Ban Spam
« on: June 14, 2011, 11:03:58 AM »
I just had a quick questing regarding all the spam we have been receiving. Is it possible to make it so when you create an account it has to be approved by either Chase of Derek?

I believe there will be a new set of forums when the new website comes along. So some of the spam issue is likely to disappear. But it's impossible to eradicate forever.

I find that it's very discouraging to people to have to wait before they are approved to post.  I know I can't stand it.

Normally when I sign up it's because I've got something I really want to say.

The spam has been relentless lately, but it comes in waves.  We will see a week of this crap and then nothing (or almost nothing) for months.

One effective way I've seen is having one of those weird codes that follow certain posts on forums.  It's alpha-numeric, and can be case sensitive.  I don't know how hard it'd be to start using one of those, but I think that'll help with weeding out spammers too, not to mention it wouldn't require Derek or Chase's constant approval for posting.

Typing in a code for *every* post? You could start something like that in forum registration process.

They have to enter a pretty fancy code to register, but they seem to be able to "beat" it pretty easily.

I could get around that alphanumeric image like nothing nowadays, I mean every day someone wants to make my penis bigger or give me a million dollars via email, can't you just man up and ignore it? Chase is pretty good about cleaning it up.

There's lots of ways to enact measures to "prevent" spam but none of them are perfect, even when combined together.  No matter whether you have a blog or a forum or whatever other type of Web 2.0 interactive online setup spammers try to get in and usually do, eventually.
