Z-Man to Reprint Popular ‘Vikings’ Board Game

According to ICv2.com, Z-Man Games has announced that it will be reprinting Michael Kiesling’s classic Vikings board game. The popular game, first published by Hans im Gluck in 2007 with an English edition from Rio Grande Games, is out-of-print in North America with good condition examples of the game going for big bucks on Ebay. Z-Man’s edition of the Vikings board game will ship to retail in the spring of 2014.
Designed for 2-4 players, ages 10 and up,Vikings is a fast-paced economic board game that takes six rounds (about 60 minutes) to play. Vikings is not about conquest and pillage, rather it a strategy game that rewards clever use of resources. The unique feature of the auction and tile placement game is its pricing wheel, which gives the game several delightful levels of complexity, which can be enhanced even more using the rules of the “advanced” game.

Wizards of the Coast Announces Update to Magic Banned & Restricted List

Yesterday, Wizards of the Coast announced major changes to the Modern-format Banned & Restricted List. Effective as of February 7th – this Friday – are the following changes:
Modern:
Deathrite Shaman BANNED
Bitterblossom UNBANNED
Wild Nacatl UNBANNED
Standard, Legacy, Vintage:
No Changes
The next Banned & Restricted List announcement will be April 28, 2014.
Wizards of the Coast provided the following explanation for the changes:
“Explanation of February 3, 2014, B&R Changes
Different flavors of black-green decks have recently been among the best-performing decks in Modern. These decks play many very efficient ways to trade cards one for one with their opponents, such as Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Abrupt Decay. Strong mana acceleration helps these decks trade one for one efficiently enough that they can keep up with the other decks in a large format such as Modern, but normally playing mana acceleration comes at the cost of playing cards that are less powerful in the late game. Deathrite Shaman, however, is powerful at all stages of the game. Having a strong attrition-based deck as a large portion of the metagame makes it difficult for decks that are based on synergies between cards instead of individually powerful cards. We believe that removing Deathrite Shaman from the format will leave more room for future innovation.
At the time Wild Nacatl was banned, we hoped that this would allow room for other aggressive decks to shine. Artifact-based aggressive strategies have remained popular and a few other aggressive decks have emerged, but the Zoo decks eventually disappeared as a result of the ban and nothing else emerged as a viable traditional aggressive deck. We expect that with the return of Wild Nacatl, those decks will return as a viable option.
At the time of Modern’s inception, the dominance of Faeries in Standard was at the front of our minds. Therefore, we took the conservative approach of including Bitterblossom in the initial banned list. After observing the evolution of the Modern format, we feel that it is of an appropriate power level to compete with the other powerful strategies in the format.”

Asmodee Announces new ‘Formula D’ Expansion

According to ICv2.com, Asmodee has announced the March release of Formula D Expansion 5, an expansion for the Formula D racing game that adds two new racing circuits. One of the circuits, which is set in the Olympic Village at Socchi was designed by Herman Tilke, the architect and designer of numerous modern Formula One race courses.
The other course include in Expansion 5 is a street racer’s dream as players scream along the Hudson River in New Jersey through parks, bluffs, and palisades on course that includes nineteen high speed turns. The Formula D games are designed for 2-10 players, ages 8 and up, and take about one-hour to play. The courses included in Expansion 5require that players have a copy of the basic Formula D game.
Formula D is Laurent Lavaur and Eric Randall’s 2008 re-launch of their own hit from 1991, Formula De. The game uses multiple-shaped polyhedral dice to represent the various gears of a Formula 1 racecar.

MTG Born of the Gods Pre-release Events – All Weekend Long!

The Born of the Gods Prerelease presents players with a special opportunity to open a Pre-release Pack and continue their journey down the Hero’s Path. There are five Pre-release Packs to choose from; each color has a Heroic Path: White – Lead, Blue – Outwit, Black – Dominate, Red – Conquer, and Green – Thrive.
If players would like to be guaranteed a specific Born of the Gods Pre-release Pack they MUST preregister for the event they would like to participate in. Please speak to a store associate to pre-register.

What Do I Get?
Prizes are based on attendance. There will be 2 booster packs per player put into the prize pool. Prizes packs are typically awarded to the top 35% of finishers.
Each Player will receive one Born of the Gods Prerelease Pack that contains:
2 Born of the Gods booster packs
3 Theros booster packs
1 seeded booster pack*
1 promo card
1 Master Your Destiny activity card
1 Spindown™ life counter
1 Hero’s Path welcome letter
1 Hero Card
For this event, players may use the promo card included with the Prerelease Pack in their tournament deck.
*Contains cards from Born of the Gods and Theros that are or have synergy with color you chose.
What Else Can I Do?
Open Dueling: Open Dueling players each receive 1 Born of the Gods Intro Pack. Open Dueling players use their Intro Pack to play against each other, as well as Prerelease tournament players who are between matches. All players should be encouraged to help teach Open Dueling participants how to play Magic.
Commander Melees:
Use your Commander decks with your friends!
Come down, play some cards, check out the new set, and meet some new people!
