSW the first page there, not where you get your weapons and such.

Where can we print out battlearmor sheets.  The suits I'm planning to use have modular weapon mounts and I can't find what the primary weapon configuration is.

Battle result for the planet of Skye. 12k BV, no extra objectives.
Attacker Earl was pushed back by the defence of the Raven Aliance.

Altough mostly out matched by tonage, Earl put up a well fought battle with four mechs and two points of armor. The mech battles were intense and costly for both sides.  Two of my five mechs left the feild with masive damage.  Earl had two mech's that could not continue the fight. One left on it's own power, though without arms, and one did not leave due to loss of it's engine.  With the battle armor out of ammo or close to it, my three remaining mechs took victory.

Raven Mech list and damage sustained:
Omen (85ton) External Damge, replace ammo
Cauldron-Born Prime (65) No Damage, Replace ammo
Rifleman IIC (65) External Damage, Pilot Hit x1
Vulture Mk IV Prime (60) Internal and External Damage, Pilot Hit x1, Engine hit x2, Replace ammo
Uller Prime (30) Internal and External Damage, Engine hit x1, Replace ammo

I will post current war-chest soon,  battle damage costs are being reviewed by Earl.
Good game.

I can not find a section for healing a pilot that suffered a hit?

Also I remember you said skill improvement was something along the lines of 1300 for gunnery?  Could you just clarify that for me, I found the way they do it in chaos campaign and it doesn't sound close.

Title: Re: War of the Sphere: Battletech Map Campaign
Post by: jesterofthedark on April 15, 2014, 06:21:48 PM
ok I have figured out the math on how the improved scores change the unit's battle value.

Piloting increases the cost of the unit my 15%
Gunnery increases the cost of the unit by 20%

and the new value get is based off of the current battle value not the original value.
Example, Jupiter starts at 2784+ 418 (15%)= 3202, improving the gunnery +1 is 640, that is 20% of the current value so the finale Battle Value is going to be 3842.

If someone you are checking my math will not I'm not including the .000, this is because as Earl has pointed out Battletech rounds up or down as it should.

is there a limit to how much one mech can improve after one game?

Also, for improvements is it an improvement for each game played?  Can a mech that has participated in a fight only improve after a match it was involved in or once deployed can be improved as much as desired after later games?

You can only improve stats by one after each game. And for ease of book keeping only after a mission they take part in.

Hello Cousin Billy! How is the big city life treating ya, fast cars and movie stars and all that!, Me boy Zakariah just loves tellin everyone he meets about his big city uncle and all the glitz and glamor of your life. the boy even takes after ya so good at his lessons. But I aint writen ya ta tell ya how great ya are because boy do I have a story for ya.
So me and the boy we was out in the west fields the ones just before the big old lake, ya know the one. So we was out there checking on so of the equipment we got out there when we saw the dambdest thing a real honest mech fight, and it wernt like those solaris fights your dad had on file this was two groups right ready to kill each other.
Ok so we was a good ways away and even with the binoculars it was a bit tough to make out the details the boys got better peepers than me and says one side had some sorta animal on it, said it was a possum or mabye a weasel!. Right so these two groups just barely met and they started attacking each other and they was furious and huge I swear on my mama's grave one of them musta  been 100 meters tall!!
Those two they was fighting like nothing I ever imagined lazers and cannons we was a long ways off and even there it was almost deafenin. It didnt last long the two sides blasting away like there werent no tommorow. Zak Swears he saw one of them shoot the head off another they done tore each other appart a few minutes after it started they where all just smokein ash, and melted metal, we saw one or two of them run away but it didnt look like nether of them really won the day. Though I suppose me and the boy won seein somethin like that and livin to talk about it. Right after it was over me and the boy ran off to tell people, when we got back there a bit later someone had come and cleaned most everything  up, we even went down to the battle field and most everything was gone, zak and a few of the local kids did find a few bits of scrap and some shells from some guns but that was all the proof we had, cept of course a few pictures the boy got, but there mighty far away and blurry.
well cousin figured you would want to hear bout something like this it was one heck of a thing to see, the boy's excited wants to be a mech driver when he growns up but me I guess I hope I never see a battle that close again.

Talk To ya Later
Cousin Jeb

If your mech is "cored" but you still control the map at the end of the game
do you have to buy a new one or can you just repair it?
Title: Re: War of the Sphere: Battletech Map Campaign

The mech is destroyed if it is cored and not taken out by engine hits. So you have to buy a new one.

RE: Second Battle for Ronel

Sir,
In accordance with our contract IES forces were stationed on Ronel to protect assets that were recently acquired.  This appeared to be more than just good procedures however as Clan forces commenced a counter attack.  The purpose of this counter attack seemed at first to retake the planet but as IES was able to hold off the assault, the Clan tactics seemed to change to inflicting as much damage upon our forces as possible.  Unfortunately they succeeded in destroying three quarters of our forces before being finally defeated.  Ronel, however is still under AFFS Control.  We would like to make honorable mention of Lt. Charlotte White who was the last mechwarrior standing after a particularly vicious fight.  Her AWS-9Q Awesome "Flutter-by" was damaged but proved up to the task of holding off the last of the Clan forces.  As always I hope you are satisfied with our work and hope to continue working for you.

Following is a summary of repair and re-arming costs:

Jupiter 225sp
Minotaur 34sp

Jupiter 20sp
Total: 269 sp = 54 wcp

Mission run down:  Defender- 300wcp

                            additional weather-  Freezing Temperatures -40*
Total Track Cost: 375wcp (is bad weather a +100 cost to the track?  or an additional 100wcp?)
Total Gain from mission objectives: 1350wcp (maybe 1450?)

Upgrade:  Jupiter- Piloting 300sp
                           gunnery 500sp

Total Cost: 3300sp = 660wcp

Total Reserves after battle:  1286+1350-1089= 1547wcp

Unsure how the weather element works out for the end of game bonuses.  The page states its +100 and +300, Not sure how that equates to wcp.  Only because part of the chart refers to -100 for bonuses given to your opponent.  Earl Please bring me the light of knowledge to steer me from my darkness of ignorance.

*this part got cut off, but after the game I sold off the Parash to purchase a second Incubus II.
Parash sold off- 875sp

+100 to the track cost and +300 to the WP bonus. Thus I have spoken and thus it probably shall be unless im wrong wich im probably not. that applies for both people for the record
Title: Re: War of the Sphere: Battletech Map Campaign

its +100 to the cost?  That is what confused me, some of the other options have a negative in the war track cost column.  For example the fire from above, its says -200 to give your self orbital attacks it also have a -500 under WP rewards.  So, this reduces the mission cost, gives you the orbital shots, and reduces your reward?

And by the same logic the weather modifier adds +100 to the mission cost, a random weather effect and nets you a bonus +300 to your winnings?

sorry, I'm just confused by how it works and I don't want to do it wrong and give myself bonus wcp because I misread it.

yes and yes. The orbital Bombardments woud only add to you. But the weather would add for everyone. You have it correct there.

RE:      Recon in Force against Stone Lions

     Sir,
As per contract we engaged in an assault on Stone Lion positions on the planet designated #4482.
We found Stone Lion forces to be mainly Protomechs supported by light mechs with a commander in an Assault (See attached battle intelligence report).  However the assault did cost us, mostly due to a  miscalculation in "Drops" which caused our combat vehicles to arrive alone and well ahead of the mech force.  The vehicle crews fought valiantly, and held off the Stone Lions as much as possible.  When the Mechs arrived we were able to collect the wounded and retreat with only the loss of one mech.  Unfortunately, half of the vehicles were destroyed.

Mission Report:  The following is a formal submission of the events having occurred during a training mission over seen by commander Aenerion.  The following has been taken as a dictation.

Sir,

As ordered we have begun inter-grating battle armor as a tactical option for our smaller scouting forces.  Deploying with reserve armor on loan to us from the 49th division, the 401st early engagement forces ran scouting and emergency insertion and evacuation runs.  I could not have been more pleased with the performance of the 49th's gnome pilots.

During the exercise our forces came into contact with a forward scouting unit with IES markings, they seemed to be the forefront of a larger force.  Luckily,  our unit with the 49th's assistance was able to over come the majority of the first wave before mech forces arrived to support them.  Losses where minimal, only one of our minotaurs was beyond repair, and I regret to report that one of the 49th's gnome units was annihilated during an artillery barrage.   As for repairs, we did suffer heavy damages to all units.

I am glad to report despite our losses, we were able to inflict back damages two fold to our attackers.  As a result we were able to repel their forces and able to claim their lead mech, a battlemaster, a a trophy.  Despite heavy damages I believe the unit can be repaired and put into commission.

Thank you,
Commander Aenerion

Subject: A Two Fold Denial

This Package is being sent by the fastest courier possible to keep you, My Sakhan informed of recent boons and curses in the Mercantil and Military matters of the 3ed Aimag. We recently came under attack by not one but two forces deployed by our fellow clans to claim our worlds, the near simultaneous nature of these attacks required a level of finesse to deal with, Knowing we could not fully defend both worlds I divided my forces sending the majority of my ships to one planet and only a single ship to the other, it all relied on a simple deception, convince one of our opponents that I had resources sufficient to decimate his fleet and then offer them a battle of champions a simple trial of refusal. The other world instead received the rest of the mechwarriors leaving it well defended indeed though it too carried risk, with no space based assets to call upon I was relying on the Jade Falcon commanders to land and fight it out with honor.

I regret to inform you that my ploy both succeeded and failed in equal measure, my fleet convinced them to face my champion, unfortunately with only a single NOVA for defense, the Warrior was vastly outmatched in both personal skills and firepower, a rare situation for a Nova pilot to find themselves in, and she was defeated.

The much larger defensive battle was successful, the Jade Falcon where driven back with no serious losses, though it was close. Details of our damages follow this report.

On a more positive note the chaos and battles raging across the inner sphere have done wonders for profits infact as I was writing this report a order was placed by the Jade Falcon for replacement parts needed due to the above mentioned battle, we may not win many worlds in this war but with the credits we make supplying the forces involved we may be able to just buy a few when its over.

loyally yours,

Sir,
As per the contract recently signed we engaged Ghost Bear Forces on planet designated Target #45.  Also were were able to capture the Commander of Ghost Bear units in the field, however, Clan forces were also able to capture ours.  While this resulted in a prisoner exchange between the two commanders the Intel gathered in the fight was very valuable.  Several units were able to penetrate deeply into Clan territory and return.  Also we were able to withdraw with most of the units still intact.  (See following document for repair costs).  Also we are selling Lt. Sir,
I must regretfully inform you of the loss of planet Ronel to forces of Clan Snow Raven.  Although valiantly fought, the forces there were overwhelmed.  I must also inform you of the loss of Lt. Charlotte White, who gave her life in the battle.  Battle data and intel on attacking forces was collected and will be transmitted along with this message.

Respectfully,

Sorry I have missed the past two meetings, I have been dealing with my son having more than a few health issues.  I have been checking the boards and touching base with cale to see where I am at.  Just bad luck these issues have come up on tuesday or weds nights.
