I assume it would be this Friday (the 11th), but I haven't seen anything posted either here or on the old board that says anything definitive.

Does anyone know something for sure?

Well, I do reckon the game would be this week if 'twere scheduled regularly.  Y'all.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I'm going to schedule our game for this coming Monday, July 14. Let me know who can or cannot make it.

Thanks,
~Ben

Apparently the old forums still exist over there on Yuku, so Ben's been posting there.  I'll give you fellows a direct hotlink on this here clicky (http://battleground.yuku.com/topic/1201?page=12).  Wow.  I'm feeling so very southern...

I'll be there on monday.

Hey 'Guu', don't forget to bring Bioshock again.   ;D
Thanks.

Hey guys,

I don't know if the others (Dan and Micah) know of this new forum yet, but hopefully they'll learn about it soon.

Sorry you can't make it tonight, Steve, but I'm for DC on Wednesday, so it was either tonight, or another 2 weeks from last Friday.

On the bright side, I'm 99% sure that the next one will be on the 25th.

Maybe tonight we'll play Order of the Stick again, since last time it was just the four of us too.

See you guys tonight.
~Ben

So, are we meeting this friday or...

I hope Lykosan got his Bioshock OK.  If not, by god it was INSURED.  I'll have to catch him on IM...

This Friday is the Realease Tourny for the new Magic Set, if we are playing this Friday I will not be then, as I plan on being in that Tourny.

Hey guys,

Yes, tomorrow would be our next game day, and as it turns out, we're probably going to be down half the table (again).

I do have the next part of the story arc for my game to play, but if you'd all rather wait until we have at least 4 of the usual "usuals", I'm fine with that too.

Let me know how you guys feel about that.
~Ben

Steve hates us.  :(

Or me.  I'm sure it's me specifically.  I mean, that's what friends are for!

I'd like to play if at all possible.  What else would we be doing?  I guess we could mess around in 4e again or something...
Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on July 24, 2008, 06:41:23 PM
It is what it is.
You make do with the people you have.

If we're going to do 4E again, can someone print out a character sheet for me?  I'm too lazy/cheap to have a printer of my own.

-Rick
(who is not now, nor has ever been Lykosan)

PS I did get Bioshock in the mail.  Thanks.  However, as it turned out I was able to borrow a PS3 and MGS4 from a friend at work, so I spent most of my time getting my Old Snake on...

Ah, whatever.  One net handle looks the same as another to me after a long day of torturing rats with a hacksaw.

Are you quite SURE bioshock wasn't damaged?  It's insured!

I'll print out a bunch of 4E sheets at work.  Godbless you, stolen print services.

Just as a head-up guys, tonight is probably going to be an insane night. We have a Magic Release Tournament starting at 7 PM, and in the past I've had to use almost every seat in the store - back room and front tables included. If you are planning to play tonight, expect a very crowded, very loud night of gaming! :)

Pretty fun little get together.  I really wanna try OotS with a full table sometime.  I also wanna try it when I'm not sitting to Rick's right, because he's deadly.

Title: Re: next game
Post by: Rurouni Benshin on July 29, 2008, 04:20:05 PM
OotS was definitely a lot of fun.  I'm tempted to try the "Weekend Killer" when we have the time and players for it.... though I doubt we'd ever have the chance to do it.

Btw, the next game day is going to be next Thursday, August 7th.  Let me know if you guys can make it.

Nothing but OOTS for a full weekend?

Josh already has a grude against me after only two games; I'd hate to imagine how that might turn out after 2 days...

I can play on Thursday, if that's what everyone else wants to do.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Rurouni Benshin on August 04, 2008, 05:02:16 PM
I'm glad your mom's surgery went well, AJ.  Please send her my regards.

As for this Thursday, Steve, does this mean you're not going to be around the whole night?  I understand that the back room may be occupied, but that's never stopped us from playing in the front before.  If you're busy the whole day then, maybe we can do something else.

... Like Order of the Stick!!!   :P

J/K, but unless that's what everyone wants to do, then I have no objection.  We should let Micah and Dan know too though, just in case they are available that night.  Will anyone here see Micah tonight or tomorrow to let him know?

Otherwise, I'll see you guys Thursday.

Ok....

So I'm being called to MD for work for the rest of this week, which means that I won't be in town for the game this week.  Sorry guys, but I'll let you know soon when the next game day is.

Thanks for understanding,

Ouch.

Does anyone want to do other RP-related things on Friday (or even tonight)?  Play magic?  Play some other game?  I could start a 4th ed. campaign in mockery of Benworld.

It's virtually impossible for me to get to the store much before 7 pm.

Out of work around 5, home around 6, and if I push it I can get to BGs by maybe 6:30?  6:20 if traffic is merciful.

I'll do my best to get there ASAP.

I'll be out of town until 9/6.  I can run on the 12th, and wouldn't mind running then.  Ben said he was happy to give up the seat for a little while at least.

Amen to that...

On another note though, I've recently gotten into Axis & Allies Mini's, and have quite a sizeable collection now.  If anyone wants to come down to the shop tomorrow night for a game (or learn how to play), I'll be there at the usual time.

Or we can always get a game of Oots...  Let me know!

As of right now, Josh has agreed to run again this Friday.  I'm sure if anything changes, he'll let us know.

AJ - do you want to play some A&AM before our session?  I'm actually going to be at the shop much earlier to watch the wedding that's taking place there.  Let me know how soon you think you can get to the store.

We're supposed to play this Friday.  As for this so called WEDDING, I also haven't heard anything about it.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Rurouni Benshin on September 18, 2008, 10:38:11 AM
It's actually a wedding between two of the regulars at the store.  They decided that it would be unique to have a public wedding there, while people are coming and going into the store, as if they normally would.  I only heard about this on Tuesday, and am probably going to take off from work early just to go see it.  Derek's going to video it, and maybe post it later on youtube for those who aren't going to be there for it.

It's starts at 12:00, and the reception will probably go until 4:00 pm, well before we start our game.  If any of you want to come by earlier to see it though, I'll most likely be there.

See you guys tomorrow.  AJ, are you getting any of this?

I believe the next DnD game will be two weeks from tomorrow, the 14th.

Some people might be coming in to play board games this Friday.

I still haven't decided whether to come for board game night yet.
Title: Tonight
Post by: Rurouni Benshin on October 24, 2008, 10:32:27 AM
Just to let you all know, if you haven't heard yet, tomorrow BG will be hosting Weekend in the Realms, which is an adventure set in the world of LFR, playable only this weekend.  It's a 3 part adventure, that runs about 3 hours per part, and will certainly bring any PC from level 1 to 2, start to finish.

You can bring your own LFR PC, or pick from a pregenerated one.  For more info, check out the thread that I started in the D&D section called "Weekend in the Realms at BG".

Hope to see you guys then.

I still haven't decided whether to come for board game night yet.

The absolute best night to play board games around the store is Wednesday, honestly.  Wednesday night is a great night to just drop by.  There's a lot going on.

We'd talked about meeting this Friday to play some board games, but honestly I'm now against the plan.  My mother is supposed to come in on that day.

Our next regular game is the 14th, and then we're planning to play on the 28th (black friday) but whether that pans out or not remains to be seen.

They say whenever a game campaign makes it through the holiday season it's an official campaign, destined to continue forevermore.

Sorry that the LAB GRADE 70% ETHANOL didn't manage to get that sharpie off.  It's really weird...that stuff comes RIGHT off the lab equipment when you use ethanol on it.

You might try some acetone (nail polish remover).

I don't know that I'll be around on Friday.  Are you making some plans, Ben?
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Rurouni Benshin on November 06, 2008, 12:28:10 PM
I actually do have access to acetone at my office, Josh.  I'll give that a try if I can later.

As for this Friday, I was just wondering if people were around for boardgames or anything.  I'm learning a new mini's game called "Flames of War", another game based off of WWII.  I haven't started collecting pieces yet, but it's something I'm thinking about investing in.

But if anyone's around for Oots, or any other game that they might have in mind, I'll definitely be there Friday, one way or another.  Maybe we can even get dinner or do something social outside of the store *GASP* :o I know, pretty drastic change there, huh...?   :P

Let me know if any of you plan on being around Friday.  Talk to you guys later.

You didn't miss any major developments, Ben.  The party made its way deeper into the dungeon discovered beneath Horncrest but they haven't found any answers.  There's still more dungeon to explore.

We won't be meeting on the 26th, so our next scheduled meet will be January 9th, after the New Year's Week.  Once the holidays are over, we'll play at a much more regular pace with few skipped sessions.  Hope everyone is having fun so far.

I won't be able to make this week's game either.  Chinese New Year is next week, and I'll be home celebrating with my family.  Hopefully I'll be back by sometime in February.

Talk to you guys soon,
~Ben

Yes indeed, we should be on for this week, and we'll maintain a regular schedule save for Tuesdays and certain bank holidays.

That's the idea anyways.  Bwa ha ha.

Sorry about not getting an answer to your question, THE geek.  Jan 30 was an off Friday for us.  Here's the schedule for the foreseeable future:

~Feb~
02/06/09
02/20/09

~Mar~
03/06/09
03/20/09

~April~
04/03/09
04/17/09

I want to point out that I've been sick this week and MAY need to cancel our game on Friday, though I'm doing a lot better now.  My voice is weak though and I'm not sure I can shout down the magic player across the wall all night.

I'll have you a definite answer on this by tomorrow (Fri 06) at lunch time, so please give the boards a check sometime after 1 pm tomorrow.

Well as I mentioned before Josh, I won't be around Friday for the game cause I'll be playing in the Magic Tourny that night, that is if I am feeling better myself.

It might go without saying at this point, but I won't be able to make tomorrow's scheduled game either.

And until further notice, you can consider me a "lost PC" for now.  Sorry guys, but work has been keeping me away from a lot of my other hobbies as well.

Have fun tomorrow (assuming the game goes off)!

We'll be playing 2/20 I reckon.

Since we're down a defender, if someone wants to reroll his character into a defender I'm willing to support that endeavor.  Let me know!

Yeah, if you guys are looking for an interesting, fun, and FREE way to spend an afternoon definitely come on down for some carnage.  You can find the details of the event in the D&D forum.

I'd love to get some of you guys down here to compete.  If you aren't able to get an entire group together it still may be worth your while to come down with a 4th level character or two and peice together a group right before the event starts.  Failing that I'd imagine it's going to be a fun event to watch.

Also, if any of you are in touch with any of the guys that play in Ben's LFR group that might be a decent way to grab a couple extra players.

We look forward to seeing you.

-Chase

Yes, we ARE playing.  Of course!  (What I mean is we're playing tonight, 2/20/09.)

I should be able to get to the store by 6:30, I'm hoping.

I can't consistently make it to the store on Saturday afternoons, but there's no reason the players can't have some fun there.

Curse you!  (I had an odd feeling something like this would happen this week!)

I assume Rick, Tom, AJ can make it?  Let's get some responses on that one.

Our group is smaller now with only 4 people, and three people is kind of hard to use in a full game.  HOWEVER, if people are willing to come to the game we can play something else.  I'll give a nice bit of bonus XP for people who show up, and I can provide the following awesome pastimes:

1.  Game of Thrones Boardgame
2.  World of Warcraft Boardgame
3.  Lord of the Rings Risk (okay, maybe that one's not super awesome)
4.  Magic or something?

I'm also willing to run a limited engagement RPG.  How about a brief lark into the Warhammer RPG?  Again, attendance will gain you bonus XP, or something awesome like that.

Post your opinions!  If multiple people can't make it for some reason, we'll probably want to skip.  Also, if anyone knows someone else who can join our group let me know please.  Having a group of five lets us avoid this sort of thing in the future.

I'm up for a board game, but no magic.  I gave that up 15 years ago, and haven't missed it since.

Free XP is nice too.  Hey, can this also count as an extended rest for the party so my character can level and recharge daily powers?  Just a thought...
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on March 06, 2009, 01:53:39 PM
I think we discussed that the players would have an opportunity for an extended rest before the final battle, if that's what they wished.

Let's see if anyone else looks at the thread today.  If no one else responds, let me know if you still want to make the drive up.  It could be pretty dull if it's just the two of us.  I'll be sure to check this thread again to give you a response by 4 pm ish.  Give or take a few minutes.

SFIV?  What about Monkey Island?  I did some tinkering and it seems 3 and 4 work.  They come with automated installers to get the thing running under WinXP/Vista.  There's a chance the auto install will fail if you've got some funky system configuration, but it's better than nothing.

Seems to work for me at least...  I can probably just mail you the game.

Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on March 24, 2009, 11:25:51 AM
I was just thinking... wasn't the main reason this campaign was originally bi-weekly because Ben couldn't make it every week?  If that's true, and if everyone else has as much of a boring life as me, do we want to at least try to meet every week?
I know that there will be times that people can't be there on any given Friday, but we deal with that already.  By doubling the times we could potentially meet, we increase the chance that we will be able to get in at least 3 games a month.

Plus, it would help me remembering what's going on in the campaign.  NPC names and campaign geography tend to escape me over time.

What does everyone think?  I know it would be too soon to try and do something on the 27th, but it's worth discussing on the 3rd.

We have 6 PCs now so we could potentially take on a 6th.  That being said we're an anarcho-syndicalist commune, so we'd have to get some broad opinions from the members at large.

You should probably stop by during one of our regular sessions.  Do you already know anyone in the group?

EDIT:  It occurs to me that Ben is on hiatus and *could* potentially want his spot back some day.  That's something to consider when we take on new people.

Guess I'll have to keep a campaign journal.

Every other week works out pretty well for me...just hard to make time more often than that.  Maybe if we'd originally started with once a week I wouldn't have gotten involved with any other games/activities.

Still, never hurts to ask, right?

As for some of your other concerns, I'm willing to post an NPC cheat sheet if you'd like.  Making some good maps and posting links to them is something I really want to do, but it can be hard to find the time.  If a rough sketch map is satisfactory I can provide it, but it's going to look like something made by a gradeschooler in MS paint.

By the by, I'm posting a copy of the letter you guys found in the last session so that everyone can read it.  ;)

I'll let everyone know for sure by Monday so you can make some other plans if you like.  ;)

um i dont really know anybody from any of these games im just kind of looking for a new campaign because my 4th ed. just got over and the place is done for good so i was looking for some place. i got the exirience to keep up and figure out the campaign etc. if you want just let me know what role you need i like the dragonborn sorcerer and half orc ranger but anything is open to me really ;D
Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on March 27, 2009, 01:17:05 PM
Maybe we should have more than the usual number of members because some people are usually absent anyway.  That way, we wouldn't have to cancel as many sessions for lack of attendance.

2 striker builds, eh?  I think we need a defender more, but that's just my opinion.  I'm the wizard, so the more meat shields between me and the big bads the better.

ok i got defender builds i got a goliath warden, dragonborn paladin/morninglord (radiant source if you have a lot of trouble with undead etc), or goliath fighter variant (the battle rager from MP at paragon he can shrug off huge damage) ill gladly throw myself in front of a wizard and beat people off you. ill be glad to join in just let me know what source books to do and what level and gp/magic items i get and i can be ready to join for next game i got nothing else reallly to do so expect ill be therealmost every week.

Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on March 31, 2009, 10:36:45 PM
The game usually doesn't get started until about 8 or later, but some of us (particularly me) are hanging around for a really long time before that.  I get out of work at 4:30 and live 30+ miles from my work and the store, so its not worth it for me not to just show up around 5.

If you'd like, I can go over the party makeup with you and how our games usually go.

Post by: jbkilroy on April 03, 2009, 03:09:11 PM
Yeah.

To be fair, the last one was just a collection of mini-games wrapped around a raunchy plot.

And from what I've heard this one isn't much different.

..the era of the classic adventure game has more or less come to a close.  People's attention spans are too short.

To be fair, I don't know too many people who ever played a LSL game did so for the plot anyway.
Title: Re: next game

To be fair, I don't know too many people who ever played a LSL game did so for the plot anyway.

I never played any of them.

When I was a kid, I couldn't get my hands on them, and when I got old enough to acquire the games I assumed they would be less satisfying than...er...other things I had discovered around the same time.

How bad did leisure suit larry get?

I'm quite enjoying monkey island.  Realistically, there are enough of these adventure games (good ones at that) laying around that you should probably not run out of junk to play for years.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on April 03, 2009, 05:30:16 PM
I have the classic LSL games (1-7, excluding 4.  There is no 4).

If I remember I'll make a copy to bring to the next game.

It never got particularly 'bad' per se; it was more about the humor than the sex/nudity (although there always was some in there).  Even back in the 1980s they knew they couldn't win on that factor alone.

ok what role am i in the party did we figure that out yet? just repy with like a vote or something what you need these are what ill most likely be for each
defender-goliath warden
striker-half-orc ranger/rogue
leader-dwarf shaman/half-elf bard
controller-tiefling warlock/dwarf invoker
so just pick one that you think the party needs the most and ill see you the 17th :)

Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on April 09, 2009, 10:31:38 AM
Mr. Tribalgooseeb:

The party has two strikers, a controller, and two leaders.  The best thing you could do if you like filling gaps is play a defender.  Otherwise, I'd recommend you play a controller.  In general we recommend people play what they want, but again the party's greatest need is for a defender, if you're into helping out the needy.

You probably shouldn't play a gnome because the group already calls itself the Gnome Punters, though I'm not convinced they put a lot of thought into that name.

We use the standard point buy system and I *think* you'll be starting at level 6, which is the median party level.  (I don't remember what level Billy's at...if he's somewhere around 5th then I might start you off with roughly equal experience to him in the interest of fairness.)  Plan your character for 5th or 6th level.

On Fridays, Rick is usually the first one in the shop and is clearly visible by his SFIV headband, which I assume he'll never take off now that he has it.  Then again, the Sox are playing again so you'll probably find him wearing a pair of headphones in the back of the store.  He can probably help you smooth over any of your character details until I arrive at the store on the 17th.

Game on!
Title: Re: next game
Post by: VikingWarrior on April 09, 2009, 03:19:05 PM
you can just call me dave ill be ready as the goliath warden as planned unless a paladin i badly needed (undead troubles etc...) so ill see you guys on the 17th and ill just make a 5th and 6th level with xp blank. how long do you guys usually play for so i know whether i need food haha. ill be there right after rick and im the chubby kid with glasses. see ya then
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on April 09, 2009, 03:43:14 PM
You can play a pally if you wanna.  Undead *are* a pretty prominent feature of the campaign.  That being said, there's already a cleric in the party and Billy is playing an avenger IIRC.

Chubby kid with the glasses describes 50% of the store population.  Skinny kid with glasses is 48%.  It was almost an even split before the invention of contact lenses.

Our regular time is supposedly 7:00 pm until ??? (usually until store closing around midnight).  I'm often delayed at work and arrive about 7:00 sharp but I've been known to be late.  There's always lots of activity in the store though and the regular people will be there to chat and mess around with.

You can buy snacks in the store and it's a pretty good selection.  For something more substantial, however, there's Kam's Garden a few doors down and that pizza place across the street.  People often order take out from Dominos and other places as well.  The store owners are very nice about letting you bring in takeout.  (Reason enough to never game anywhere else.)

Good to see you around the boards, AJ.  Just FYI, I'm pretty sure I won't be playing tonight, but I will stop by to say hi, since it's been awhile I've seen the group.  I'm sure that'll alleviate some of the DM'ing stress that Josh was foreseeing for tonight.

Btw, AJ, I'm running 2 LFR adventures tomorrow, one at 10:00 am, and one at 2:00 pm.  There's still room if you're interested.  Let me know tonight.

ok... so im staying defender? i dont really know which defender to be so can you give me an idea of what you guys are looking for? goliath is the best race for what we need but class is the main question idk any other good paladin paragon paths the phb ones suck
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Rurouni Benshin on April 23, 2009, 02:30:10 PM
Defenders all serve the same role in combat:  Base yourself with the enemies and keep them from going after your less armored teammates.  That being said, any defender can do any of those things.  It's just a matter of how flavorful you want the character to be.  Some races are better suited for certain classes.  (IE - Dragonborn make better Paladins, Genasi make better Swordmages, and Goliaths, Warforges, and Minators make better Fighters)

That being said, there're plenty of good Paragon paths in the PhB 1.  My guess is that you just haven't found anything you find particularly interesting to play.  If that's the case, then pick up a copy of the Forgotten Realms Players Guide, Martial Power, and/or PhB 2.  All have the stuff you need for Paragon Paths, as well as all the alternate class abilities that can make your PC more interesting to play.

Just because the campaign isn't FR doesn't mean that you can't use something that's in that book.

With DM permission, anything is possible.

Hey Josh, how about a magic blade I control with my mind that has a +20 bonus against all defenses and vorpal properties?  As an at-will attack of course.  Sound good?

Classes; hmm... we have a human wizard, human ranger, tiefling warlord... hmmm... there's a cleric and avenger, but I'm not sure what race they are.

Post by: VikingWarrior on April 24, 2009, 12:11:08 PM
ok well that narrows it down for me to the warden or fighter. are we in the wild or any primal-ish locations? thatd be basically the deciding factor. so most of the party is in melee? hm sure you dont need something ranged? unless the ranger is an archer and the cleric is at range you only got the wizard to hit from afar. just wondering cuz my sorcerer can basically fill the melee and ranged gaps. either way im happy and what level was i to be? 5 or 6?

Title: Re: next game
Post by: cursedchidori on April 24, 2009, 01:15:23 PM
currently its only 2 melee and 3 ranged. My avenger is an Elf dont know what the cleric is i think maybe dwarf but i could be wrong.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: VikingWarrior on April 24, 2009, 04:59:21 PM
ok well if im allowed morninglord i might do a stormsoul genasi paladin/morninglord/chosen of amaunatar otherwise just a goliath fighter/dread reaper/eternal defender so now its 3m/3r. so whoever the dm is can i know if i can use the forgotten realms guide for these:
stormsoul genasi race
maybe 1 related feat
power of amaunatar feat/power
morninglord paragon path
chosen epic destiny (for amaunator)
if not i could simply replace pelor and amaunator theyre similar or if totally no you got a goliath fighter ;D am i level 5 or 6? did you decide i remember there was one person you thought mayve been 5 idc really just wana play haha
Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on April 24, 2009, 05:22:35 PM
The ranger is indeed an archer build and the cleric uses ranged attacks 99% of the time; the warlord uses a spiked chain (and its reach ability) to attack.  This leaves the party with one straight melee character- the avenger.

By my math, that's 3 ranged and 1.5 melee.

I'm happier if you use races/classes from the core books and Phb2.  This is because I hate the forgotten realms with the burning, passionate rage of a thousand flaming suns.

That's a good reason, right?

Right?

The cleric is a human and the warlord is a tiefling.

The only thing about this PC that's not in either PhB1 or 2 is the Battlerager variant, which is in the "Martial Powers" book.  So unless I'm missing something, for the moment, Josh, you're still Faerun free.  :P

My god, you mean you're insane enough to come BACK?!

I don't mind if you remake yourself as a dwarf.  First session and all.  We usually reward 1/2 exp. for missing players, so you won't be too far behind.

Rick's mage hasn't missed a session and everyone else is still keeping pace.  Usually he hits a level mid-session where everyone else hits it at the end of the session.

Ah that narrows my choice to avenger, sorc, invoker. Can i sacrifice an item or two to get a lvl 9 item josh? That helps the decision making a bit. I got a character that needs a tooth of chaos +2
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on June 29, 2009, 03:17:44 PM
You can trade two items down in level, that's fine.

If you want to trade UP in items I'm inclined to be a bit harsher.  I'm ruling you'll need to sacrifice your two lower level items to get the 9th level guy.  I don't think a level 9 item is particularly unbalancing, but them's the breaks.

That sounds pretty pokemon to me.

We'll play this Friday, 7/10.  I don't foresee any problems with our schedule, so we'll hit every other Friday as normal:

7/10
7/24
8/7
8/21

9/4 is labor day weekend, so we should have a pow-wow about that holiday.  I'm one of the only people who's a transplant, however, and I'm not currently planning to go home over the long weekend.  We should probably discuss it again as it draws nigh.

Wow...someone's bored at work!

I talked about this in the past, but the holidays are always the true test of a campaign because there's necessarily a lot of missed time.  If you have a game that survives the holiday season, then you've got a real campaign.

Since we've already survived one Christmas, well...

That's not a bad idea, m'friend.

I think we wrapped up barely seconds after you left.  It was the final combat of the evening.  The players have secured the gangway into the ruins of the Squallspray and now they're free to proceed as they choose.

I hope you guys like dungeons, because the next three planned games have dungeons.  Maybe dragons too.

im game as long as theres lots of enemies not like the 2-3 big guys since my character is more geared towards minions. i made a sheet so that you can level me up and know what i want and if i leave you can keep on playing and zero simply can become a 2ndry pc or a dm controlled npc ally whichever is fine. my new wish list is on it also ;D have you heard though, psionics are returning... as in enough heads didnt explode last time we hated them

Pretty swollen, are you?  I think most of us have seen it before.

One hit kill magic, to my mind, is very D&D.  Missing out on that kind of magic really changes the feeling of the game, but of course the big problem with it was it was great fun for players to chuck save-or-die spells at monsters BUT it's much less fun to have them chucked back at you.  It's also worth mentioning that more than a few GMs cheated on saves for this kind of thing.  You could never kill the big bad with a save-or-die spell in games like this...most of the time you couldn't even save-or-die kill famous innkeepers.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  4e is a lot of fun, but it's not really D&D.  Missing out on Vancian magic, save-or-die spells, and powerful magic that does big things like animate dead and planeshift...these are big changes.  (Yeah, I know they're there as rituals, but it's not the same at all.)
Title: Re: next game
Post by: VikingWarrior on July 24, 2009, 01:22:49 AM
I agree. The structure is better in 4e but it lacks the creativity of 3.5 thats why im paying 49.99 for the pathfinder rpg. Maybe psionics will have shenanigans. I say they have a 3.5 tribute edition of 1000 ways to die. Bastilla sneak attack, head explosion, brain extraction, death touch at lvl 1, decanter drowning, or my personal favorite: polymorph into fruit by the foot

Speaking of bane. Could i have the "bane" weapon, i forget the name, it had +2 price bonus and gave you the bane property which stacked on any foe who scores a crit on you? I think its fiercebane. In other words if a dwarf scores a crit twice i get +4d6 damage against dwarves for the encounter. Thatd be very nice =)

Hey just in case. I left my map behind yesterday you can leave it in the back and use it just as long as it stays there. So what became of zero and the succubus?
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on July 27, 2009, 01:12:27 PM
The succubus smooched Torgias and made him a love slave.  With his help she escaped.  You didn't really miss much.

I doubt anyone will mess with your map...the store is usually 100% safe.  Of course, you won't be able to sue if someone snatches it...

If you're interested in a fiercebane weapon you can purchase one for book price from Owen, get the wizard to make one for you, or I'll work one in as treasure.

And finally, for the Calablog (or whatever it was called) weapon, I plan to tool it up for 4e and work it in at some point.  Don't hold your breath, though, I'm thinking it's a paragon tier artifact.  ;)

You should stay a defender because you're very good at making my poor monsters die.

And eventually when I get tired of it rocks will fall, and YOU'LL die!

Then you can reroll as whatever...oh yeah.

Wow i just realized... My fighter is a warforged! Bwah hahaha! I just need to retrain and trade with owen to get a +2 vicious executioners axe and im all set. Your succubus better put on an extra thong now! If im allowed to retrain, and maybe pick a cooler name.

Hey since im already on my knees begging... Do we have room for one extra pc to play? Probably not but it was worth a try cuz my friends gotten into dnd and we cant find another campaign. Then again i havent talked to him in a while he may have found one (less awesome than ours obviously) by now. What-evs. As long as i get my murderous axe im happy as a rhode island clam

We follow all the basic rules for retraining, which I think state that you can switch up one of whatever each time you get a level, so you can retrain your weapon proficiency (which I guess is what your after) during your move from 7 -> 8.

As for having a new PC join, I don't think that's gonna go.  Six is the max I want to reasonably handle.  If your friend makes an effort to connect with people at Battlegrounds though, he can probably find some gametime.  Isn't there some sort of living FR thing going on Saturdays?

ok so is it like greyhawk where you just show up or is it something you gotta ask to join? there isnt any more frequent games at bg?

as to my character... im in a clusterf**k about which defender is best still :'( but ill stay my fighter till i die and become a pally again ;D

Bah!  You don't have to worry so much about being the best.  I don't usually try and kill the PCs with the scummiest encounters imaginable, but tonight we're trying something different.

Anyway, I don't know much about living forgotten realms, but I think maybe you can get information on the other D&D boards or ask the group tonight.  I think maybe AJ knows about it...

Josh, i have two quick questions: in the kitchens could one encounter have a duregar shocktrooper in it? Just a cool creature to fight. And can i remakethe swordmaster paragon path to be a axemaster and simply change swords to axes? If not its fine ill stay a kensei. Cant wait to go through a dungeon full of deliscious food with a warrior that doesnt eat food

Change swords to axes?  Hmmmm....it SEEMS reasonable.  Let me get a look at the class and I'll get back to you.

Also, you want to fight a duregar shocktrooper?  I aims to please.  Thus, was created the ARMY.

ok sounds awesome! cant wait for this friday. btw do you know how much paint is at bg for just the armory base primer paint. im way too busy to paint my minis id rather just spray one matte color on. how much is that at bg?
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on August 18, 2009, 12:43:09 PM
I'm not sure how much armory base primer costs at BGs, but I think it goes for retail (I guess 6 bucks or so for a can?).  Really, if you just want to prime a mini or two people will probably lend you a can.

Personally, I use Floquil over armory products, but I'm a paint snob.

Just as a heads up, I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to make it this Friday, but I'm starting to feel hopeful.  I'll let everyone know my schedule by Friday at the latest (probably by Thursday).  Make sure you check the forum to ensure the game is on before you make the trip, unless you wanna make the trip for something else...

Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on August 21, 2009, 10:39:42 AM
Yes, we're definitely playing tonight.  Oh yeah.

Are you putting together a metal model or a plastic model?  I use pretty expensive glues myself (straight up two part epoxy for metal-metal).  If it's a plastic kit you can use model glue from Testor's, the kind you can buy in the models section of any toy department.  Don't use a general purpose glue like Elmer's for any of these applications.

You can save pretty significantly on paint buying a hobby brand like Applebarrel, which you can get from craft stores like Michael's or from places like Wal-Mart.  These last basically forever but they can sometimes suffer pigment separation problems after a few years.  GW brands are still necessary for metallics (never buy a craft brand metallic paint!) and for odd shades that you can't really find in the craft section.  You can also use GW inks.

Lots of people paint and model at the store each week, and they're pretty friendly guys one and all.

I'm not going to have a game on Labor day Friday (9/4/09), so go forth and be free, my young ones!

Our next game will thus be 9/18/09, then 10/2/09 and 10/16/09.

If the store has a holiday event planned for Halloween, we might miss 10/30/09.  We'll have to talk this out later.

Too bad they got rid of the profession skills in 4E.

Imagine the possibilities with a few ranks in cooking:

camel steak; camel stew; camel stirfry; camel burgers, and my personal favorite, camel surprise!

Oh, well... guess we'll have to take an untrained D20 roll on that one.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on September 18, 2009, 11:37:05 AM
I was just thinking about things like profession and craft last night during Steve's game when Bill's halfling started cooking up some porridge.  Not only do these skills not exist, but there's really no reasonable substitute for them.  I guess they were eliminated because they're not all that heroic or important.  You wanna cook some delicious food?  Fine.  Even if you're cooking it for an ostensibly important reason (buffet lunch for the king) you can go ahead and cook it and maybe get a +2 to your diplomacy roll when you try and bargain with the big guy.  You're being rewarded for your ideas in this case.

Yes, we will play tonight.  I plan to kill the cleric first, then the warlord, then the wizard.  Given how incredibly difficult the coming encounters will be, I expect no problems with this endeavor.

That's how the cookie crumbles.

I have to attend the Neuroscience convention in Chicago on 10/17/09 (until Tues or Wednesday of the following week), but I'm not planning on leaving until that Saturday, so our game on 10/16/09 should be fine.  It *should* be, they say, but we'll worry about that when the time comes.

I don't think anyone else loves magic so much that they plan to attend the release tournament, right?

Title: Re: next game

The set would be the next one coming.

Steve always plays in the release (or pre-release) events because they're sealed decks and he gets his cards.  My plan is to go on without him, because we're strong.  And he's weak.

If I don't get sick, that is.  You might want to check this board sometime tomorrow morning just to be sure I don't cancel at the last minute.  I had a cold earlier this week and it's on the mend now, so I plan to go on.  You guys are about 75% or more done with the current dungeon.

Is it just me, or does every room we enter lately seem to have an encounter in it?

Towards the end of the last session, I even purposely tried to look for rooms that seemed likely to contain random loot and no monsters, but to no avail.  Do we just have bad luck?

Certainly it has no relation whatsoever to my abilities as team leader... anyone who disagrees may say so, but risks being roasted alive the next time they sleep.

You're unlucky.  Either that or you suck.

I'll show you the original printout of my adventure key (as well as the dungeon map) if you think I'm cheating your sucking, unlucky self.

Waking up this morning I felt like 10 kinds of warmed up death.  I'm not sure if this feeling will persist, but I might have to cancel.  Let me sit on this feeling for an hour or two and I'll give you my final decision by noon.

(I mean, I'm at work today, which is usually my barometer for whether I can partake of fun activities while ill.)
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on October 02, 2009, 12:34:22 PM
Okay, gang, I'm gonna have to cancel tonight's game.  It seems like my Swecker blood (mother's side) has betrayed me.  That side of the family always has breathing problems and it seems I can't get a cold without getting a minor respiratory infection to go with it.

I first felt ill on Monday and felt worst on Tuesday.  Wed and Thurs were both pretty OK, but this morning I feel something in my trachea and I'm running a fever again.  I wouldn't want to spread it around among y'all.

So, apologies, but I can't make it this Friday.  On the other hand, I've finalized my Chicago trip plans and I'm not leaving until 10/17, so we're fine for 10/16 gaming.  As far as I know, we'll be clear on our schedule clear through until spring, barring holidays.  Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's of course always pose problems.

If you feel you'll be too bored tonight, you can drop by Battlegrounds for the magic release tournament.  I'm not sure if you'll get any promo cards or stuff like that, but the entry fee is usually around $20.  You get your sealed deck product with that and a chance to compete and win a big prize.

Sealed deck tournaments are great because everyone is on equal footing.  Not only that, you get to take home product that's about the same cost retail as the entry fee.  PLUS it's a new set so no one knows the cards any better than you do.  If you like magic at all, I'd advise you to give it a whirl.

It's been kind of an up and down thing, which is odd.  I felt better by Saturday evening and felt worse again Sunday morning.

Guess I'm on the mend now.  I missed a whole week of Kendo, but I hope I can go tonight.  I spent the weekend watching The Office and playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

Ben used to play like Order of the Stick or some other board game when he didn't have the D&D thing together.  We've played the odd game when attendance is low.  I can tell you Rick doesn't like strategy games.  (Though I don't know what you'd call Order of the Stick.)  Tom likes damn near anything.

I've been meaning to buy a few different board games:  Arkham Horror, Quest for Camelot, and some old OOP games.  Maybe I should get them on hand.  That won't help you guys when I cancel on a Friday though.

As always, make sure to check this board after 1:00 ish on Friday if you're at all worried about the game being canceled.  I don't think I've missed keeping my cancellations current yet.  I do get sick from time to time, unfortunately.  :(

http://www.giantitp.com/

The game is basically the boardgame version of the first arc of the comic.

Yes, it really is that insane.

I'm 28 and the only reason why I'm not into 258/2 days myself is because I haven't finished re-chain of memories yet.  Curse you real-time card-based fighting system!  Why is my healing card broken because an enemy on the other side of the map is playing an attack card with a larger number?  WHY!!!!
Title: Re: next game
Post by: gladiator7907 on October 07, 2009, 09:10:17 PM
358/2 makes kingdom hearts 2 actually make perfect sense (almost)
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on October 08, 2009, 03:22:33 PM
I was talking about board games, m'self.

I'm not a fan of kingdom hearts.  It's way out there on the weird-o-meter and I found the gameplay in the original to be repetitive and lacking strategy.  They took Zelda and added RPG elements and somehow lost the magic of both.  The whole disney licensing thing was weird too, I thought.  In general though I think my REAL problem with the game is I've developed a real aversion to these squaresoft, uber-stylized, belts & chains & odd colors & girly men & menly girls characters over the past few years.

I haven't made any new game purchases in a while, the last one I bought was Blazblue.  I'm seriously considering buying Brutal Metal at release, though, and Dragon Age is a must buy.

I'm sure there are other games this fall I'm looking forward to, but I don't know what ATM.

I spent my sick days watching The Office and playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3.  Heroes worked well as a sick game...not demanding and if you pass out the game is still there.

nope the 16th (next week) AJ.
sadly... i dont have the attention span to play a video game based on cards that make chains that dont make sense, which is why the entire story-line to chain of memories is in the instruction booklet of 358/2
by the way i saw order of the stick, WTF??? ???
Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on October 09, 2009, 03:52:36 PM
Order of the Stick (or OOTS) is Dnd 3.5 taken to its cliched extreme.  The characters in the comic have an understanding of how the dnd ruleset works, and talk about it to point out some of the more amusing quirks in the system.

Personal favorite exchange (paraphrased, because I don't have time to look it up right now)

Nale: So what class are you?

Elan: A bard.

Nale: My dad always told me that bards are pretty whimpy and underpowered.

Elan: So what are you then?

Nale: A fighter/rouge/sorcerer that focuses on enchantment spells.

Elan: And that never struck you as needlessly complicated?

Nale: ...Not until this moment, no.

Also interesting is the attitudes of Roy and that female paladin they introduce in the 2nd arc.  Both are lawful good, but interact with non-good characters in very different ways.  (The heart of good roleplaying)

Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on October 14, 2009, 10:31:26 AM
Dissidia is like a completely different game.  In Final Fantasy 1, you form a party of four characters from six classes.  None of them have any spoken lines in the game.  You can consider the entire party one silent protagonist.

Does it sound primitive?  It is.  The game was released in 1987, which was more than 20 years ago at this point.

If you played the original Final Fantasy I doubt you'd love it.  RPGs have come a long way since back then.  Still, Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior (1986) were big steps forward and are much more similar to modern RPGs (particularly if you've played stuff like Chrono Trigger or FFIV or something on the DS).  These two games are generally credited with crystalizing the JRPG genre, but JRPGs have definitely taken a turn for the sugoi kawaii~~ since back then.

You can look at the evolution of RPGs in general as a primitive RPGs => Ultima & Wizardry => Dragon Warrior/Quest & FF sort of evolution.

Alright, are people OK with playing on 10/30?  Is there some big halloween function going on that night?

Here would be our regular schedule:

10/30
11/13
11/27 (Day after Thanksgiving...I'm sure many are unavailable)
12/4
12/18
1/1 (I'm probably OK with that...if the store is open)

Dave has suggested we play THIS friday (Tomorrow, 10/23) but I'm not open for that day, unfortunately.  I think Steve can't switch up the week either.

I will not be arriving until around 7.  Depending on when our esteemed DM gets there, this may make me slightly late.  I created 3 character builds; in order of preference:

-Human Fighter
-Dwarf Warden
-Gnome Paladin

Being my typical lazy inattentive self, I haven't put the finishing touches on these characters yet (specifically equipment) but that'll get taken care of once I decide which to use.

Bill:  Mega-heal cleric
Dave:  Druid (I guess...)
Rick:  Looking like a fighter.
AJ:  Sorcerer
Tom:  Ranger

That's it.

I doubt we'll play on Black Friday.  Next week should be hunky dory though.  This works out well, because we'll finish the level 1 adventure/story arc next week and then come back for the next part in December.

I imagine we'll finish the 2nd part of the prologue adventure just before christmas, which means after we come back following the holidays we'll be ready for the paragon tier.

Hope people are enjoying things.  If you have suggestions for the game, I'm all ears.

I like to go around to big box stores about 10 am, but I avoid the doorbusters.

Around 10, things are getting pretty quiet and they still have huge stocks of DVDs and CDs and games and things.  The doorbuster items are almost always gone by that time, but I don't shop for those anyway.

Both Steve and Tom are OK with playing on black friday, and I'm leaning towards wanting to play that day m'self.  Rick, Bill, and AJ...I'm wondering if you're still good on that day?

Let me know, dude.

I don't have work that day, so Black Friday doesn't bother me at all.

I'll definitely have to start picking up food on the way though.  That Kam's rice has taken a major nosedive lately.

Title: Re: next game

I'm not a big fan of Kam's lately either.  If you're gonna order there, ask Steve to get your junk for you.  Everytime he gets that stuff it looks GREAT.  I think he's nailing the waitress or something.

There's a chinese restaurant just down the road from Kam's...near the Tadeski's and Subway down there:

Asia Kitchen
945 Bedford St
Abington, MA 02351-1202
(781) 982-8118

I actually keep a menu for this joint in my car so I can call as I'm leaving my house, but since they don't have a menu you can probably just call them up and order your fried rice, then pick up a menu the first time they visit.  Someone in Battlegrounds originally recommended this place to me and I'd have to say, overall the quality is much better than Kam's.  Kam's always rules the roost in value though.   And I guess it's good if Steve places the order.

Alright, though the players are on board with the Black Friday game I don't think I can escape familial obligations on that day, so I have to call it.  I'll make it up to you by writing a really awesome adventure though.  I'm looking forward to it.

We need to think about the upcoming holiday schedule.  Missing black Friday, our games break down like this:

12/11
12/25 (!! Christmas)
01/08
01/22

12/11 is fine for me.  There's no way in HELL I can play on Christmas, and I imagine everyone else feels the same on that.  After that, we should be in a regular 2 week rotation.

You should make a character at 5th level to join the group.  I plan to update the little plot points thread I made sometime shortly, if I can stop playing Dragon Age when I'm home long enough to do it.

sounds good see you on next friday definitly. our group seems to be a dominating force of strikers backed by a super healer and (assuming) a super defender, so ill play a deva avenger so tom and i didnt fight for dual wielding weapons ;D
btw billy, you played one before any avenger tips bud ???
Title: Re: next game
Post by: cursedchidori on December 04, 2009, 12:18:10 AM
avengers are fun, depends on how you want to play it, i went the high ac through the roof and maneuverability, thats where the elf avenger came in, can shift through difficult terrain and almost all the pursuing avengers abilitys let you shift, theres also the other one from phb2 (cant think of it right now which punishes enemys when you get hit. theres also the one from divine power but i havent looked into that myself so i cant really give an opinion on it.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: skavengear on December 04, 2009, 11:30:10 AM
right now im retribution. the dp build gives you +1 damage for each adjacent ally which isnt really any better than retribution for an intelligence build. my feats are:
executioners axe prof.
feat that adds my racial powers rolll to damage
and feat that makes the roll d8s for my racial power.
ill be in cloth for a while because next feat is oath strike, then i was going leather then imp.  armor of faith
sound any good?

01/08/10
01/22/10
02/05/10

Title: Re: next game

I came here for the express purpose of talking about snow.  The snow today and this evening is not supposed to be bad at all, so I don't anticipate any problems.  However, if we do have a blizzard moving forward into the winter I'll cancel the game, because Josh does not drive in the snow.

In general if I'm going to call a game you'll be able to see here in the forums on that Friday.  I'll have cancellations up by lunch time.

That's how I'll handle it if I'm sick or get shot or anything like that as well.

On game days when we don't have enough people to play we'll probably arrange other entertainments.  Boardgames and such.  In the past we gave item rewards and the like for participating in these non-D&D events.  On days when it snows and I decide not to go because I'm a wimp, if everyone ELSE goes and you guys are willing to vouch that fun was had by all, I can give item rewards for that too.

this is for the debate rick, aj, and i were having over the tarrasques hp:

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/tarrasque.htm

it has 48d10+594 hit dice and the suggested hp is 858 so my ardent dealing 449d6+1d4+5 damage almost 84.6% of the time will one hit kill it (at least in 3.5)

maybe deep crystal weapons wont exsist ever in 4e just as a safe measure or psionics will get broken again.

Title: Re: next game
Post by: skavengear on January 13, 2010, 08:05:40 PM
haha i did no crunching the site i posted does it all. u put in attack and damage mods and it tells you everything. the damage is because a 20th level ardent has 343 power points and 100 from high wisdom and deep crystal allows as an unlimited times per day free action to pay 2 power points to deal 2d6 extra damage on my next attack. so 448pp -> 448d6 damage. i know it sounds ridiculous but hey psionics also stop you from breathing, stop your heart, and make your brain explode. haha
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on January 14, 2010, 04:37:42 PM
Ah, so instead you want to ruin it for all of the kids who play nice with psionics.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Lykosan on January 15, 2010, 09:29:37 AM
My solution to that was rather easy as a DM. The person that built the psionics character to do that usually hated it since an exact copy of a single target killer type came at them from the side of the road or an innn or wherever since you wouldn't see the attack and only he would know what was going on. Or like I did one time when the entire party was annoying me with the broken builds and such, everyone BUT the psionics char had a single target killer go for them one at a time. Psionics is perfectly fine to use in any game as long as the people using it aren't douches with the mechanic.
Title: Re: next game

Like most mechanics.  Psionics make it easy to create a single-target killer, but it can be done with many different classes and builds.  Single-target killers break a lot of home-brew campaigns because there aren't so many combats.  When you've just got one big fight during a given rest cycle, it's easy enough to slaughter the boss monster and ruin the game.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: skavengear on January 17, 2010, 11:49:15 AM
i wasnt being douchey (although the build was rather smelly) ive actually only done that build once for a lvl 20 arrena game friends did. if i did do a psionic in a serious campaign id probablly go soulknife since they are by far the most balanced adn dms are most likely not going to stop them. the most broke they are is if the whole party gets tied up i can make a swiss army knife with my mind haha

i doubt 4th ed will ever make a truly "broken" build. just really fun ones ;D
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on January 19, 2010, 12:26:05 PM
There've been some fairly sick things found already, but they tend to errata them out, which is good.

My favorite psionic build was that pyro prestige class.  I'm hoping we see something like that in 4e.

fighter
red mage
white mage
black mage

You need to get the airship.

Then you can fly to this little island around the top center of the map.

And you'll find some dude there who will upgrade your characters if you give him the rat tail.  The rat tail is really easy to find.

one of our upcoming games is the day before the mega battle does this interfere with the game (i know its a huge ordeal getting ready for order to win) just throwing a heads up since 50% of the party plays 40k ;D
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on February 22, 2010, 05:49:47 PM
I don't think the mega battle will interfere with our game...most people already have their standing armies for the MB.  My impression of the entire affair is you really shouldn't take it too seriously.  (Probably a good rule of thumb for GW games in general).

There are *lots* of kendo events and PAX coming up, but looking at the calendar I see no earthly reason why these things should interfere with our game schedule either.  Thus, the days going forward as near as I can make them are:

Mar  5
Mar  19
April 2
April 16
April 30
May 14
May 28

sounds good. id participate in the megabattle, but thatd mean painting 4000pts of models. too much effort on my behalf. unless you consider plastic and pewter as colors ;D

just a little off topic: is there going to be a fifth role added to striker defender leader controller?
or what the hell is the runepriest going to be? it seems like there might be cross-source classes coming soon. (we got a glimpse of it with mp2's warlock/fighter paragon path)

Great game on friday i might actually pick up red dragon inn myself. unfortunatelly the battlemind vs runepriest debate still rages. so, since rick wants to die and make a monk (which means id make the battlemind) and billy im pretty sure wanted to do something broken with an archery ranger (which means id make the runepriest) im just gonna leave this post and see who wants to die more to choose my class. also im going to post a brief build on each if people wana take votes (thiese are honestly the most difficult to choose classes ever, i honestly might stick to these for the rest of 4e ;D)

I'd wager the result you'll get is just to play what you want.

I had some time to look over PHB3 and while I'd agree the feats aren't really game-busting (there are some nice feats though), the new skill-powers and the hybrid classes are kinda bad ass.  Monster Manual 3 can't come soon enough.

I like the feel of both the psion and the monk.  I'd say the new class I dislike is the seeker, which feels powerful to me.  It's a very strikery kind of controller and I'm not sure how it fits.  One thing I really feel is they gave us even less reason to play a druid.  The seeker does what the druid does but he deals more damage as he does it and he does it from afar.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: skavengear on March 08, 2010, 10:58:22 AM
i personally liked the psion too josh, but the area of effect spells were what i liked and they all would have really fucked with the party too. i want to play them so equally i feel id rather have someone tell me then have to choose. methinks rick will want to die alot more than bill but, you never know...

the runepriest has some beefy prayers and overall is good, radiant damage gets real useful against most stronger targets and i add a crap load of damage to the party. the battlemind is only broken when basically i act like a striker (singling out the strongest enemy and marking him) since most of the powers focus on the opponent suffering from its own stuff. only thing broken is i can make that lich my "bich" by using 6 times the at will "hit youself with a melee basic" power.

i really need someone to say "you play that one!" haha :D

i really dont think the druid was ever to broken in any edition, it was meant as a fun roleplaying element for PETA members

Normally yes, we'd go boldly forward.

HOWEVER, Steve is being overworked and under-compensated and isn't sure if he'll make it, and I have a cold.  I'm not going to cancel the game just yet, but you should check this space sometime after lunch (by 1:00 pm) tomorrow and I'll give you the final word on whether we're playing or not.

If anyone else knows they can't make it, now would be the appropriate time to let me know.  I really don't want to do the next adventure unless we have at least 5 people (the majority of the players).

See you tomorrow I hope.

That's funny in an odd god-I-hate-puns sort of way.

I've had a cold almost literally the entire winter.  I think I've discovered the hidden cost of commuting via the T.  From now on I'm getting a parking pass and driving to work.

Anyway, I'm leaning very much towards a cancellation.  It's not that I'm terribly sick, but I have a cough and difficulty talking and I'm not sure I want to shout down the magic players all night long.

So again, if anyone besides Steve is considering some other obligation, now's not a bad time to make it known and take the cancellation blame off of me.  :)

I'm sorry to be thinking of canceling, gang.  I know we haven't actually gamed in a while.  It's like the holiday season all over again.

Darn.

Guess I'll spend the night playing FFXIII.

Oh, who am I kidding?  I'll be watching as FFXIII plays itself.  That's all it ever does anyway.

(Seriously; most people hated the Gambit system in FFXII, so they replaced it with one that's even more restrictive?  At least I don't need a special license to wear a hat anymore.  Of course, that's because they eliminated hats, and armor, and choice, and fun...)

Sorry about the cancellation, Rick, but looking back on it I'm convinced it was the right call.  My voice didn't really recover until Sunday, but I'm still getting questions from people at work of, "Why are you still here?"

Personally, I like the paradigm system a *lot* more than gambits, and I'm digging FFXIII more than any final fantasy game to come along in a while.  Here are what I think are the biggest strengths:

Problems with the game include:

Personally, I think the paradigm system works well but during the game's long introduction combat can be kind of a drag.  It's not until your characters get more meaningful abilities and access to a variety of roles and the enemies require more strategy to defeat that the combat system starts to cook.  For me I think that was about the 8 to 10 hour mark (!!).

I'm not convinced that the paradigm system is somehow better than a more traditional menu system (FFX probably implemented this best), but it *is* punchy and action-packed.  The real problem with the system in my mind is there's no way to quickly select a single ability and use it on an appropriate target.  I came across this problem last night.  Lightning has ATB four and can script four actions.  One of my party members (let's say it's Snow) has a bad status ailment.  I want to use esuna to cure him, and esuna takes two actions.

If I let Lightning auto-heal, she'll usually get everyone in the party up to something like 90% of their max hit points before ever scripting an esuna.  The same thing with her raise, I've found.  However, if I want to manually script a single esuna in there, I can't simply use half of Lightning's actions to script...I need to fill the whole ATB bar *before* the game lets me pick my target.  If I press the button to immediately execute the actions in the ATB bar, Lightning will go to the last target she had.  In my case, Lightning had been auto-healing Hope when Snow got Dazed or something.  I scripted an esuna and immediately punched the execute button, but Lightning then dropped her esuna on the non-status-affected Hope.  I had to script 4 ATB actions worth of junk to get my esuna on Snow, so I just went with Esuna-esuna.

I suppose you can try to esuna-esuna, cancel after the first esuna hits with an immediate paradigm shift or manual cancel, then go to a different role and lay some beatdown, but I don't like the fact that I have to script a full ATB bar worth of actions to pick my target.  Guess it's a minor complaint.

The real fun in the combat system is effectively timing your paradigm shifts for maximum efficiency, which does indeed mean switching roles in the middle of a set of ATB actions.

I'm up for some 3.5 rather than miss out on DnD for three straight sessions.

What are the guidelines for making a character?

(btw, I call monk, so there :P)
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on March 30, 2010, 11:38:54 AM
Yeah, I was coming in here to say that we'll have to cancel due to lack of participation.  Bill, Tom, and now Dave are out.  That leaves Rick, Steve, AJ, and myself.

I'd probably be up to do something else...3.5 or board games.  I just got a new game I'd like to try.

Oh something new huh? What is it? What is it?
Title: Re: next game
Post by: skavengear on March 30, 2010, 01:18:47 PM
id be down for some 3.5 either after this campaign or other as long as my heart permits me to, im pretty much on death watch, but i feel fine.  when is our next game since a week in the hospital has completely warped my concept of time?

if we did do 3.5 dibs on ninja (if allowed)
im a ninja ninja ninja. believe it!!! ;D

as for 4e being in a hospital bed bored as F*** i have made pretty much a 10th level character of every class (how will i ever choose) its still down to either avenger or the battlemind.

btw ff13, does the game ever let you actually play? ive seen videos of gameplay and it seems as if theres about 3min of gameplay for every 5-10min of cutscene or full out movie.  not sure i want to let that game get my 60 bucks yet...
Title: Re: next game
Post by: THEgeek on March 30, 2010, 11:53:33 PM
for the 3.5
-any class from phb1
-human please
-level 2

and if possible steve could i borrow the mat if you are going to be there
Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on March 31, 2010, 12:20:09 AM
Tell us about this 'new game' Josh...

FF13 is not worth 60 bucks, period.
Rent it if you really want to play it.  Since it is so linear the stores will soon fill with used copies if you wanted to own one later.  I heard some Japanese game stores won't even let you trade in used copies anymore over there.  Even with a price at the equivalent of $20 they still won't sell.

My complaint wasn't that there was 3 min of game to 10 min of cutscene (hell, I love the Metal Gear series) but that there was almost 0 min of gameplay to be found in the whole thing.

(btw, who designed the spellcheck utility for this board app?  It doesn't recognize 'cutscene', 'gameplay' or even 'spellcheck' itself!)
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on March 31, 2010, 10:35:45 AM
So many things to respond to.  I disagree with Rick about FF13, but it really seems I'm in the minority.  Most people think it's okay at best.  I like it plenty.  I'd agree with Rick on this though, it's a game that sold brajillions of copies and at this point I'd wait for the price drop if you haven't already bought it.  Most games are only worth full price if you get them right at release.  So many of them quickly drop to at least $40.

The game I have is called Shadow Hunters.  It's a pretty simple card game and you can play a round in a short period of time.  There's no reason we can't play a few rounds of it.

AJ, you want us to generate 3.5 characters of 2nd level?  Rick is playing a monk, eh?  Guess I'll be a druid again.  I'm liking druids.

For my own game, I really don't plan on stopping until epic tier at least.  I've got plans to go that far.  Depending on how things roll out it could go a little shorter or longer, but I'm perfectly happy for someone else to GM if they wanna.

Post by: jbkilroy on April 15, 2010, 05:30:16 PM
I certainly hope so.  Between the game that never was, the random game night, and the 3.5 night, I'm not sure what was going on in the campaign anymore.

...we were on a boat (or ship, whatever) and we were chasing after Eric Blacktree, who returned to life after being decapitated (Ninja Scroll style) and there was time pressure because of some kind of ritual, or something... on some island (hence the boat).

There was also something about the capital 'P' Prophecy that we were involved in, but I never understood that part.  Though to be fair, my character wouldn't have understood it either so I don't hold it against me.

Hey rick are you planning on "not dying"  to play youre monk? haha  ;)
Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on April 16, 2010, 09:59:34 AM
I would never suicide a character just to make a new one; I have my pride you know!   ;)

Besides, in Josh's campaigns my character has the highest survivabilty rate.  My wizard hid from the potato lich for a looooong time after the rest of you shuffled off their mortal coil.

However, if my melee-based meat shield should happen to meet his maker (which has been known to happen to various characters...  :o) then I would make the monk next.  I just like the idea of someone who can beat a master wizard/fully armored knight/giant monster with their bare hands.

That gives me an idea... maybe my monk should fight naked.  As some kind of vow or something.  That would definitely make the game more interesting, especially depending on what gender I play.

Anyhoo, I'm hoping I won't have to worry about that any time soon.  (And by this point maybe some of you are hoping you won't have to either.  All the more reason to watch my back, I suppose).

Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on April 27, 2010, 03:57:51 PM
'tactical squad'?

I assume we're playing, since I haven't heard otherwise.

Hey, for everyone who shows up early I want to get some Paranoia going.  The learning curve for people who don't understand how the game works is... amusing (especially for the person running it:me).

If you're interested, just show up.  Don't bother reading any rules, since displaying rules knowledge beyond your clearance level, even out of game, is treason!  Then again, asking questions about the game may also be treason, depending on the subject...   You want a list of treasonous subjects?  What was your clearance level again, citizen?   MWA-HA-HA!!!   :P
Title: Re: next game
Post by: skavengear on April 27, 2010, 04:08:30 PM
ok, i should be there around 7.  as for tactical squad, i have finally been assimilated into the vast army of people at bg who play 40k, and made a "minor mistake" in army building, which left me with one model who could score objectives so i gotta buy the squad so i can attempt to win games.

ill be willing to play any game, even ones where i waste 10 pages of paper, 3.5 hours, and all self respect i had on ;D

Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on April 28, 2010, 10:30:02 AM
If I recall correctly, there are 3 parts to the character sheet.

-The stuff that you and the other players know about your character
-The stuff that only you (hopefully) know about your character, but the other players do not
-The stuff that only the GM knows about your character, and even you are unaware

The book comes with some sample pre-gen characters, so it would probably be easiest to start there.

As for 40k, it's just something i never see myself getting into:

#1 You have to think too hard and too far ahead
#2 You need to use basic math and geometry (see #1)
#3-40K  It costs lots of $$$$ (and time, but mostly the $$$$).

Good luck though.  At least if one of your 40k characters dies, you're already all set for immediate vengeance.

I've been thinking about having Paranoia as a 'subsidiary' subsidiary game.

Rather than have it be played during the off weeks, we can use it to flesh out our regular game weeks.

Not only does it provide those of us who show up hours early with something to do, in those instances when we can't have a regular DnD game (no Josh, not enough people) the nature of Paranoia makes it very easy to integrate/remove players from the game.

If people think this is a good idea, I'll create a new topic with Paranoia information players are (probably) allowed to know about.
Title: Re: next game
Post by: skavengear on May 06, 2010, 06:23:34 PM

Kewl.  On weeks when we're missing too many people and we can't play D&D, I'll give out some rewards for people who participate in paranoia.  (Stuff like I've done before, alchemy items and potions and things.)

Btw, althrough rather ironic since I just kicked off the pre-DnD Paranoia game, I may or may not be late this week.  My cousin is visitng from CA, and I don't really know yet what we'll be doing or where/when we'll be doing it.

I will do my best to be there early enough for Paranoia, but it might not happen.

On an unrelated note, I'm going to start wrapping up around 11 pm on Fridays, so I'm hoping we can get started by 8:00 pm at the latest.  In the past, our official start time has been 7:00 pm but I never can seem to make it there exactly at that time.  Sometimes Tom doesn't get out of work until a little after seven as well.

Title: Re: next game
Post by: jbkilroy on June 25, 2010, 03:30:19 PM
I know; I've been following the new one since last year.

I like that they are consciously trying to emulate the first game and ignore the second one, but some things concern me.  The limitations of the original XBOX was one of the biggest issues with the first game.  Console/PC simultaneous design is not as big of an issue as it used to be, but it does hurt flexibility, plus the PC port tends to always get the short end of the stick.  Also, some of the design decisions they've already announced (regenerating health, wtf!) are troubling.

A lot of people are excited about the CG trailer that SE debued around E3 but the actual game won't have any pre-rendered cutscenes in it, so that makes the video pretty pointless.  (Unless of course you are excited by the very idea of stabbing people to death with your elbows).

Still; they didn't go the way of Duke Nukem Forever, so that's something.

I think it's the lack of a regular start time that kills us more.  But with people's schedules being fluid I don't know what we can really do about it week to week.

Rick is sad panda.   :'(

Totally unrelated note; I got RDR for the xbox in case anyone wants to ride with me.  At the very least it'll make it harder for the level 50s to grief-kill me over and over...

Took me a while to get back to the thread but Rick is right, it's hard to have a hard start time when people are coming after work, etc.

I think we should try to keep it as close to 7:00  pm as we can, but some delays can't be avoided.  I think I need to be more careful about when we start combats and things.  Last week, we went right until 11 pm and the big combat started around 9 pm IIRC.

i save time by charging head on into the boss encounters (skarlo, i live for you to take the credit)  ;D

a small rules issue i just thought about which is a RAW vs RAI issue: if an avenger wields a weapon with the reach property and strikes his oath target with nobody adjacent to the avenger, does he still get the extra attack roll or must he be adjacent?

the reason i ask is because the RAW would mean i cannot because you must be adjacent, but the RAI means i am hitting my oath and nobody is around to impede me so wouldnt that be the intended use is to get you to single out your oath and keep other enemies at bay.

not that i think i will use a reach weapon with this avenger, but you never know and its still a pretty decent thought to ponder; even with dark sun killing all the divine power sourced classes (which turns out are the ones that piss off gms the most).

Dark Sun is sounding better and better.

I'll have to read up on the Avenger rules.  *I'd* argue that if they haven't issued errata for the particular issue you're referring to, then adjacent foe is working as intended.  After all the, class has a lot of ways to close with foes and punish them for moving away.

But then theres no avenger to destroy all your cool monsters josh  :'(

im interested in the way the weapons have materials again (or maybe it was just fluff for dnd encounters) and how there are new class features coming out. thrikeen are awesome, mul just seem like they got the bad end of the batch, just like all the new races in phb3, that were either weak, or had a stronger alternative to their ability bonuses (giving a bonus to con and wis is a terrible idea, since dwarves have that nailed down and are a more iconic dnd race, just like elves and dex/wis bumps)
Title: Re: next game

The weapons in the Dark Sun preview I did at PAX had materials.  The GM of the session went to some length to describe how the materials worked and what the benefits were.  I don't remember the details exactly, but if you missed there were opportunities to re-roll your attacks and break your weapons based on their materials.

Anyway, we're gaming this Friday and I wanted to get some opinions on future directions.  I'm thinking of running Tomb of Horrors by incorporating it into the current game and story arc.  Fighting the Blood of Vol would work well with the Tomb I think, and the dungeon is split into several mini-adventures, so we'd have chances to do other adventures between visits to the Tomb.  Are you players interested in this?

I would be for it if only to tell people afterwards "yeah, I totally owed the TOMB OF HORRORS" and then leave the conversation before they managed to ask which version of the ToH I was talking about.

Never ventured into the classic version myself, but from a review I read there were incredibly lethal traps guarding dead-end passages, high level encounters coming out of nowhere, and in the end almost no treasure or items to justify the risk.  Kinda miss the good old days, don't you?

Random aside of the day: Have you ever watched South Park with the captions on?  I don't know if they still do it this way, but I remember an early episode when they were trapped on a mountain.  When Cartman tells the story of Scuzzlebutt (sp?) The word 'Scuzzlebutt' in the captions was a larger font, colored red and was flashing.  I thought it was funny that they would bother to include a gag that 99% of the audience would never see.

Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on August 05, 2010, 12:55:42 PM
Well, we'll just run ToH then.

From what I can read on the internet it's much more monster encounters...some puzzles.  Very few traps.  There are some pretty awful ways to die, but it's nothing like the original tomb.  I don't think modern audiences would respond well to the original tomb, and 4e is much more about balance.

Something I suppose we could do is run Tomb of Horrors 2nd or 3rd ed. as an introduction, it makes sense as the new supplement picks up at the end of the original tomb series.  We can talk about this more on Friday.

we definitly should do a 3.5 old tomb game, but use the pathfinder instead of phb (theyre almost identical just the PC races and classes are fixed, for example all paladin abilities are charisma controlled now. also nice new class features and general improvements made to much) as the intro to our campaigns tomb of horrors. this would please me greatly  ;D

i might break my record of 8 character deaths too  ::)

if we did do it mes haf dibs on paladin, me likey smiting the weak-willed

I was reading a little bit about the ToH yesterday (it has its own entry on Wikipedia, if you can believe that) and it's worse than I remembered.

Apparently some of the 'classic' versions had traps that could instantly kill... with no saving throw...

Gary Gygax, who created the original module, said he did it to challenge the high level players in his own campaign who believed their characters were invincible (as well as to create bragging rights for those who survived, like I said before).

And in a KODT meets DnD moment, it seems one of the more effective techniques to beating the dungeon is using herds of cattle to set off all the traps beforehand.   Hmmm...  *scribbles down some notes*

New thread up for the Tomb of Horrors (http://www.battlegroundgames.com/forum/index.php?topic=1632.0).  This should prove to be fun and it won't be nearly as long a hiatus as I expected.  We're running the official 3.5 conversion of the original tomb, which is available from WotC as a free download.

Well, Steve called and he's out for the 3rd, which is the Friday before Labor Day.  I'm not going to start without the full party, so we'll have to postpone our first session in Tomb of Horrors.  Does anyone else have plans?  Should we meet up anyway and do something else?  We could play one of Jay's board games, or Rick could run Paranoia.  Or something.

I'll run Paranoia if everyone wants to try it.

Since it has been so long since we last played, I will either have to scrap the old plotline or change it into something else.  Don't worry AJ and Dave I'll bump you up a security level or something to reward past participation.

Say... not to be 'Paranoid' (pun intended) but has anyone been following the incoming hurricane?  Sounds like it might be hitting this area around Friday night.  We should keep an eye on the storm (pun not intended) to see what we want to do.

Further details as events warrant.

Yeah, the storm will be blowing through.

For myself, I'm hoping we can get a rough head count over the next few days so I can perhaps determine if I want to make the trip to BGs.  I think I live further out than anyone at this point.  (Unless Rick is traveling from home...  :)  )

hey josh, did you say we were aloud to play psionic stuff so long as we didn't break the game with say... 351d6 damage  ::)

if so my next character in line is going to be a thri-kreen monk (only to port it over to 4e) so is it just a thri-kreen monk 7 or is this edition the one i have to take two levels in monster class - thri-kreen?
Title: Re: next game
Post by: Guu on September 29, 2010, 10:37:47 AM
I'm pretty sure if you make a thri-kreen monk you'll need to take the monster class levels.  There's a level adjustment for that race.  But I don't have the MM in front of me so I couldn't say for sure.
