It actually sounds amazing, kind of like a more role-playing / epic storyline for 40k.

Also somewhat reminds me of Necromunda, at least for the upgrading aspect.

I think it would be a lot of fun to try out!
Reality is a cruel and unintuitive place with rather frustrating game-play mechanics.

I remember trying this years ago when it was in white dwarf.  It was a lot of fun.  The squad sizes, bosses, etc... will need to be tinkered with to work with the new codexes.  Since they were writen every army has had one or more new codexes, so points, stats, and special rules may have changed and/or units may no longer exist (Last Chancers).
