So I might run a Battle Box tournament on 3/18...
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:43:13 PM »
How do you guys feel about something like this?

I wouldn't require players to buy a Battle Box, but I would require them to use Battle Box lists or alternate lists.

I think it's a great idea. I won't be able to play. I have a St Patty's Day party to attend :)

But the St. Patrick's Day is the day before? Can you not hold your liquor or something?

I was under the impression that PP had posted alternative Battle Box lists somewhere.

I guess I'm probably mistaken.

Here's what they list in the Journeyman rules.  Are these balanced around the Battle Boxes?

Protectorate of Menoth (Two-Player Battle Box Alternative)
High Exemplar Kreoss, Vanquisher, Crusader, Repenter

Retribution of Scyrah
Kaelyssa the Night’s Whisper, Manticore, Griffon, Chimera

Mercenaries (Four Star Syndicate Option 1)
Magnus the Traitor, Mangler, Renegade, Talon

Mercenaries (Four Star Syndicate Option 2, Searforge Commission, Highborn Covenant Option 1)
Gorten Grundback. Ghordson Driller, Grundback Gunners x3

Mercenaries (Four Star Syndicate Option 3, Highborn Covenant Option 2, Talion Charter)
Captain Bartolo Montador, Mariner, Freebooter, Buccaneer

Minions (Thornfall Alliance)
Lord Carver, War Hog, Gun Boar x2

Minions (Blindwater Congregation)
Bloody Barnabas, Blackhide Wrastler, Ironback Spitte

Since those factions don't have battle boxes those are the pp official ones. For league and tourney play.

Those are the Official battleboxes for the factions that don't have battleboxes. Menoth is there because the 'jacks in the 2 player kit are different than the battlebox.

So, between the actual packaged battleboxes and that list you have all the official PP battleboxes.

I love the idea... not necessarily sold on the date, I'll have to check.  If the buy in is cheap, my Cygnar battlebox is well-painted, and may just be ready to rock!

As an argument for "cheap" buy in, I'll say that battle box games are usually for beginners (or those who haven't played in a long while, i.e. me), shorter in duration, and open to wild chance as much as solid tactics.  Small buy-in with a smaller prize let's more people play and leaves them enough money to buy something new for their army after all the fun they had...

Maybe only $10 instead of the normal $15? I'm guessing this would be a pretty small event, and since we're effectively talking about a 12pt tournament it's going to go by quick.
