Cryptozoic to Release ‘The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug’ Board Game

Cryptozoic will release The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Board Game on December 20th, a week after the movie premieres in theaters on Friday, December 13th, according to hobby industry news website ICv2.com.

Similar to Cryptozoic’s first Hobbit movie board game, this game is designed by Reiner Knizia.  The game is a stand-alone, but can be combined with the Unexpected Journey game.  Players must work cooperatively as they travel to the gold-filled caverns of Erebor (the Lonely Mountain) in search of treasure and the courage to defeat Smaug.  The game is designed for 1 – 4 players, ages 15 and up, and plays in 30 – 45 minutes.

The box contains 2 game boards, a resource board, 4 cheat sheets, tiles, cards, custom dice, markers, a dragon pawn and a rulebook.

Cryptozoic also updated release dates for several of their other Middle Earth related titles.  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Deck-Building Game and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King Deck-Building Game are now Q1 2014 releases, and The Middle Earth Expandable Card Game: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Edition Starter Set and Expansions  will also release early next year.

Two New Rio Grande Games Announced for December

27298Power Grid Australia India_MD

Rio Grande Games has added two new games to its list of December releases: Power Grid: India/Australia and Last Will: Getting Sacked.

The Power Grid: India/Australia expansion in designed by Power Grid designer Friedemann Friese and features a two sided board (one for each country).  It follows the normal rules for the Power Grid base game except for a few rule changes based on the special conditions of the two countries.  As an expansion, the base game is required to play.  The game is for 2 – 6 players, ages 13 and up, and plays in about 90 minutes.  MSRP is $14.95.

Last Will: Getting Sacked is designed by Vladimir Suchy (Shipyard, League of Six, Last Will) and is an expansion for Last Will.  The lawyers have found a hidden clause in Uncle’s last will and testament, so spending all your money isn’t enough, you have to lose your job too!  Players compete to get fired by missing work, as well as reducing their income.  Since nothing makes people broke faster than a wedding, there is also the addition of six nuptial cards, so a new spouse can blow through player’s money.  The game is for 2 – 5 players, ages 13 and up, and plays in 45 – 90 minutes.   MSRP is $39.95.

Geek & Sundry’s TableTop: Takenoko

Check out the latest episode of Geek & Sundry’s smash YouTube web series TableTop, with host Wil Wheaton, featuring special guests Rosanna Pansino, Harley Morenstein, and Drew Roy. This week, they’re playing a sweet game designed by Antione Bauza and published by Asmodee Games.

About Takenoko

A long time ago at the Japanese Imperial court, the Chinese Emperor offered a giant panda bear as a symbol of peace to the Japanese Emperor. Since then, the Japanese Emperor has entrusted his court members (the players) with the difficult task of caring for the animal by tending to his bamboo garden.

In Takenoko, the players will cultivate land plots, irrigate them, and grow one of the three species of bamboo (Green, Yellow, and Pink) with the help of the Imperial gardener to maintain this bamboo garden. They will have to bear with the immoderate hunger of this sacred animal for the juicy and tender bamboo. The player who manages his land plots best, growing the most bamboo while feeding the delicate appetite of the panda, will win the game.

Takenoko is great for 2-4 players ages 8 and up! Plus, this game makes a fantastic holiday gift. Available now at your local Battleground Games & Hobbies.
