Days of Wonder Announces ‘Five Tribes’ Board Game

Days of Wonder has announced, according to hobby news website ICv2.com, a September release for Five Tribes, a new Euro-style big box board game designed by Bruno Cathala (Senji, Dice Town).  Five Tribes builds on the long tradition of German games with wooden Meeples and provides a unique twist on the standard “worker placement” economic board game.  A bit more of a “gamer’s game” than the typical Days of Wonder fare, Five Tribes has clear, easy-to-understand rules, but requires a clever and calculated strategy to win.

In this “worker displacement” game players score points by carefully maneuvering the Five Tribes of Meeples over the tiles that make up the ancient Sultanate of Naqula.  They need to look ahead to what moves will not only position them to score, but also put their opponents at a disadvantage.  It’s when, how, and where players “dis-place” the five tribes of Assassins, Elders, Builders, Merchants, and Viziers that determines victory or defeat.

Designer Bruno Cathala, who Days of Wonder is bringing to GenCon to demo the game, explained his affection for the game: “After designing a series of smaller games, my inner-self began to insist that I work on something bigger and more substantial.  While I’ve already played the prototype hundreds of times, it’s still the game I want to play most often.  So please don’t hesitate to come to play with me at festivals–I never grow tired of Five Tribes.”

Z-Man Games Announces ‘Camel Up’ Board Game

Z-Man Games has announced it will be publishing the English edition of popular European board game Camel Up! sometime in 2014, according to popular hobby industry website ICv2.com.

Designed by Steffen Bogen,Camel Up  pits two to eight players against each other in trying to determine the show placement of five racing camels.  As the dromedaries and Bactrian camels race around the pyramid, players bet on either specific legs of the race, or final placement; the earlier the bet is recorded, the more money can be won.  The camels’ progress is determined by dice that come out of the pyramid dice shaker, released one at a time.

The box contains a pyramid, a game board, 5 camels, 5 dice, 40 race betting cards, 8 desert tiles, 15 leg betting tiles, 5 pyramid tiles, 50 Egyptian pound coins, 20 Egyptian pound cards, 1 leg starting player marker.

Unfortunately, a release date is not yet announced. Nevertheless, as soon as this popular game is available, Battleground Games & Hobbies – your board game headquarters – will have it in stock!

New Kickstarter Board Game ‘Dogs of War’ Coming in Q4

At ACD Games Day – an annual event held by ACD Distribution, owned by Hall of Fame Magic the Gathering player Bob Maher Jr., CoolMiniOrNot shared details about the planned release of Dogs of War, a new European-style board game they will release in the fourth quarter, according to retailer news website ICv2.com.

Designed by Paolo Mori (Libertalia, Augustus), Dogs of War is a game of intrigue and backstabbing, set in a steampunk Renaissance universe.  Players take the role of captains of private armies, deployed in favor of rival noble houses.  Players use their Dog of War to help them win influence, battles and if needed, betray the house they’ve sworn allegiance to.  The goal is not pure military power, but rather to amass power by getting rewards from houses, amassing gold and troops, and gaining influence with the most successful houses.

The box will contain 30 plastic busts of the 5 Dogs of War and their player screens, 50 soldier cards (4 types), 32 tactical cards, 72 house influence tokens (for 6 houses), 36 coins, 60 victory point tokens,  and a configurable tile-based game board.  The game is for 3 -5 players.

The game was funded on Kickstarter at the beginning of May, and raised $66,703 from 1,139 backers ($58.56/backer).

If this board game sounds sweet, let us know when you stop by your local Battleground Games & Hobbies! Special order available.
