Join us for Battleground’s Fat Pack Challenge is for Khans of Tarkir!

Khans of Tarkir (KTK) will be released on Friday, September 26th and we will have a full line-up of events for you to crack packs, build decks and play Magic at both of our stores!  The weekend will kick off with our flagship Sealed Deck style event.

The Battleground Fat Pack Challenge is taking place on Friday night, 9/26/14, at both locations (run as our FNM).  These are the ultimate sealed events – where you open packs, build a deck and play with just the contents of an Khans of Tarkir Fat Pack!

The concept of a Fat Pack Challenge is pretty simple.  Each player will receive an Khans of Tarkir Fat Pack with which to build a 40 card deck.  Players may use ONLY what is inside of their Fat Pack to construct their decks.  No additional land will be provided!

This time around we’ll be awarding the prizes a little differently than before.  During the deck building period, each player that enrolled in the event will receive 1 raffle ticket.  An additional raffle ticket will be awarded to players for every match they win.  Raffle tickets will be pooled throughout the event.

Battleground will do several drawings each round.  If your ticket is drawn you’ll win 3 booster packs of Khans!  We know you’ll want to open as much of this set as possible, so we’ve got you covered.

The booster pack raffle will be accompanied by other random giveaways that might include playmats, pins, and tshirts.

This week in Magic: Fat challenges, fat packs

This has been one of the craziest weeks of my life. If all goes right, hopefully it will get even crazier with the Fat Pack Challenge that is coming up this Friday. How many of you have been to the Fat Pack Challenge before? Okay. Well you’re in or  treat. As the name implies, instead of having the usual six packs for a sealed event, we’re using Fat Packs – which have nine packs.

M15_Fat_Pack

You would think that there would be little difference between six packs and nine packs. However, this is a huge difference. It is makes for quite the challenge. Hence : “Fat Pack Challenge.” More options basically mean more decisions to make. If you asked me which would I prefer? It’s really nice having to make decisions than no decisions.

When I last talked about the Fat Pack Challenge, it was for Journey Into Nyx. That was an interesting Challenge. The biggest reason was due to the potential to open up a God Pack. Unfortunately, no one at either event (Abingtong & Plainville) opened one (at least to my knowledge). In this round of the Challenge, there are no God Packs. Still, Magic 2015 has shown itself to be a really fun set.

Ornithopter – really?

From what I had read along the Twitterverse, Ornithopter was in a lot of main decks over the weekend at pre-release events. Just check out this dicussion thread started by Marhsall Sutcliff and replied by Owen Turtenwald:

https://twitter.com/OwenTweetenwald/status/488191104274034688

Who would have thought that this little guy would be such an all star? From being an easy sac target for Shrapnel Blast to being one of the many creatures to cast spells with Convoke, Ornithopter seemed to do it all. I mean, to think about it, I wouldn’t even want to bother killing it. I guess that’s why it’s such a threat.

However, based off of some of the reactions by the professional players, while it may have been a surprise that many people were playing it main board, they still thought it was not even worthy of coming in from the side board. This is definitely something to think about.

How do you feel about it? Would you play it for some cheap effects? Let me know. I’m quite curious to know.

17 lands or 18 lands?

I’ve always been accustomed to playing 17 lands in Limited. I think that playing 18 is something situational, and only if you’re playing into a heavy curve. In a recent article, Travis Woo discussed this very issue. According to Travis, he states that playing 17 land is more situational and something you do if you play ramp spells. By playing 18 lands, you help yourself by lowering the chances of getting mana boned, and you increase your chances of being able to play that high CC bomb you’re looking to drop on your opponent.

Why do I play 17 lands? I guess the question should be more like, “When should I play 17 lands?” For starters, if you have a small mana curve, then it would make total sense to play 17 lands. In a deck where your highest casting cost spell is four mana, the last thing you want to happen is to get land flooded. Just keep in mind, sometimes it’s better to play a little loose and safe rather than tight and dangerous.

More possible strategies

Some of these strats may be basic to some of you, but the Fat Pack Challenge tends to bring out new players. For them, this is the first time in a sealed event. So, here are some tips from the Zen Master of Sealed: me (Ken Briscoe can testify to this).

When making your deck, try to stick to one or two colors. As you get into three or four color territory, the potential to miss your colors goes up. What can be done to remedy this? One thing that can be done is mana fixing. Luckily in M15, we have the benefits of the Pain Lands making their return to Standard. While you only get two colors out of them, producing a 2-for-1 is still nice. Thanks to spells like Nissa’s Expedition and Verdant Haven, mana fixing becomes a little bit easier as well, so long as you’re playing Green.

Stick to 40 cards. Don’t go 41, 42, or 43. Now I’m sure you’re asking why. The main reason is to be able to draw the spells you want. There is a great article from Jeff Cunningham (circa 2006 via the Mothersite) that explains this well. Playing 40 cards allows for a more focused strategy. Typically when you play more than 40 cards, it can end up diluting your deck and your draws. When you draw a spell from your deck, you want that card to make an impact and not linger around. In some cases, by the time that particular card’s moment to shine comes, it may be too late for you.

Some final thoughts

The most important thing to remember at these events is to have fun. These strategies I proposed at just that – proposals. You don’t have to follow mine, or anyone else’s word. However, I do want you to win. So use the advice I have given you any way you see fit.

That’s it for this week. If you do attend the Fat Pack Challenge, let us know. We want to hear about your experiences in general and your experiences with playing the cards in the Limited format. Also, if you didn’t know, we have also started an Instagram and Tumblr page. If you take any photos from the event, then feel free to share them with us and other Magic: The Gathering fans out there. If you have your own accounts on these sites then don’t forget to tag us in the photos. If you don’t you can always send me any photos you’d like posted on the site to my email: Sims@battlegroundgames.com

‘Journey Into Nyx’ Fat Pack challenge results, afterthoughts, and more

Last weekend, Battleground Games & Hobbies hosted another Fat Pack challenge for “Journey Into Nyx.” This is always a fun event. In regards to a sealed event, this one is different because players get nine packs of “Journey Into Nyx.” At a regular Sealed event, players would have normally gotten  two “Theros” packs, two “Born of the Gods” packs, and two “Journey Into Nyx” packs.

In the end, Carl Godon defeated Josh Warren for the special “Journey Into Nyx” plaque that Battleground Games had made just for the event. Here’s a picture of it. Pretty sweet, huh?

carl fat pack challenge winner

How did I do? First, thanks for asking. Secondly, I did very poorly. I ended up with only one win and three losses for the night. It was six rounds that night, so I ended up dropping early to save me the trouble of going one and five.

Unfortunately, I took my decks apart, so I can’t tell you exactly what I played. Yes, you heard me. I said, “decks.” That’s plural for more than one. After initially suffering two losses in the first two rounds, I had decided to change it up. I won the third match I played once I changed my deck. It felt good, but then I lost the following match and was gutted once again. It’s alright though. I took away many things from this Fat Pack challenge that should have me ready for the next one.

To have fun or to crush your opponents?

I wasn’t very impressed with my pool when I first looked at it. I had given up before I had even played one game. This is probably the biggest reason why I did so poorly. Could I have done anything to better my chances? Yes. By looking at things much differently.

I had built a “fun” deck. I basically took the fattest creatures I had and did my best to quickly get them out. I thought this would be fun. I was wrong. You know what’s fun, though? Winning is fun! I guess I’ve been playing this game too long. I’m at the point where I don’t enjoy losing as much. It’s understandable though, I think. I did pay to enter a tournament. If you and I are playing casually though, and I lose, the chances of me flipping the table a really low.

I paid to play, I shouldn’t have gone in with that attitude. I’m the only one to blame. So, what’s the lesson here: There is a time and place to have fun; this isn’t one of them.

‘Sigiled Starfish’ is a really cool card

One of the cards I was really impressed with was “Sigiled Starfish.” This little guy is a blue common from “Journey Into Nyx.” He only cost one and a blue, and has a power and toughness of 0/3. At this point, he’s just a cheap wall. Why is he so special? The reason being is that he can scry for you every turn (as long as you tap him)! Being able to cast him on turn two stopped a lot of early aggro. By turn three, you were fixing the top of your deck and digging for whatever answer you may need at the time.

The Starfish was so impressive I even thought about playing it in Standard. Would it be possible? Maybe. If “Augur of Bolas” was played, so why not the Starfish?

‘King Macar, the Gold-Cursed’ is the worst card ever

To clarify, “King Macar” is the worst card to ever go against. I’m not the only one who thinks so. Here’s a Tweet from another Magic player and host of his own FNM stream on Twitch.tv.

He’s right. The King is a beast. At the Fat Pack challenge, I played Sundy who had to mulligan down to five cards. I applied as much pressure as I could and then he cast the King on turn four. I wasn’t playing any kind of removal and the king eventually removed all of my creatures. I couldn’t even play them fast enough for him to remove one and leave me with another.

If you can’t remove the King, then hope you can play something bigger than him to stop him from attacking or tapping.

Now a word about Extra-Life

If any of you follow my Facebook page or are friends with me on Facebook, then you should know that I’ve been advertising my Extra-Life fundraiser campaign. If you’re not part of any of the above, then you’re in luck. Here’s what’s going on.

For the month of May I have set a mini-goal of hitting $300 out of the total $1000 I have set for Extra-Life. If I hit this goal, I’m going to give away a copy of “Takenoko” to someone who donated in the month of May. If you play at Battleground Games & Hobbies then you can pick up the game there. Otherwise, I’ll gladly ship you the game.

takenoko box image

I have additional plans to give away more games, but I want to be able to hit this mini-goal first. Technically I shouldn’t say it, but I’m terrible at keeping secrets. If I break this goal I plan on setting another mini-goal. If I hit that other mini-goal, I’ll give away a copy of the “Rampage” board game. Also, I’m still talking to Logitech G about some logistical issues, but I might also be giving away a pair of Logitech G230 Stereo Gaming Headsets.

So, if you want to help me reach that goal then please click on the banner below and donate today.

That’s it for now. Tune in next time for gaming news, previews, and reviews. This weekend is the TCG 5K in Boxborough. Hopefully, I’ll be in attendance. If I make it, I plan on writing a full tournament report as well as my overall experience. It should be a great read especially if you’re wanting to attend your first major tournament.

I still don’t know what I should play, but if you have any suggestions, then let me know in the comment section.
